Welcome, welcome new girls! So happy to have you! I am officially not the newby! I have only been doing this 3 months and that first month was a struggle just deciding what to eat. I think the first day, I ate bacon, eggs, a cup of walnuts and cheese cause I didn't know what else to do. Now I know a bunch of things to do!!.

Carla, to tell you the truth, I don't think you can make any size of potato fit this formula. I get kicked off the bandwagon with mail-ordered LC bread! There is another thread on EFGT that is called "No Fooling Around Food and Excersize Tracking" and we post what we are eating that day. It's great to get an idea of what others are eating to help you come up with choices.

Yes, the ratios have to work out for the day but also, loosely for each meal also. I am sticking around 20-25 net carbs per day so you see how a potato can easily leave you no room the rest of the day. I was trying to keep my protein down between 65-75 but find I do better around 90. Everyone varies. I can have 1 slice LC bread but more than that stalls me. The cleaner you eat, the better. I don't crave sugar at all and I was a carboholic!

All this info is helping lots. I have been doing low carb for awhile now and know that if I have too many I don't feel so good

I am not a huge fan of potatoes so that doesn't bother me.

I tried this Ezekiel bread awhile back when I was trying another plan and have some in freezer, maybe when I get more into the program I will have a slice once in awhile and see how it goes.

I want to eat clean. I am not feeling the greatest lately with feeling bloated and such most of the time and always thirsty. So I think eating healthier and good for my body balance will be good.

Thanks for all the advice. I look forward to this adventure that will become lifestyle.

Hi kids..

Made a trip to Lowe's..as we exchanged 2 bathroom fans, but I don't think the ones we bought will fit..too small for the hole up there..Grumble. But, when my electrician comes tomorrow, I can have him put the new light up and give me ceiling fan advice..

Hey, Zilla..I was wondered/worried about you and our grandduckies..Sorry about the blizzards.. Sending you a Kansas hug.

Smoky..staying the same is a good thing, I think.

Better get to bed..exercise in the morning..

Night all..

Good Morning Everyone - day 2 --

I hate tracking but I know that is the key. I was browsing around the net and found other than ****** there was my-calorie-counter and it seems to have a larger database and I get the percentages there too. I think I am going to try that one and see in the long run if I like it better than ******. I did see igoogle and you can put calorie tracker on there but there is nothing that does all nutrients. Otherwise it would have been handy as my homepage.

I better get busy here at work.. they don't seem to pay me to play on the net

Morning everyone and welcome to our newcomers!
Gord, good job for staying the same, not sure many of us can even say that. Maybe we will all do better now that it is almost spring weather, that seems to help.
I got a good nights sleep last night so maybe today I will feel better, between not sleeping well Tues. night and the funeral yesterday I was wiped out last night. Glad that is all behind us and hope the family can now rest and start to heal.
I still have not made it to the grocery store, yikes, I was planning on doing that Monday. Have a meeting to tonight and office work today.

Carla, I have heard about a tracking program called the daily plate, you might google that one too. I use a program called Lifeform which I have found very easy to use, there is a small one time charge for it though but it is super easy.

Good Morning All! Up at 3:30 am for a c-section. Back to sleep at 5:30 for maybe another hour so maybe a total of 5 hours last night. That's gonna hurt later!

Having taxes done today. Oh, boy. Enough said.

Carla, let us know how you like the calorie counter. I have only used ****** so I would be interested to see. For me, I have to do electronic tracking. I think things will look fine and enter it in ******, then have to change things around so it will fit. Tracking is your biggest ally. Especially if you are 20 carbs or less. Man, it adds up quick. Pour over the recipe threads. I am never without Oopsies because they are a nice, very LC, low protein, high fat bun substitute that helps balance out a meal. Anyway, don't feel like your asking too many questions. We were all there once. I'm still there!!

