Jewish support
I wonder if there are any other Jewish people here.
During Pesach, when food plays such an important role, how do you all cope? I'm planning on going on the meat & egg fast--since I pretty much don't eat bread, during Passover it's not a problem (except for matzah at the seder). does anyone know if flaxmeal could be considered kosher for Passover? Thanks. |

I don't know the answer to you question.
But I love the Jewish holidays mucho. I find it very interesting since there's some heritage that goes way back. (I'm mixed in race & religion that its not even funny - hence the reason I am a free spirit when it comes to religion). I'm sure if you were to go to www.jewish.com you could ask the rabbi. They might know and have an entire database on questions like that. good luck. |

I am also Jewish. But, I am not among the most observant or othodox. That being said, I have managed to get thru all of our holidays for the last 5 years without too much difficulty. I look at it this way....I think doing low carb is like doing Passover all year. I found low carb macaroons which seemed to have satisfied any cravings I have had, and other than that I have pretty much been ok.
I dont have an answer to the flaxmeal question, but perhaps if you called a local temple you might get an answer. Most of the kosher stores around here are closed until after the holiday is over. |

Sorry I also don't know about whether flaxseed is kosher for Passover.
I'd suggest the standard "consult an orthodox rabbi" ditto on my Passover week is pretty much the same as year round, eggs, chicken, veggies. What's hard for me is I really love all the Pesach stuff, matzo balls, matzo brei, kugels etc but since I also have type II diabetes I just avoid it and make my guests eat too much so there aren't that many leftovers. For the Seder, I do have wine and matzo but that's just for the seder. I'm tossing the rest of my matzo -- too tempting. |

Yeah, matzo is just so delicious with butter...or in matzo brei.
I haven't had any since the seders ![]() I'm not that religious, so it seems to me that since flaxseed is a seed and not grain, it would be okay. I suspect an orthodox rabbi would want it to be processed in a kosher for pesach facility in order for it to be truly kosher for pesach. That wouldn't bother me so much, ultimately. Great to share this with you all! |

At my Synagogue...
This issue came up last year at my synagogue and basically, our rabbi put flax seeds in the category of foods that are kitniyot. These are foods that are not true chometz (e.g. wheat flour, etc.) but because their products can be difficult to distinguish from foods that are chometz, there is an Ashkenazi tradition of avoiding them during passover as well.
Other foods that fall into the category are things like peas, lentils, poppy and sesame seeds, etc. The idea is basically that if you were to compare whole wheat flour with ground flax seeds, it could be hard to tell them apart. Thus to avoid the risk, kitniyot foods are also prohibited. There is also the principle at work that in order to truly mark the event, one should not simply switch out normal foods for comparable substitutions. In other words, you could eat them and be ok in regards to the letter of the Torah, but especially among European Jews there is a long standing tradition that would encourage avoiding them. HTH! |

re not wheat matzo
you can purchase kosher for passover spelt matza that's what I had this year. It was ok but very pricey you can also purchase kosher for passover oat matza the only source I have for that was UK and I think it was shmurah and very very pricey. |
