Hello from a fat convert!

Hi all =)

I hope y'all don't mind me wriggling in here

A potted history - I've been fat since I was fired out of the womb, despite eating what doctors call a 'healthy diet' (my Mum is a life-long vegetarian and I got fed her diet of carbs and veggies).

In the early 90s I was up to around 240lbs and discovered Atkins. Lost a lot of weight but for some reason fell off the wagon due to constant sniping from people who were convinced I'd drop dead of a heart attack. In the early 00s I tried a low-carb/fat, high protein diet and lost..but again gave up, this time because I got for the first time in my life (and hopefully the last!), gout.

Xmas this year was a bit of a turning point, I was facing my 40th in 2009 and was my heaviest weight (280lbs) so I went on a diet spree, opting for Body for Life and massive amounts of high intensity exercise. Anyway I got lost 20lbs up to April but felt like crud; always hungry, always exhausted and always in pain. Determined NOT to give up I thought I'd try low-carb one more time and lost 8lbs in the first week...then stalled the 2nd week and put weight on in the third, despite being uber strict about carbs. Awful thoughts of 'missed golden shot' were going through my head and I started reading... a lot. I realised pretty quickly that my protein levels every day were equal to, or exceeding fat levels.

What I've read in the last few weeks has really opened my eyes to the importance of a diet that's high in fats, moderate in protein and low in carbs and I'm now trying to tinker my daily intake like mad to get the fats up, up, up!

I now have EFGT in my reading pile along with Kendricks' 'Great Cholesterol Con' and Taubes' 'Diet Delusion' and I'm determined to do what it takes to find out how to lose the excess weight and eat healthily and well for the rest of my life!

Look forward to learning from you all and getting to know you

Many thanks Carolyn!

I started upping the fats and lowering the protein portions on Wednesday and have lost 2lbs as of this morning. I'm using Food Focus to track and seem to be averaging between 1800-2000 calories a day without trying any type of calorie restriction. I've got a pair of those all singing, all dancing Tanita scales which report that my BMR is 1845.

I'm going to read the rest of EFGT this weekend and look at some of the menu plans posted here. Today's menu looked like this:

Breakfast: 3 rashers of streaky bacon and 2 eggs cooked in coconut oil
Lunch: 200g mushrooms fried in coconut oil with some Dijon mustard and cream
Dinner: 138g pork shoulder steak fried in coconut oil on a big green salad with 3 tablespoons of home-made blue cheese dressing.
Total:
1648 calories
139g fat
86g protein
13g carb

Does that look about right? I'm not sure if I'm still too high on proteins when working on the theory of 1g * 1kg of lean body weight which, for me, would be 54g protein

Fab: That looks fine..The protein can be a bit higher when you first start out, because some of the weight is muscle..not just fat.

If you can lose on 1800 calories, then go for it..As you lose, you might have to "adjust" those calories because your body will be smaller..

54g protein is the minimum, so Barry doesn't want peeps to go under that. But, probably
around 80 is okay for a while until it doesn't "work" anymore.

Fab...you should have had some protein with your lunch. The proportions that Barry suggests are per meal. Not per day. You must have protein or your insulin will spike and hunger and cravings will hit you hard

Welcome to EFGT
