Hi friends,

My mom says her pain level is 2 - and that is without any meds this morning.
The ER doc sort of teased us with letting her manage things more at home if we could, since we know why she's having the pancreatitis.

Only thing is - anything by mouth irritates the pancreas until it is calm, so we couldn't think of her going home until she can tolerate at least liquids.

My mom is hoping they might let her go this evening and if so, she would sure be happier. Although she is a cheery person anyway.

Thanks for prayers and good wishes - all so appreciated.

I can't wait for AT&T to get in our area. My sister has it and son have it and love it. We have Cox Cable and the prices just keep going up. I'm jumping ship at first opportunity.

Sandy, I'm up 4 pounds from my lowest low. But I got to that lowest low by having a horrible kidney stone.... I seem to be at this weight effortlessly, but I DO wish I were exercising more. I think I'll be able to concentrate more on that after my mom gets the intervention she needs and I am satisfied she's OK enough to shoo me away.

I am glad you mentioned weighing. Every time you do, I weigh myself. I am one who can go for years without weighing - I don't want to know - and that is the wrong way to think if I want to keep a tighter rein on my happy weight loss. Thanks.

Morning!

Judy - yay for mom!! I hope she continues to get better and better!!

Sandy - Good job on nipping it in the bud!! You're so right - I HAVE to weigh every day to stay on top of it!
That being said I'm on day 2 of 115.8 and am hoping it doesn't go any lower.Though i need to go for a walk!

Sometimes they block games in a local area because they want you to buy a ticket and go to the game and not be able to watch it at home. I guess money talks!

Carolyn - have a salad!!

Debbie - yes, it's hard when kids live far away! How dare they move away from us??!!

Buffy, Whole Foods was the only place I saw full fat Fage. I use the 2% a lot.

Judy, whipples aren't real common so 20 per year may not be bad stats. You may consider a big university hospital but it may not any better results.

Hi!
Judy hope your mom's issues are healed soon. She sounds like such a sweetheart! (like you)!
Good for you Sandy! You are so blessed to have such a metabolism! I now have a "thyroid" metabolism... takes longer to take of the lbs. then it used to.
Hope you all have a wonderful week-end! Our day of travel went well yesterday. Half a day today...

I am lucky to have a good metabolism and I'm very thankful. I too have thyroid problems but take Armour thyroid to help it. I have had thyroid issues for years!

MK, this isn't about blackout games for that purpose. It's b/c of a deal TWC and Comcast made directly with the KU athletic dept. I totally understand the blackouts, although KU games are typically sold out anyway. If there were any tickets, they would be snatched up!!

Hi..

We have gone to bars to watch KSU games from time to time..Now we can get most games..which is wonderful and more comfortable at home.

Judy: You can't have mom at home with no fluids going in, can you? I am hoping that this surgery will "cure her" so she can be pain free after she recovers.

Had a salad..Got some peach ice cream for Scarlett's mom/brother..Serena speaks no English..and has been here for 11 years. Scarlett speaks great English and translates for her mom at the doctor's office.

Think purple and red and blue..I wonder how KU will do tonight..

I guess they won't send her home today but have already allowed her liquids. she chose beef broth, coffee, sugar free jello and feels just fine.

No pain meds since last night pain is 1 or 2 out of ten. She can have soft foods if she tolerates the liquid. It's been about 2 hours so I think it's definitely going the right direction. She is perky and not in pain/drugged today.

Arrrgghh, started a post and lost it, hate that.

Judy, so sorry to hear about your dear mom and her being back in hospital. She is so fortunate to have you and SS there to help, love, and care for her. Keep us up to date.

Sandy, I buy small okra, figure it is the tenderest, wash, dry, cut in bite size pieces and then toss with light olive oil, salt and pepper. Bake 250 for about 1/2 hour or more until tender and just starting to crisp. I really like okra though.

You gals have all been very busy, with exercising, work, travel, doing good things for others, I feel kind of lacking here. I haven't accomplished much this week. I have another DAMN UTI, sorry but I am so tired of these. Getting the sugar out of my diet once again will help but in the meantime, I guess I never got clear over the last one. Such a problem for diabetics. So, not feeling the best but could be a lot worse.

I don't think I will have a loss this week on the LGLC diet (loosey goosey low carb). I feel I have been a little too loosey and a lot less goosey this week. So, more poultry and less loosey foods! OTOH, no gain either so that is good. Have not wanted to cook and wanted more comfort type foods. Saw a recipe on FB this morning for chicken and dumplings and about passed clear out , oh, just kidding but I wouldn't have wanted to meet up with that dish in real life or I may have caved.

Ready for our hot weather to go away and I know it will soon. My flowers and plants that are still alive just look worn out from trying to make it through this heat.

Looking forward to spending a week with my next older sis in October in Phoenix. We tried to get our oldest sister to join us but she really has a hard time justifying going on a trip without her husband, notice I didn't use DH. She is so much more open and our sister without him around and we treasure time with her that way, but it is very little and far between.

Need to call Grant (13) and see how high school and high school band are going for him.

I think it is so sad when people come here and don't learn English. I have been told that my great-grandmother who immigrated from Sweden never learned to speak English. What I didn't know until the other day was that she was only in her 30's. And, I can't think there were that many swedes in the town they lived in for her to communicate with. Hopefully your little gal's mother will let her daughter teach her.

Carolyn, I've called several bars around here and only found 2 that can show it!! Neither one is one we've gone to much, but that might change. This is major. If I were the bar owners I'd really be mad. Next week it'll be on CBS so we can watch it at home. Thank goodness!

Hi gals..

That is bad, Sandy...Wait until basketball season..Peeps will be picketing in the streets.

