It's all a matter of balance....

Yesterday was the first day I attempted to eat in acceptable ranges. I was aiming for 2000 calories, and this is what I ended up with:

Calories: 2317 (over by 317)
Carbs: 51 (under by 24)
Fat: 137 (under by 7)
Protein: 130 (over by 30)

I know I've got some tweaking to do...this will take some practice!

Yup, it will..at first, you may be able to "get away" with more calories, then as you lose, you will probably have to drop down...

Good luck and keep us posted.

WRONG i gained back the weight i had lost since Feb 28th... so after reading My New Book... i ate totally Natural yesterday AND took my Calories DOWN to 1500 and today and Lost 2 Pounds! how can that be?!?!? i dont know HOW it happened BUT i will Totally eat Pure & Natural from this day forward...! i mean Pure & Natural...! NO PROCESSED ANYTHING!!! Barry makes So Much Sense in the book! i read half the book Friday night and the other half Saturday morning... and it reeeeeeeeeeeeeally makes So Much Sense! if you dont have the book - you really should get it! you can buy it at Amazon or probably a book store near you... its only about $15 and now i compare it to My Low Carb Bible i Thank God for this Knowledge! Mee: Wowwoo..Good for you. You know, people will say that you "have" to eat lots of calories, etc..And, that might be true for them, but certainly not for me if I want to lose
weight.

1500 calories is a good number for you, obviously. The very bottom line for calories is 1000 or a bit more. However, as we "age"..I'm there, too, our metabolisms slow down. On LCing we should be able to eat a bit more than if we were doing the Low Fat/High Carb thing, but not a ton more.

Each to his own and finding what works for ya..

Yesterday was a better day. My carbs were still a bit low (39) but everything else was pretty close to target. I am noticing that my weight keeps going down each day...so I must be doing SOMETHING right!

Hey Carolyn: I've been away for a bit. Yes, those are all my kitties (Sabrina, Tinker and Rocko), plus three more that live outside full time (Gracie, Lucie and Simon Yowell). Our three indoor cats seem to sleep the day away, and are just TOO nocturnal sometimes! (Rocko likes to lick my nose or sit on my head at night....sheesh!!)

I had kind of a false start with this Way of Eating, but now I am committing myself to it!

I just read a little article by Taubes who's own research corroborates just about everything Groves has said and it struck home. I think Groves also said the same thing in places. What struck me is that Taubes said in order to lose fat, we need to give our bodies no other sources of fuel but the fat in our cells and get the insulin levels down to where all the other hormones are forced to take the fat from our cells. And the way to do that is reduce the carbs to keep insulin down (best done by fat intake). The key is to give our bodies less fuel than it requires so we have to burn the fat. I've been losing the same 5 pounds for last few weeks and I think this is why. I'm not taking in a deficit of fuel regularly. Some days I am and other days it is even.

Groves keeps emphazing that our bodies will self regulate to the correct intake if we eat fat and protein and only a little carb. I'm thinking that this also works when you are too fat - you eat what it takes to maintain that weight, while we want to eat a little less than that to lose it.

I'm going to try this gambit: Before every meal and when I get hungry, I'm going to drink a cuppa tea with a teaspoon of EVCO in it. That will give me a little fat fuel and maybe I will do better at eating less on a regular basis.

So in other words, for those of us that are really obese, we shouldn't worry about starvation mode?

I doubt that, but just going by your hunger might not be enough deficit to actually lose weight. Starvation does other things to you. From all I've read, you have to eat adequate protein to keep your body from using your muscles as fuel. Then fat to get your body using fat as fuel. It's the carbs that seem to be optional.

For me, the EVCO in tea seems to dampen my hunger pangs, so that is why I'm thinking I had better make it a habit to drink that before I eat anything. I'm still looking for that balance.

dahlquist, also an advocate of high fat says that you'll lose weight naturally w a no sugar/starch diet. i don't think she really goes for ratios and she says only try a bit of starch AFTER you've lost the weight. that may be the real key. barry says a certain amt of carb but doesn't give any rules for where it comes from. so if we are IR, starch/sugar are probably going to hold us back from reaching goal.
