Hi gang..

First to address Lise on the protein/carb thing..I know that Dr. Atkins has written this in his books..and I found where Barry says it..: Page 229..Dietary proteins are converted to glucose at about 58 percent efficiency, so approximately 100 grams of protein can produce 58 grams of glucose via gluconeogenesis.

That is also why Dr. Bernstein (diabetes expert) wants diabetics to limit their protein to 3-4 ounces at a meal. He has written if you can't lose on 4 ounces, bring it back to 3 ounces...

And, Dr. Atkins has also said that 100 grams of fat will produce only 10 grams of glucose. Of course, we know that 100 grams of carbs will produce 100 grams of glucose.

I was 155..getting back to my pre-Lawrence weight..Yippee..One more day of VBS..double yippee..

Bad leg cramps

I just noticed somebody posting about this on Induction. I have had bad leg cramps over the last three days. I don't know if it is diet related, or to do with other factors.

It was actually quite funny ..we were in a serious meeting about some redundancies on Wednesday (our whole department is being outsourced and most of our jobs will go - another story!!) and I was suddenly in rather a lot of pain and couldn't help but show it and everything had to stop while my legs de-cramped. You know ' ow, OW !' etc with these union reps looking at me..transformed from cool maker of speeches to woman saying 'ow!' a lot.

I'm going to look into nutrients.

Kathryn ..hope everyone's well. Las night, ps, a wash out ..., three potato chips (don't know what that comes to) two slices of french bread, foie gras from Paris -that should be ok - taponard (not a clue) and two large glasses of wine at a do/meeting I was invited to mid evening when I'd had my main course already. It was great fun and cheered me up that said.

Morning all!

Kapri - I used to get muscle cramps all the time when I had chronic fatigue syndrome and the doctor used to tell me that Magnesium eases it. I have to admit I found that worked well.

Lise - I think I will tell that fib about being gluton intolerant. If they can't cater for that I think I'll just go without until the evening and then find a good burger joint and do the old bunless thing.

Fabat,

Thank you. I'll look into magnesium supplementation. I'll also make sure it gets properly represented in my diet.

And potassium is good for leg cramps too. We lose a lot of potassium eating low carb at first especially as we pee like crazy, lol.

DS16 is home!!!

He didn't get in until 12:30 am, so I'm going to be dragging today ~ because it was after 1:00am before I got to sleep!

He had a great time and I'll have pics as soon as I get his film developed. Hopefully I can get a disc with it.

He brought me a really great gift of Michael the Archangel slaying satan -

Kathryn - I vote for potassium too! Or even lack of Vitamin D can cause cramps.

Carolyn thank you so much for finding the reference for me...I looked it up right away...I think that if you read the paragraph before the snippet that you posted you will see that the part you bolded is a bit out of context.

"Our bodies need a constant supply of protein to sustain a healthy structure. This requires a fairly minimal amount of protein: about 1 to 1.5 g per kg of lean body weight per day is all that is necessary to preserve muscle mass. Any protein over and above this amount can be used as a source of glucose."

I take this to mean that protein over and above that which we need is converted to glucose via gluconeogenesis. Having said that I have to admit that I am not satisfied with the evidence that gluconeogenesis actually occurs. I will search my cached webpages to find the studies and post when I find them. Take me for example. Today I will be consuming 162g of protein and 152 g of fat. If the excess protein is converted to glucose, even at a rate of 58% then I would have alot of glucose swimming around in my blood yet my blood sugar readings are always between 4.8 and 5.2 (86.4 and 93.6) no matter when I test and believe me I've tested at all kinds of ranges from immediately before a meal to 10 mins after, 30 mins after, 1 hr or 2 hrs and also before bed.

It really is a mystery. I'm just loving all this research and learning new things about my body and this WOE.

Thanks again Carolyn for pointing me towards the quote. I don't have the Atkins book so I can't read what he wrote.

