Barry Graves - What is his take on fish oil supplements?

Hi all you EFGT gurus

I don't have any books on this gentlemen so if you have the info, kindly share?

I am curious what BG says about fish oil supplements.

Yes or no while eating this type of plan?

tia..

He's not wild about them. Says they have too much polyunsaturates. You should look at his web sites - most of what he's got in his books are on them. I posted some links on the ebook thread or google him.

Quote:
Fish, whether in the cold arctic or in warmer waters, contain a higher proportion of polyunsaturated fats than do warm blooded animals. In the tropics, where diets tend to include lots of fish, coconut oil is also eaten in plenty. South Pacific islanders are protected from the harmful effects of the polyunsaturated fats in the fish by the saturated fats in the coconuts. It is also noticeable that human cultures in the tropics eat high levels of saturated coconut oil and they don't suffer heart disease.- Barry Groves Online Nutritional Information and Nutritional Facts - Second Opinions, UK
Reading his books is very interesting. He makes a good case for bucking the current medical advice. I think his take on the supplements is that they are unnecessary if you are eating a good diet and taking them can through you out of balance. But he doesn't go on and on about them being terrible either.

I'm still plowing thru his Trick and Treat book along with Taubes Good Calories Bad Calories.

I don't think he has done studies himself. What he has done is go over the tons of research and data there is and shown how many times the medical establishment comes to the opposite conclusion than the data show. Gary Taubes does a similar job - nice to see the corroboration from a well respected author.

I see. Thats interesting. But I have it ingrained that fish oil lowers triglycerides and a few other things. But I asked because with the fat content, meat, etc..I was wondering if he supported such supplement.

Thanks for the reply

He is very against polyunsaturated fats and cites real studies that repeatedly show that they cause cancer. He even said that when they want to induce cancer in lab animals, they feed them a lot of polyunsaturated fats. His issue with the cold water fish oils is that they have a high concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids to keep their tissues from freezing.

I also have trouble tying to figure out whether they are good or bad. It is really hard to unwind so many years of claims. But he and Taubes show so clearly how bogus the claims of the studies have been over the last 50 or so years, that I'm not sure that the claims of fish oil being so good have any real science behind them or not. There are so many studies that have been claimed to show one thing, but the data really show the opposite.

Thanks. I know, it is so true. Engrained deep. I am going to stick with my fish oil but I am attracted to EFGT in general. I know if I up the fats, lower the protein, I can go along time without wanting to eat. Thats a good thing.

Hey, thanks for answering! I really appreciate it.
