Where is everybody today?

I walked early, then met with a trainer to go over options, then went to get the oil changed, picked up some farm eggs and now I'm taking a little rest I need to go to Costco, but haven't made it yet.

I'm going to make your okra tonight Buffy!! With bacon wrapped sirloin steaks. And salad.

Buffy, did you say you just spray it with Pam and dust with parmesan cheese? And bake? Sliced okra, right?

Hi girls,

We went for that walk with the neighbor & her dog today. Its a beautiful sunny day. Molly & Coog had a blast. And the two of us were huffing & puffing our way up those hills.

We're leaving tomorrow morning to see DD. Should be fun.

I should get busy & pack.

Have a good evening!

My mom:
Here is what happened today.
We met with a doc in Tulsa today.
My mom's medicare HMO believes their in-network surgeon is qualified to work with my mom. I might now agree, as we have met with this guy today.

All my reading told me we wanted to go to a surgeon who does this “Whipple Procedure” all the time.

A person would WANT to go to a group who does this every day, not once a month.

So the surgeon we saw today said he does this procedure about 20 times/year.

He is aware that a high volume clinic has the best outcomes of this surgery.

He says his outcomes are commensurate with high-volume clinic outcomes.

I don’t know how to verify his claim, and I fear asking him further may compromise his treatment of my mother.

My sister and I think this guy will do the surgery, also consult with an oncologist known to us. My brother-in-law’s sister had breast cancer several years ago, pre-menopause. Her oncologist will be my mom’s oncologist and is loved by my sister's sister-in-law for many reasons.

Tomorrow my mother will go through a stress test and EKG to see whether her heart could withstand the surgery to remove the little cancer.

The doc was really nice today and said just looking at her and seeing her history – he thought she was very fit and fine - as if she could shoot a buffalo while riding a mule! (Carolyn - he's from Kiowa, KS as are many of my mother's peeps!)

This surgery he calls “the mother of all surgeries.” It’s a lot of removal and resectioning and blah blibiddy blah blah I don’t know what. Recovery will take 2 months at a minimum for a 50-yr-old.

A lot of people have this surgery when they are stage 4. They live about 4 weeks after surgery wishing they were dead, then they die.

My mother is supposedly stage 1. They’ll remove all the surrounding lymph nodes, her gall bladder, a big portion of her pancreas, the duodenum or a portion of it, and other things I don’t know.

The doc today was not dragging his feet. He's going to see if my mom is fit for surgery, will consult with an oncologist, then probably proceed with surgery unless the oncologist thinks my mom will first benefit from some chemo.

The guy was actually pretty encouraging regarding the size of the lesion and her physical state.

That is what my daughter did! She left Mizzou with NBC tape and was a weekend news anchor/weekday reporter at her first job. Three months later she was lead eve anchor! Did that in two different states and now in radio. It IS an excellent program. Unfortunately, several of her friends who focused on print journalism had a harder time when in about 2008-2010 newspapers and some magazines suffered. DD thankfully also has web experience.

Hi!

I was busy exercising and meeting my brother-in-law for lunch.
Then a TWAW meeting tonight.

I even managed to eat today - and a good thing, I was down to 115.8 this morning.

Judy - I'm glad you're getting lots of information! Are you feeling good about the doc?

Deb - My daughter has a Master's in Journalism from Syracuse U - she's the Publication Coordinator for the Aspen Music Festival in Aspen, CO.
She's much rather be working in magazines, though and did her internship at Dance Magazine in NYC.
I'm hoping that even though most publications are going online, they'll still need stories and writers and that she can get back to what she really wants to do!

Debby - have a fun trip!!

I did finally eat more normally today - so hopefully my weight will stabilize - I was 115.8 this morning!

Still dealing with some of the medical problems so not sure where this fall will take me but in answer to your question, have any of us done ketosis, YES! It works.

This girl can talk
This cracked me up, Buffy!! I know what you mean about getting started back on carbs....and now they make you puff up like a fish! I had lost over 7.5 lbs just since Aug 31, Saturday....was in ketosis. (So I admit, Sat AM Aug 31st I was 191.1). Last night on the way home from work (at nearly 11pm!) starving and got oatmeal from McD's. Did pretty good today until stayed out too late on errands and after a conservative fast food dinner had to go to Sams and went straight to the concession and ordered a sundae with fruit. Now my belly feels huge! After conference Sat I have to get back on plan. What is NK?

