Good day. Hair appt. went well, went by our little casino and won $500, whee, then on home where DD#3 and DGS 1 came by to see the kittens. He LOVED the kittens.

Only eaten 1 meal today, not sure what dinner will be. My endo is fine with me eating just 2 meals a day, I know some would have a fit about that.

I know I have to post pics. I need to down load them first. Buffy, your have something in common with DHOR27! You both had upper endoscopies!

Tried Braggs apple cider vinager for about 5 days. It is a mild diuretic but I didn't notice any appitite suppression.

Kapri, I am a little hungry on 1500 calories but it's not a big deal. 1200 calories would be a big deal!

Have a good evening all!

Cindy,

I think I can manage 1500 too. I just need to watch a few details.

All

I have woken up early with a theory going through my head. (No doubt you've all discussed this anyway do forgive me for rabbiting on ..):

that 1) alongside personal metabolic differences,if you do EFGT with the upper (acceptable to Barry) level of carbs + high fat you do need to watch the calorie levels too.

If , on the other hand, you are eating a high proportion of fatty meat based meals, as Lise described, with longer gaps between meals - responding to hunger levels - I don't know how high your average carb levels are Lise .. I'd be interested - I wonder whether the unlimited amounts of meat/eggs etc come into play then (as Barry describes) because the body is more efficient as a fuel burning mechanism in that one fuel burning mode rather than the mixed mode (fats, proteins and higher carbs). Secondly, with fats and proteins being appetite regulators , again as Barry argues the body sets its own limits.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is that I wonder whether the 'don't count calories' high fat diet probably works best with minimal carbs. Probably closer to Atkins levels.

I have personally tried that approach and couldn't sustain it ..there are theories about why some people can't do it. I enjoyed it enormously and do prefer not to have to hassle of calorie counting but my body didn't respond well.

So going down the high fat, medium protein with a top end quantity of carbs (50-60)works better for me (personally)even though it means extra vigilance on the calorie front. I suspect he himself is more of a high calorie, high fat, high protein and very low carb guy ..but I'm sure someone will correct me.

Thanks for being so welcoming here , btw, and I hope you don't mind my pontificating.

x Kathryn

With all this calorie talk I thought I'd do some research.

Here's the simplest one I found:

You expend energy no matter what you're doing, even when sleeping. Thus your Basal Metabolic Rate is the number of calories you'd burn if you stayed in bed all day - a tempting idea for some. If you've noticed that every year, it becomes harder to eat whatever you want and stay slim, you've also learned that your Basal Metabolic Rate decreases as you age. Likewise, depriving yourself of food in hopes of losing weight also decreases your BMR, a foil to your intentions. However, a regular routine of cardiovascular exercise can increase your BMR, improving your health and fitness when your body's ability to burn energy gradually slows down.

Calculator
Gender
Female

height
5' 0"

weight 125
(pounds)

age
50

BMR
1238.6

So according to the "experts" I could probably eat 1200 to maybe 1400 depending on the amount of exercise I get that day.

Since I want to lose 5 lbs, I'm either going to have to eat a lot less, or exercise a lot more!

Hi Mary Kay,

Thank you!

Do you have a link to that calculator? I'd find it helpful too.

Morning Peeps.
Not much to report here but busy, busy day getting ready to leave for Canada tomorrow. Flight leaves at 5:52 AM, arrggghhh, stupid me to make that early of a flight, LOL. But, to get in time to see Niagara Falls before driving on into Canada, we needed to do that.
I probably won't be on again until I return. KUTGW my friends, and be well!

I am typing with DC 14 curled up on my lap as it is a little chilly this morning. Carolyn, thank you for your feedback on my "frankenfood addiction". I am hooked on Maple Grove Farms pancake and waffle mix. I make a huge belgium waffle every morning and was feeling guilty. Most who have posted on my thread thought it was mild in the frankenfood sense.

Going to ride DHOR 9 today, work 20 hours tomorrow, 24 hours Saturday, 20 hours Monday, 20 hours Thursday, then taking DHOR 9 with my friends horses on a 4 day ride in Collins Missouri. I'll be worn out. Thinking about what to pack for food away from home. We bring lunch and dinner (I'm bringing my portable gas grill) and go to a little diner for breakfast. I'll take pics and have my friend help me post them.

