I think my sister in law is going to die of alcoholism.

I got a call early this morning and found out that my sister in law is in the hospital... again. I have known her for 20 years and all throughout that time she has been either drinking or on drugs. It has really taken its tole on her... She has serosis of the liver. Her spleen isn't working. She has ulcers. She has stomach and intestinal problems, shes lost a lot of weight, has kidney problems, blackouts, nausea, shaking, delirium tremens. Every symptom connected to alcoholism she has. We went to the hopital this morning and it doesn't look good. They are trying to keep her stabilized but both me and her mother think that she will never recover from this... She is breathing very hard and fast. They have a tube down her throat to keep her airway open. She is bleeding internally in several areas. They had to do a CT scan of her brain while we were there because they suspect she is bleeding there as well.

Alcoholism is a serious thing. I don't think people really realize what happens to both the addicted and the people who love them. Seeing her mother crying this morning just broke my heart.. and also seeing her daughter laying there in the state she is in about kills me. This is tearing me up inside. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

Adding... We just heard from the doctor... they do not expect her to make it. She is in a coma and her liver has about shut down and her lungs are shutting down as well. The doctor said if any relatives need to be called to come, they should be called now. Only a miracle is going to make her pull through.

Cheri, I am so very sorry that you and your family are going through this. I'm a recovering alcoholic - it is a horrible, horrible progressive disease. But you don't need me telling you that - you're having to watch the very worst of it. I'm thinking of you and your family

She has hung on so far but the doctors say there needs to be some decisions made now... they think she had a stroke and also that her heart rate is such that she may have a heart attack as well and they said decisions need to be made now on what measures to take should that happen.

As I started this post my neice just called me and told me they put a tube in her nose and are going to start feeding her tomorrow... she also said she was talking to her mom and she lifted her arm... she told her to do it again and she actually did it again so they think she can hear what is going on around her.... but when asked to open her eyes she is unable to do that. They don't want to give false hope though because she is still so critical. That is all I know for now.

You guys are so sweet!! I am so happy I have you all! Thank you so much for the thoughts and prayers and all the great hugs!

I have good news also... Lisa, by the grace of God, woke up this morning. By afternoon they took the tube out of her mouth, but left the one in her nose for now.... she started talking.. at first it was a little off but as the day progressed she started feeling better. She asked the doctor when she could eat something and he told her not today, that she can have some liquids but that is it for now... then he got right up to her and informed her that several doctors and other people were working on her and that she is extremely lucky cuz she should be dead by now. They haven't said what affect this had on her body but I think the more time goes by that maybe they will be able to say what permanent damage was done... They changed her status from critical to stable... She is a very lucky woman and I hope that maybe this has scared her straight... the doctor told her that next time she will probably die.

Thanks again for your support.. you people are awesome and I am a lucky woman to have you as my friends.