MK - That is AWESOME! My daughter just started taking her first class towards her Masters this week. Her degree will be in Media Studies, in case she wants to teach in the future. She totally wanted to go to Syracuse U for her undergraduate degree...but we wouldn't (couldn't) even considerate it...plus, that is a LONG way away from family! We don't have anyone close east of St Louis that could have been at all "nearby!"

BTW - You are disappearing!

Well, I tried to make carrot chips like the Amish do..I baked..nope, I fried, nope..Not crispy..at all..I guess I will just have to order them or maybe one of the cooks can give some advice.

Ds is coming for steak tonight. I will roast some brussels sprouts..He loves those and I got 2 "good" steaks from WalMart..

I was 144 this morning..Yesterday I had a big lunch after church and only nibbled for dinner..
Thanks Carolyn....I know I can do it again! I was at 190 in 2010 and in 9 1/2 months got down to 137. I just gotta stick with it!! And live the maintenance track instead of going back to former eating!

BTW - I have a blue eyed Himalyan also!

It's the same thing, essentially as our group Eat Fat Get Thin.
The thought is that too much protein will also lead to weight gain through gluconeogenesis.

We eat low carb, high fat (very satiating) and moderate protein.

In NK we might measure our ketones by blood as urine measurements are not so accurate, we now find.

While in actual ketosis, we are rarely hungry.

Hardly any of us in this group eat this way!

We like each other and still discuss low carb recipes and exercise and anything else that strikes our fancy!

Sandy - I am so sorry to hear about your friend's daughter. So very sad. Praying for all of you, I imagine you are quite busy with all of this. I am quite busy right now and sorry I haven't been online til now! Will be done with my conference at 12:30pm Saturday. At this point I am going to assume a get-together cannot work out. I might be able to check the computer tomorrow after working with students before heading up to KC.

Hi everyone..

Judy, thanks for keeping us informed about your sweet mom. Now is the time to have the surgery, if she is fit enough (which I am sure she is). However, that is a lot of stuff that they remove/move around, etc. I can see where it would take 2 months for recovery at least. Most hysterectomies take a full 30 days for recovering, and that is not such a huge surgery. There are always pain pills for the pain, too.. Will keep mom in our prayers.

Yeah, Debbie for your weight loss..Hope you can meet Sandy, but enjoy your conference. Maybe things will calm down. I love your cat.. Alex is an orange point Siamese. I got him off of insulin this spring.. The girls here were so supportive.

Have a great trip, Debby.. Glad Molly has a doggie friend.

Sandy: I do have the phone number for refills on the "chips" if you are interested I will email it to you..You and your dh might have to take a trip to Branson..

My dd's big fundraiser at UMKC is honoring Enterpreneur of the Year and Costco is the one the business school chose this year. She will be busy, busy until the big event..

I can't see MK..Remember when that was your goal when we first started this "journey"?? You is there, girl..

Well, I am making the Banana Split Cake again for our group tonight. One of my favorite desserts of all times..

I don't usually have any twinges of jealousy.
But I am jealous that we don't have Costco here.

I want to go through some recipes and quit wanting to try every new thing and go back to some of the fantastic ones - keep them separate so I know what is good good good. That Banana Split Cake is definitely an eye-popping crowd-pleaser!

Carolyn was a real-life kitty hero getting Alex off insulin. She sacrificed much sleep for dear Alex! So nice to have success in that way.

I was last year given some "flash-fried" green beans. The entire bean was crispy, crunchy, delicious.... it had no nutritional info but I thought I tasted a sweet taste. I found them in another store and they definitely had sugar in them. Don't know if these are the same as the chips you are talking about.

I bought another eggplant to make chips Sharon's way. The last two I bought went bad due to my inattention - I hate wasting food!
Do I peel the eggplant? Or leave it alone and just slice thinly?
Debby you liked the chips too, I think?

I'm sorry to report we didn't really like the okra. I think it was actually more b/c of it being bad, tough okra rather than the recipe. I still haven't tried the eggplant chips but I'm interested in hearing how yours come out Judy.
That's encouraging news on your mom. I'm sure it will be a long road of recovery for her but with you and your SS I'm sure she'll do fine. There aren't really any other alternatives at this point are there?