Carolyn, I ordered more Now Almond flour. $4.69 for 10oz I think so when it arrives, I'll try the pound cake. Probably more consistent results than with me grinding it. That would be good with a little Walden Farms strawberry jam melted over the top and topped with a little whipped cream!

Hi ladies and our Gord..

The electricians are here putting up the fans/light..I will paint the other bathroom this afternoon. I have so much lotion, etc..beauty supplies in my bathrooms, I will definitely
have to pitch alot of it..Anyone else collect beauty supplies??????????

Cindy: Can you sleep at work? I had visions of you walking the halls, delivering babies, and doing all sorts of things for 20 hours straight..

Carla: Hey, that was great in finding a new place to "keep track"..Honestly, it really helps to get an "idea" of what's going in your body.

Buffy: That poor family...I'm hoping that the husband had some life insurance to help
raise those kiddos..It's a really sad thing..

I made turnip tater salad last night and it was my favorite faux tater salad..

I know I have to track electronically (via internet) really puts things into perspective. I will let you know how I like that one. Right now it seems to have a larger database of items. Plus and minus to every program.

When you have 20 carbs or less is that carb or net carbs???

I will have to search what these oopsies are? I like whoosie pies but now maybe they would be too much protein

Continuing to learn ....

Yupppers, Sandy...I cut my turnips into big chunks, then boil them in water with some cream added (to absorb the bite). Then cool them off and pat them dry..peel the skin, and chop them up. The texture is just like a tater.. DH didn't even know and he hates turnips..

Carla, i keep it close to 20 net carbs. Usually it's 22 or 24.

Carolyn, Lord have mercy, girl, I thought I was the only one who collected beauty supplies!! I've got so much sunscreen and self tanner, moisturizer, hair spray, makeup, ect. it's ridiculous. Costco doesn't help!

No, I do get to sleep when we aren't doing anything but get woke up at night a lot.

I'm going to have to try the turnip potato salad. I thought the cauliflower was good but i like turnips. Making a pumpkin protein shake, my new favorite thing.

Taxes done. Refund!! Yeah!! They said it would be directly deposited on April 17th. Wow, that's fast.

Good morning..

This is a no paint day..Might paint tonight. My painting clothes are very icky..Need to wash them separately. Although the paint is pretty dried on..I am a messy painter.

Yes, I will plow through all the wrinkle creams, etc. and start pitching this weekend. LOL..

I need to move my scale downstairs cuz I haven't weighed since April 1st and renovation day. Good excuse, but I feel a little in the "dark". KWIM?

Gary is heading to Arkansas in the "private jet" that the company part-owns with a Wichita firm. They are dropping him off in AR and then dropping his boss off in Louisiana.
Boy, Gary says that those private jets really spoil ya. Drive 10 minutes from home, get on, take off. He doesn't take it very often, but he likes it. Prayers for safety..

Off to exercise, then Dianne and I are going to Bartlesville to return the bathroom fans we bought the other night. Good excuse to have lunch, fun, and shopping, right?

Good Morning all -

I don't think I did too bad yesterday.. i know I won't ever be perfect but the more I get to know about the plan the better I will be at it. The only part of tracking I don't like but do is that I make a lot of things that are just throw this in and that and oh this would maybe work in there. I am not much of a recipe follower..love new recipes though. The older I get the more I LOVE to cook and try new things. Just moved into a new house last summer and I love my kitchen to work in.

Carolyn - it is always fun to find an excuse to go out with friends. Have lots of fun. Renovating is messy and can be frustrating at times but in the end SO SO nice.

I have TONS of old makeup and creams and gadgets too. Must be a woman thing..

Better get my food logged in..

TTFN - have a great day everyone

Have a fun day Carolyn. I wish I could meet you for lunch too. But B-ville is a bit far, lol.

I'm off to the gym this a.m. Wow, that's 2 whole weeks back in my routine!

Eating is going well but my BD weight is wanting to stick around, grrrr. It's my own fault but it doesn't mean I have to like it, lol.