Kathryn what you have written makes a lot of sense...I know that when I was eating a higher amount of carbs with the fatty protein I stalled and even started to gain weight...as I reduced my carbs to just the small amount that is found in eggs and some meat I started to lose weight again even though I eat a large number of cals. I am definately using fat as fuel.

As an experiment I will attempt to weigh my food before I eat to get a better idea of how many cals I am consuming.

I agree with you that I think Barry and Monica eat a lot fewer carbs than the official EFGT percentages recommends. This is the reason that I find it so important to read the whole book including his anecdotal stories of his life. This is the reason that I find that even though I am eating virtually zero carbs I am still following the Groves philosophy.

I am so pleased that you are continuing to explore this great way of eating and making it fit with your body.

Well, I opened my first bottle of macadamia nut oil and oh, my, does it smell nice. Roasted, nutty! I made homemade mayo with it and I am very pleased. I upped the Dijonnaise that I use in mine to lightly cover some of the nuttiness of the oil but it was fine. I will love to bake with it. I bet it would be nice as an alternative to EVOO in pesto since you use pine nuts although I have seen walnuts used. However, for work, I made a big pan of Ghiradelli dark chocolate brownies with homemade peanut butter frosting on top. No, I did not use my mac nut oil! That's for home use at $10 for 16oz.

Lise,

Thank you for this feedback ..very interesting r..and for the encouragement. My drive for thinking all this through is simply to get myself on the right track and to understand the way the diet functions to ensure that it isn't a mystery when it does and doesn't work.

Looking forward to learning more with you all,

Kathryn

Hi ladies..

My friend June left this morning forever.. Then I had VBS...

I didn't weigh myself but will do tomorrow in hopes of getting back to my pre-Lawrence weight.

MaryK: I totally agree with the basal metabolism disappearing as we age. We all know how much more we could eat when we were younger..

Cindy: My goodness..You are so adventuresome. Hoping for some nice trail days weatherwise for you.

Buff: Have fun in Canada..

Kapri: Carbs are the 1st key and protein is the 2nd key to Barry's plan. Since 1/2 of the protein turns into glucose, if you up your protein, your carbs should be lowered..

Lise: Your post was great..Barry and Monica probably didn't overdo the carbs. And, Barry always says, "if you must eat grains...bread..make sure it has butter on it..etc."

Mac oil is wonderfully nutty..

Hot dog night at VBS tonight. I will eat one without the bun..

I'm having hot dogs tonight too!! I finally found the ones I was looking for. Now I just hope they're good. And I bought some fresh strawberries so those will be my carb treat for the day. I have a fasting blood test in the morning. And then I need to drop by a friend's house. Her dad died 2 days ago. I have 3 friends who've lost their dads in the last month!! All from cancer. I hate cancer!! Another friend just started her chemo last Friday for breast cancer. She's only 44 and has a 13 year old daughter. And her husband is less than supportive. Grrrr.

Buffy, enjoy your time in Canada. Take a nap on the plane and you'll be fine.

Kapri,
Keep up the good work! It's good that you want to know exactly what's going on with your body as you lose your weight.

Lise, I've been eating steaks the last few days and always think of you while I'm eating it, lol. I love steak!!!

MK, when does DS get home? I bet you miss him like crazy.

Cindy, I bet that oil would be great for pesto. Good idea!! It sounds like you have some fun stuff planned. After that nasty word called work, that it, lol.

Have a great evening everybody!

Kathryn - This one is the calculator.

Buffy - have a lot of fun!!!!!

Sandy - I do miss him like crazy! I've only received one email since he's been gone.
What hot dogs are you eating?

Carolyn - I'm glad you got to spend so much time with June before she left. And in this world of electronics, she's never very far away!

Cindy - the oil sounds yummy!

Yes, Sandy, what hot dogs are you eating? And i saw you made the black bean brownies! Aren't those fun! And simple. I made mine in a blender. Lauren has a cake version with icing that looks to die!! I need to experiment with cannelloni beans and see if I can make a vanilla sour cream version. Oh, that sounds good! Do you all see my problem!! I should be on meat and water and stop creating this stuff!

We had buffalo T-bones tonite. A bit tough although the filet portion was nice. I also bought buffalo KC strips and buffalo , oh, shoot, what is the fatty cut? I can't remember but we are trying them to see if we can find a cut we like as they are grass fed and organic.

Work again tomorrow. Pumpkin's (oop's, DHOR 27) medicine arrives tomorrow. Once daily for 28 days. Hope she recovers some use of her face, poor baby.