For Kapri, here is my Fitday for today, it may be a little off because my steak has a bone and I probably should have deducted the weight of it from the total weight of the steak and also I used the ground beef info from the fitday site instead of off the label but I'm not to worried about it and it will give you a good idea. Please note that I am aware that my numbers do not fit in with the EFGT percentages because I am ultra sensitive to carbs. Eating this way has helped me to cut cravings, reduce hunger and lose weight:

potassium is the cramp mineral. i prefer to take a pot/mag mix but usually potassium alone will correct the problem. start w the smallest dose (doesn't take much) then increase as needed.
we low carber don't retain excess fluid so k is lost in all that pee. many peop say they adjusted after a while and did not need supplementation but i am not one of those peop.
no biggie since these minerals are cheap.

Magnesium, poteassium, vitamin d ..thank you ladies!!

Lise, thank you for those figures - I am reading one Dr Diana Schwarzbein's books and it is explaining to me about the fact that calories are one thing in theory and another thing all together when they are burnt up by the body. The way different sorts of calories from fats, proteins and carbs are dealt with by the body another thing another.

What she's saying is re-inforcing what we were discussing. She isn't advocating quite the same approach as Barry G but the theory in her book makes sense of your approach working at a fat burning level despite the high cals. Hmmm very interesting.

May I ask you a few questions on your high meat emphasis. Are you confident of getting all the nutrients you need? Do you supplement your diet?
I haven't read up on that side of things except for the research into inuit diets.

Kathryn

Kathryn I don't supplement at all...if your body is not absorbing enough of a certain vitamin or mineral then it is important to find out why it is not being absorbed...supplementing will not help if your body is not absorbing and I have come to accept that if my body won't absorb from the food I eat why would it absorb something synthetic formulated in a lab....I am 100% confident that I am getting all that my body needs from the meat and fat that I eat....the inuit of old ( ie before aculteration) did not have any of the diseases of civilization...they were healthy and strong...I have no fears on that front

Hi..

Lise: I'm betting that if you ate totally lean protein and no fat, you would have alot more
glucose swimming around, don't you think? The fact that you combine protein with fat really makes for a slow release of protein/glucose. Honestly, it's not that much glucose, but it is some. Say your body can only process 28 grams of protein per meal..and you eat 58 grams at one meal. So, the 38 grams that are extra, which can be turned into glucose and stored if you don't use it right away. But it would be a slow release because of the fat in the protein..However, no fat, higher glucose levels. I'm assuming you are not a diabetic, right?

MKay: Glad ds is home..I'm sure his pictures are beautiful............such beautiful blue water. There is a cute movie coming out about Greece with the big fat Greek wedding gal..Looks really cute.

VBS is over..I just walked 3 miles with my friend..Time for a nap..

Thanks Lise for getting back to me on all my questions. I'm interested too in your views on supplementation in relation to absorption. More for me to reflect on. I'll look into that.

Hi everybody, I'm loving this interesting conversation concerning our food and minerals. I get leg cramps sometimes but not all the time. I tend to take potassium sometimes but not all the time, lol.

I did my walk/run again today. I do about 30-35 minutes 3x a week. I can't believe how much I'm enjoying it!! And my knee has NOT hurt one time!! And my weight is slowly creeping down. I don't know if that's why, but I'll take it for any reason. Carolyn, I wish you lived closer. We could be walk/run buddies!

I went to the pool and caught up with my pool buddies today. It was nice and relaxing. I'll probably go at least a couple times a week just to stay in the pool loop, lol.

We're going to see The Elders tonight. An Irish singing group we really like. They're in a free concert this weekend and again next weekend. But next week isn't free.

Have a great evening!!

Potassium + magnesium :two web snippets re sources

Food sources of potassium and magnesium

Natural sources of potassium include avocados, bananas, citrus fruits, lentils, milk, molasses, nuts, parsnips, potatoes, raisins, canned sardines, fresh spinach, yogurt, and wholegrain cereals.

Natural sources of magnesium include nuts, legumes, wholegrain cereals and breads, soybeans, and seafoods. Magnesium is important in photosynthesis, so vegetables high in chlorophyll (such as dark green vegetables) are good sources.