Carla, weren't you guys renovating an old farm house when you first moved? Did you build the new house on that land? I bet it's beautiful.

Morning everyone.

I love going through someone elses beauty supplies, samples, leftovers, etc. LOL. At Christmas time, one of the things the girls like to do either on Christmas eve or Christmas day, is each of my daughters, DIL, myself, bring any samples, or product that is good but we aren't using, we toss them all in the middle of the table and then everyone just takes the things that they think they would like or could use, it is fun but that doesn't solve things as far as clearing out your cupboards, you just end up with other "stuff" to put in there.

Yesterday, DH and I went to the container store and I got shoe cubbies to put on the floor of my closet, I have wayyy too many pairs of shoes and they just get piled up on the floor, I have outgrown my shoe racks that are in there. I even got rid of some last year but the flipflops have little baby flipflops in there, I swear. There was a 25% off coupon on Ophra.com that I had printed out, but alas, I forgot it. So, the clerk was nice enough to tell me where a library was close by, and suggest I go there, get on the internet and print off a new one, which saved me over $30. I can't wait to get my shoes neatly organized and maybe if I separate those frisky flipflops they won't multiply

Last night our Lady Elks group went out to dinner, I was good and had fish and brought dessert home for DH.

Tonight DD#2 and DGS, DD #3 and SIL, DSD, her DH and triplets are all coming over for fun and dinner so I finally must, must, must get to the grocery store so I can feed them. Sweep the floor and clean the patio tables in case they want to sit outside.

Have a great day everyone.

Here is my first question of the day What do you eat to get your fat intake up?? Having a bit of a problem with that.

Sandy - Yes we were going to renovate the old house - it will be 100 years old 2011. But the contractor said it would not be worth it unless we had endless money which we don't. So last year we ended up putting on the same property a modular home. I really like it and it was a lot less headache than building from stick. The old house we use now as my husbands office (he teleworks when he is not on the road) and for guests. We joke that we have my house and his house..lol

Sandy I was looking at your stats and you have done a great job, have you lost it all on this plan??

I guess now that I am looking all of you had lost quite a bit and CONGRATULATIONS on that, did you lose it all on this plan?

Carla....I make sure to buy fatty meats and I don't cut any fat off..for instance last night I bought a rack of beef ribs and cut them apart and roasted them in the oven...there were 7 ribs and I had 2 for supper....they have alot of fat and moderate meat...fat makes meat so tasty....I just put them in a roasting pan at 375 for an hour covered with foil and then took the foil off and let them brown up for 15 mins........I also put butter on top of my scrambled eggs and if I have veggies I slather them in butter too....I find if I have fatty meats I naturally eat less protein...

Lise - thanks for the info - When I fried up some ground pork last night I didn't drain the fat

Here is question 2 for the day - In the ratios on what you can eat per day there is a range for carbs.. however some I have read say to keep them under 20 net? I am confused on that. If you keep within the ratios of the program do you not lose then?

Carls, I'm finding it's almost both. Total carbs count and net carbs count. I seem to do better when my total carbs are max 10%. For 1600 caories, that's 40 max for the day. Of that 40, I try to at least 20 grams fiber for a net of 20. There is a lot of juggleing. I planned what I was going to eat today yesterday on ******, moving stuff around until it works. I have had my total carbs up to 70 with almost 50 grams fiber (!) so the net was still about 20 but that ketone stick didn't show a thing for the day. Ketosis is NOT the goal but when I follow the diet correctly, I'm in mild ketosis. When that mild ketosis stops, it's always because my total carbs are way too much even if my net is 20. Does that make sense? The bottom line is to follow what the diet says and keep total carbs max 10%.