The hot dogs are Bar S brand, Jumbo Jumbos, 1/4 pound dogs. I had a bit of trouble finding them but I finally did at Price Chopper in OP. I got the all beef kind and they're 2g carbs each. I forget the rest of the stats but they sure taste good even though I know they prolly aren't that good for me. And I get blood drawn tomorrow, lolo.

I love fatty beef so I don't know if I'd like buffalo. Or even grass fed beef. When we used to buy beef from my FIL he always finished them in the feed lot of GRAIN!! I know, I know, but they sure were good!

I like the brownies better today than yesterday. I saw that cake recipe!! Oh My!! That's actually what got me going on the brownies, lol. And surprisingly I haven't eaten the whole batch yet. DH thinks he doesn't like them. Oh well, more for me, lol.

Cancer is a scarey thing..Sorry about your friend's dad, Sandy.

Cindy, we will all be anxious to see if Pumpkin recovers..Praying and hoping the medicine works.

I ate 3 bunless hotdogs tonight. I'm sure they were the cheapo ones, chock full of salt..LOL..I'll be like a balloon in the a.m...

Yup, June will be able to email when her son hitches up her puter.

Oh Carolyn, I didn't even think of the high salt in my hot dogs! I'll probably blow up like a jumbo jumbo in the a.m. too, lol. I just hope they can still find my vein easily, lol. I've been drinking water like crazy so hopefully that'll puff those veins right up nice and juicy, lol.

Carolyn,

Ah..
I hadn't appreciated that protein transforms itself. Hmmm.

I'll be monitering again - getting the carbs and protein bang on. I managed 38-40g carbs yesterday (included another small glass of wine) - that was low for me but I wasn't too hungry

I am looking forward to the results of Lise's measuring the way her approachw works.

I think based on what you both said, on the days when I have maxed on carbs (60g) the only choice is to keep the calories down and go for a run (!!). I suspect as everybody is saying that you can't have your cake and eat it !!! Ha!

Mary Kay ..thank you I'll take a break to calculate later today,

have a good day all!

I'm signing in for June a few days late (been away on business). I've not lost anything the past couple of weeks so reporting 252 at start of June.

I know it's the business trips which are stalling me; for instance we had an all-day meeting with lunch brought in and it was all sandwiches...not even the sort you could pick the filling out of easily (grated cheese/mayo, tuna/mayo, egg/mayo) and fruit/pastries.

I'm away again for 2 days next week, 2 days the week after and 3 days the last week of June so I'm going to have to try and think of some strategies to employ when colleagues eat in places where there's little low carb choice.

It's really bloody frustrating!

Morning!!

Fabat - yep that can be frustrating. They probably didn't have any forks anyway!
Can you order something special when the order goes in?
Or just be sure to be perfect for the rest of your meals.

Sandy and Carolyn - I wondered if salty hot dogs was this guy's problem too!

I want some coffee!!!!!! I hate not having my coffee first thing when my feet hit the floor. I hope I can drive to the Dr. Lol.

Interesting.

By lunchtime today my calories were around 920 and for various reasons the percantages were as follows:

Fat (67%) Carbs (17%)
Protein (17%) Alcohol (0%)

So the protein was way out of balance. I was starving and edgy even though I felt like I'd eaten loads. I had one scoop of whey protein powder as a cold drink and immediately fel ok , back in balance with the stats restored somewhat:

Fat (61%) Carbs (18%)
Protein (21%) Alcohol (0%)

I now feel fine. The protein scoop wouldn't normally be that filling (at least that's my experience - 100 cals 0.5 fat 8.0 carbs 16.0 protein) but it tipped me back into balance.

Pontificating poster !!

Carolyn can you please direct me to a link that proves this thesis...I don't believe this for a minute.

I know that when carbs are present there is some gluconeogenesis (conversion of protein to glucose) but surely not 1/2

Fabat if you don't want to go into the details of why you can't eat bread or any of the other food that they are serving just tell them that you have a medical condition and ask the organizer or the manager of the people hosing the function for something without gluten....maybe a salad with cheese or cold cuts.....the place making the sandwiches should be able to do that....or a few hard boiled eggs before they make them into egg salad....I find that people look at me like a pain in the neck when I say I am low carb but they bend over backwards if I have a medical condition....it's not even a lie because being overweight is a medical condition and eating carbs will make us fatter....

Have a great EFGT day...busy at work