Oh, Buffy..I hadn't heard of you having a UTI for a while..Sorry..;( No fun.
I agree on the English..My gal didn't know English until she went to kindergarten. I told her that she needs to teach her brother (1) English when he starts to talk..

Hi everyone..KSU won! KU won! MU won, didn' they? IL won..Happy day for most everyone.

Yes MU (Mizzou) won! DD x2 and SIL sent me a photo of them at game....love it! So glad youngest DD alma mater (KSU) also won! Now that we are not in big 12 we cheer for everyone we formerly played against....SIL fav team is Longhorns (UT)....their score doesn't look so good right now. But, primarily cheer for KSU in the Big 12.

Conference was great....wish I could have heard it all. More powerpoints will be available online for just the next 2 wks now that conference is finished.

Cindy/Judy - I concur that 20 whipple procedures sounds like a lot. I would feel good with that. And it sounds like he is very straight forward with you with expectations of recovery. VERY important that she uses her incentive spirometer all throughout the day post op, to prevent complications of pneumonia due to pain with taking a deep breath. I am glad she is already expressing her pain on 1-10 scale! How about popsicles? That would keep her hydrated....if the sugar is a problem get sugarfree. Can put in a cup and microwave about 15 seconds so it is slushy-like and can be eaten with a spoon.

Didn't get to any garage sales....Left conference after 1pm and had to eat (Chinese Buffet), after that I am sure any sales that had been going this AM were already packed up and put away due to the heat! Flint Hills are a nice view to see while driving.....Listened to the Mizzou game until half time, then lost radio station in the Hills!

Daily weighing is something I like to do...but sometimes as losing I just mistakenly feel great the amount lost so far and maintained, rather than continuing to loose.....This time I have all kinds of motivation. Will be back on plan tomorrow.

Our next door neighbor unbelievably just had the Whipple procedure about 2 or 3 months ago - unexpectedly found liver cancer and a later pet scan shows no cancer since.
She has had radiation and chemo anyway and is tolerating everything perfectly well. They are so grateful for the way things have turned out for our nice neighbor. Their surgery was done by the liver specialist in the same group recommended to my mother.
Neighbor's husband is an attorney and has suggested we try to go outside my mother's medicare HMO, and as much as I want THE BEST for my 85-year-old cute, smart mother, I have a gut feeling this local surgeon will do as good a job as the next very-experienced-in-this-procedure surgeon.

I am also not inclined to blame someone for a poor outcome depending... (if he was drunk or stoned or whatever - you know). I think the people working for my mom's health honestly have the best intentions and do their best and sometimes people don't do well and sometimes people die. That is the way things go.

Thank you both for your opinion. The lawyer next door kindly (and I mean that in real terms - he's being kind and looking out for us) suggested we employ his friend for a small amount of time to see other options to possibly go to the tippity-top surgeon in Okla. City who does this procedure all the darn time.

We see value in this surgeon here in our own city, in his stated outcomes of surgery, and value in being able to stay in our own city.

I hope we're not wrong, but if we are, we'll have to know we made choices and each choice has a consequence.

(listening to any smart disagreements....)

Hi..

Judy, I would do the same thing..Just get it done in your city..By the time the nice lawyer's friend tackles the HMO with all the paperwork necessary, it might take a while.
Also, it really depends on the patient, too..If your mom is in good shape, then that is the best place to start this..Praying for the right decision..

Debbie: Glad you had a nice trip home and yes, the radio isn't very good on the way out of KCity. and beyond..When we go 400 to Wichita, you can barely get a phone signal.

Well, retirement can be expensive. Dh broke my vacuum by vacuuming something up and the belt broke cuz he smelled smoke..He said he could fix it. Then he tried to fix
my washing machine to help the water come in more than a drizzle and the faucet on the cold water now leaks..So....I can't wash or vacuum..LOL. Will call the plumber tomorrow.

Morning! Lazy day - so it may be afternoon already!

Judy - you have to do what you feel is right! If you have confidence in your doc that's all that matters.

When my DH had cancer everyone told us to go to Mayo or Cleveland Clinic.
Not only would that have been extremely hard since I still had a son in HS would we have had better care?

After looking up our local doc and seeing his credentials:

Head & Neck Surgery Fellowhip
Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio, 1981

Otolaryngology Residency
Washington University School of Medicine,
Barnes Hospital, St. Louis, 1980

Surgery Residency
Jewish Hospital of St. Louis, St. Louis, MO 1978

Surgery Residency
Jewish Hospital of St. Louis, St. Louis, MO 1978

Education
M.D., State University New York,
Syracuse, 1976

I decided he was in good hands! And then discovered he'd been asked my Mayo to head their cancer center in FL. So sometimes you have to trust what you have!

Carolyn's on vacation - no vacuum - no laundry!
Sounds awesome!!

Thanks you all - I think we are in good hands.
Spoke with another doctor friend today who knows the potential surgeon, and he said he would send his wife to this surgeon with all confidence. And like our nurse friends who chimed in, he said 20 of those surgeries a year is quite a few, so I think our minds are made up.

Now I wish they'd possibly waive that stress test and get on with it.
I worry for wishing things that big, though...

to all of you.

Hi ladies..

Yes, I am a lady of leisure. Really don't want to go to the laundromat and we all have clothes for a while. Hopefully Paul (plumber/neighbor) can rescue me today. On the vacuum, I think I will get another. I'm not going to research everything until the cows come home like dh would like me to, I'll just go to Wallie and see what they have. And, if the old one gets fixed, I'll keep it downstairs.. It's a win/win..

We have lots of tomatoes thanks to a kind neighbor..

Bible study in the morning..Starting Revelation..It should be good.. Check in later..

Have a great day everyone..

Judy: Let's pray that they will get on with it and get the stress test done quickly if they need it..