Dietary sources of potassium include apple juice, apricots, avocado, bananas, legumes, beets, cantaloupe, carrots, oranges, pears, white and sweet potatoes, raisins, salmon, sardines, watermelon, and winter squash. Amounts of 4-6 grams per day are recommended. Magnesium is highest in whole grains and leafy greens, but also occurs in many fruits and vegetables. The recommended intake ranges from 300-500 mg. Dr. Kaplan reports a "major controversy" surrounding the usefulness of calcium in lowering blood pressure. However, he did indicate that up to 30 percent of people with high blood pressure also excrete calcium in their urine and that in those cases additional calcium might be useful. Writing for the Journal of Hypertension, Lawrence Resnick, M.D. reported the effectiveness of calcium, two grams per day, in lowering blood pressure in people who are salt sensitive. The authors of a 1985 study appearing in JAMA report finding that African-American men have lower calcium levels partly as a result of lactase deficiency, indicating another use for calcium supplementation. Calcium is found in yogurt and other milk products, soybeans, sardines, salmon, peanuts, sunflower seeds, and leafy greens.

I just made the best stuff with my mac nut oil! Someone at work said they blend softened butter and EVOO together and keep it in the fridge and it spreads easily. I softened a stick of salted organic butter and blended it with 1/2 cup of my mac nut oil! OMG! Nice and toasty-nutty flavor. It is perfect. I have gone thru a whole bottle already. I cup making mayo, some in my BF's carrot cake and now this. This is my fav oil!!

Out for Mexican tonite. I will have the shrimp soup as it is just broth and shrimp. Work tomorrow. DHOR 27 (Gord, that's my 27 year old horse) is doing well. On her second of 28 days of treatment.

Yup, Sandy...Next time I visit Beth, we can do the "walk thing" with our coffees in our hands..and of course, invite Cindy along..

I just plugged in my new Mother's Day gift..the Wii EA sports thing. I burned 92 calories of cream.. they needed to be burned..

I want a swimming pool..for myself..Our land is rather hilly....So, I will have dh scout out a flat section. Or I might get a small one for the deck.. just for me.

I miss my backyard but I sure don't miss the maintenance!! If I get the urge to vacuum and dip I can always go to DGS's house. I hated the opening and closing the most. But I sure enjoyed it while I had it. I taught all my grandkids except one to swim in that pool. Plus a couple of friends grandkids. I tried to teach the friend but she was unteachable, lol.

Change of plans, DS called so we're going out to eat with him and family and will maybe catch our Irish group next week. We haven't seen DS and family for a couple of weeks so we need to touch base and catch up.

MK, I thought that looks really cute! I like the female lead (I forget her name!)

Yes, Carolyn, when you are in town, we can do the walk thing. Lawerance was fun. In reference to your comment above, (I should know this) but the max protein at any one sitting is 28 grams? So 3 meals a day is 84 grams a day before protein starts converting to glucose? I could go get the book but I'm too lazy to go downstairs and get it.

Sandy, I have been getting my organic, Omega 3 enhanced eggs at Costco. It would be nice to get "real" farm eggs but these are so easy!

Going organic is EXPENSIVE!! I bought organic white 100% whole wheat today and it was about $10.50. That man had better like his carrot cake!!

Cindy: I have heard that peeps can eat a certain amount of protein at each meal, then if it's too much at that meal, it will be stored. Gwen Shamblin of the Weigh-Down workshop talked about this. So, for some peeps, it is better to eat smaller meals that several huge meals..YMMV..of course. I found some articles on this and they were all dealing with bodybuilders. People with more muscle need more protein than people who don't have much. I guess, we are to find out how much we need daily and divide by the number of meals..

I knew that movie looked good, Mary Kay...Glad it was.

Well, we surveyed the yard and I bought an 8 x 18" kiddie pool for myself. Then I bought a blowup lounge chair to place inside. Gosh, I hope the water doesn't go over the sides. We have a high deck and I wanted to put it up there, but water is heavy..and it would be quite heavy for the deck..So, I'll be on the ground, hoping no animals find it...