As for fat, I have struggled with that too. There are threads where people ask the same thing and others gave feedback. Here are my hints, everyone else chime in:
1T coconut oil and 1T butter on a slice of LC toast
Frying eggs but only eating the yolk
Full fat salad dressing
Deviled eggs with a lot of mayo
1/4 cream in my protin shakes
Butter on all veg
Oopsies and cheese melted for lunch
Coconut oil fudge with a meal
Homemade holandaise on veg
Some put cream in coffee or coconut oil in coffee but I don't like it
Fatty meats yes but adding butter will bring the fat content up
Chicken thighs rolled in finely crushed pork rinds and fried in Coconut oil (It's really good)

Great ideas Cindy...it's funny how we all eat so differently within the plan....

It can be confusing if you let the numbers control you....Dr Groves' book is full of information and guidelines about his plan....the percentages are important but I think that it is more important to understand the philosophy and the science behind the plan....if I don't feel like eating veggies/fruit or anything else carby I don't eat them just to bring my carb % up to 10%..I just go with the guidelines the most important of which is to not eat to much protein....it's surprising how much fuller I am now that I leave the fat on my meat...it's a very satisfying way to eat...I can't wait to see how my May 1st WI goes....

Now..in NH % WL in chapter one Dr Groves recommends reducing carbs to no more than 50-60 and he also recommends not going under 20...I can't find the reference about if he nets carbs but i seem to remember that he doesn't....I also remember reading that he prefers that we stay out of ketosis....

I've got a break coming up and I'm going to scan my book to find the exact reference for you

Thanks for the info.. i think my book should be coming any day so that will clear up some of the questions I hope. You all have been so nice and answered my questions very well.

I think I need to plan more.. not much of a planner but maybe that is why I have all this extra weight too

I am a little nervous as to what do to tomorrow we are going to my sisters for a birthday party .. wondering how my eating will be???

Hi..

I think Barry means net carbs. Someone asked him about that once. However, 90 percent of your carbs should come from dairy, protein, and veggies and a tiny bit of fruit.

Everyone is so different on the amount. Just like on Atkins. Some of us are short and older, some are taller and younger, etc..Some of us are hypothyroid and some are diabetic, so there is no one rule for everyone. Plus on days people exercise and are active all day, they probably can eat more carbs, too.

I think it's always smart to start out low..say 20 net, with your protein level adequate, and not worrying about the fat too much. That way, you can get a sense of what works for you.

Waiting for Dianne.. Cya later..I might get some bathroom "stuff" at Hobby Lobby.

Not being in ketosis equals weight gain for me. So now I really need to get my book so I can read the whole program. I am afraid of not being in ketosis. At least until I reach my goal and then very very slowly maybe. Is it the amount of fat that enables you to be out of ketosis and still lose? oh, maybe I just need to wait on my book. I really don't expect an answer to my ramblings. I really just need my book to come!

Leisa, a few things I have found out that I thought were really interesting. One was if I took 2 days menus, with identical numbers and calories, with one day being heavy in coconut oil and one being heavy in olive oil, on the olive oil days I was never even in trace ketosis and would always stall. On coconut oil days, I was in moderate ketosis by evening and would lose. I would have to experiment further but it seems saturated fat is more conducive to energy production. I think olive oil is a very healthy but it stalls me bad!

Now, I am experimenting with macadamia nuts, which are monounsaturated. In fact, I had a minor binge about 5 days ago with 3 ounces of macadamia nuts! That was about 660 calories with 72 grams of fat! Only 6 carbs but still! I never gained an ounce! That was in addition to my regular 1660 calories day so there may be a difference in tropical nuts and olive oil, even with just looking at them, they are both monounsaturated.

I like using keto sticks to see how different things effect me. 1 slice of LC bread (they say 1 carb but the consensus on this forum is it is closer to 3.5) is fine, 2 slices and that's it, ketosis done. What I'm getting at is you can take 2 items with exactly the same macros and your body will handle them differently.

Barry is not a fan of ketosis, citing that his wife was in full ketosis for 4 months and her weight never budged. I like to stay in mild and if I'm not in ketosis, I review what I've eaten to look for a trend.