Carolyn, yes, I'd love to have the refill info. Do they come in a tin and then you buy refills? What are the ingredients listed? Very interesting. We don't much care for Branson anymore so if I can't find them online or closer I guess we'll just do without.

I walked 3 miles this morning and then did weights for 45 minutes. I'm pooped!! But feel great. Very weird.

I am not going to be able to meet Deb as I don't want to make plans and have to break them and my friend is having her family start arriving this weekend and I might be called upon to help with food, etc. Maybe next time. I sure hope so. The funeral is Monday.

Judy when I do them I slice them about 1/4" thick after peeling them but leaving some of the skin still on. Stripe version. Does that make sense? The skin is too tough when you keep it all on. What you are going to get when they are done is a look like they have been dehydrated. I love them with guacamole.

Thank you Sharon! Stripes make perfect sense.

unfortunately we are back in the hospital with pancreatitis. Obviously cancelled the stress test. She is pretty comfortable right now though - sleeping.

DD did her undergrad close to home - and we don't have any family in NY either, but it was such a great program I didn't want her to miss out! We visited her as much as possible and luckily I found a friend of hers from kindergarten's parents had moved there (I knew they had left but not that they'd moved to Syracuse!) and so I felt more comfortable having "grownups" that I knew near!

We don't know anyone in Aspen, have some friends in Denver - but that's 3 hours away over huge mountains - but they have to grow up sometime, right?!

Drove up here, as planned, to be here eve before conference (missed today of conference due to being with my students, going to the 1/2 day of conference tomorrow). Had hoped to meet up with journalist DD and her DH visiting from TX with other DD, but today they found out they could meet up with a former MU classmate for dinner and our "fluid" plans got pushed back and then didn't happen. So, instead, I have been looking at powerpoints online I missed from conference today. Just as well....this topic is important to me! (Using simulation to help educate healthcare professionals, especially in interprofessional teams.) Going to take my time going home tomorrow afternoon...may even stop at a garage sale or two or whatever...just have ME time!! (Cuz family here are headed to Mizzou for football game while I am in conference.)

Such is life with a full-time job!

Very thankful that DH and I had just spent 3 days in TX visiting oldest DD and SIL in July, see youngest DD at least every 8 wks, and we had taken them all with us in December when DH and I celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary/Christmas in Cancun! I wish they lived closer......I have warned that when grandkids come we may move in! (not!) But we may move nearer!!

Judy - Thankful that your Mom is comfortable. Pancreatitis can be SO painful! Praying for you both!

Also praying for Sandy and her friend....and thanking the Lord that her friend has such a selfless friend in Sandy.

Hi ladies.

Busy day for you, Debbie. Sorry you didn't get to meet up with your kiddos..But it was nice you saw them in Mexico..Those times are precious when they don't live near you.

Hoping Judy's mom is better today..She needs some relief from this...soon.

Taking my little reading partner, Scarlett, to Braum's today. I am having a salad..Keep repeating that..LOL.

Gosh, I hope KSU wins today..and Sandy, that is so bad that local peeps can't watch KU play...GRUMMMBLE..I think many people will be switching to Time Warner, etc..

Switching to TWC is not really that easy just because you get mad at Surewest. We just renewed our contract with them and are obligated for a year! Of course, they didn't mention the fact that KU games were no longer going to be available to watch. Some of the games will be on network TV so we'll see those but still.... And the games that will be on ESPN3 will be seen all over the country EXCEPT in Kansas and the KC viewing area!! I am beyond livid!!! I really wish as many people as possible would let the athletic director at KU know that they don't like this arrangement and maybe it will get changed. Spread the word!!!

Judy, I hope your mom is more comfortable today. Poor thing!

Not to pat myself on the back but just to show the importance of not waiting. After our week in California and then Irish Fest my weight had really jumped up. My window is between 140-145 and my weight last week had risen to 150.6!!! Let me tell you, that was scary! This week I really tightened up the reins on my eating and didn't slip up once and this morning I'm back into my window at 144.4. Barely in my window but at least in it. I know my body (finally) and if I'd just blown it off another week or two I know it would've stuck and I would've had to work really hard and long to drop that "play time" weight. I really think it helps if you nip it in the bud as quickly as you can after the gain to minimize the damage. I know some of it was water, as usual, but I know some of it was just weight gain too. I hadn't seen 150 in a very long, long time and that shocked me into immediate action. Another plus, IMHO, for weighing every day. It keeps me accountable daily.
