Morning everyone.
Sandy, I go through the same thing when sick anymore, #1, it takes me a long time to get over things and #2, takes forever to get my energy back. I just had to replace my router, got it replaced easily enough but then my printer was messed up, everything is connected anymore and has to have the right "key" to operate correctly. And, every so often my printer decided to default to printing upside down and backwards, had no idea what that was but found a setting for "mirror image" which had somehow got turned on???? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Rebecca, so glad to have you in here. Don't worry how closely you follow EFGT, just join in our little group.Sorry to hear about the diabetes. Now, to control it without meds, do as I say, not as I do. When I was first diagnosed, I was sooo good and went to low carb immediately. I never even thought of doing the diet they gave me, it is too high in carbs IMO. When I went back to the dr. after 6 weeks, she said I was doing great and it was up to me whether to go on metformin or not, but she thought it was to my advantage to do so. One, she thinks it helps the diabetes and two, she said not very many people are able to maintain the lc enough to keep the blood sugar numbers down. So, I went on the metformin and continued doing very good doing lc. I settled into a really moderate carb, about 30-50 a day with the metformin and did well and lost weight until the holidays. The weight loss came from both the keeping the blood sugar low and consitently low and the fact that the met really upset my stomach. Then the holidays hit and I lost my motivation, and gave into the sweets, junk, etc. some times I could eat quite a few carbs and get by with it, which gave me the wrong messge of course, but other times my blood sugar got pretty high. My weight went from 210 back to 218 in about 6 weeks of messing around. then I got back in control and got it back to 210 and then I tried VLC and got my weight down to 206 recently. I was delighted but started having binge attacks from trying to be so strict and started having lots of stomach problems with my metformin, and have been told that going to low in carbs while taking that is not good on your tummy. So, now I am back to moderate carbs and my weight is hovering around 210. I have been super busy lately and feel like I need some time to concentrate more on my diet and work a little harder to lose some more weight. This week I am at DD#2's house, babysitting DGS 9 months and my DGS 9 is coming later today and staying here too as he is on spring break. I am hoping that next week I can get back to my kitchen and my normal schedule and do a little stricter eating and maybe drop a couple more lbs. Well, have to go fix a bottle and get ready for nap time, will come back and finish this.

Lise, that is awesome! Any of the LC plans are great for diabetes but if your Dr. is like mot, they will direct you to the diabetes diet which is about 45 carbs per meal. My endo is great and likes the LC approach and tells me that they are revamping the diet they tell people to follow but I don't think it has happened yet.
Rebecca, the best thing you can do is really educate yourself about diabetes and the health problems it causes if you don't control it, you do not want to not take care of it. But, if you do take care of it and yourself, you can live pretty normally. Let it go and you will suffer many many problems, I see it in my brother who never has taken care of his and he is in terrible health today. BBL everyone |

Buffy...you are right....the Diabetes clinic here really pushes the food pyramid...*ack....my doc knows what I am doing and she doesn't exactly support me but she can't argue with my numbers.....
![]() My mom has type II as well and we have the same doctor....she has her on Metformin, Altace, baby asprin.....and eating carbs galore....no thanks....but mom won't listen even as she sees me getting smaller and having good labs.... ...It drives me nuts that even with myself as evidence I still can't make people believe....one of my brothers and one of my sisters have it too and they just gobble those pills and the carbs....my sis has gained weight since diagnosed and is now on the insulin..... ![]() |

I don't know how long routers usually last. This one lasted 4 years and it wasn't even totally broke until I started on it, lol. I have a techie coming in the a.m. I'm lost w/o my laptop on my lap. Where it belongs! Right?
I spent a few hours with Dad. We met my DD for lunch and then went for a walk in the park for his rehab. He's doing better so hopefully after he gets back from my sister's he'll be great. He leaves Fri. and will be back Good Friday. Maybe I can get back to the gym routine while he's gone and then stick to it when he gets back. I think it's been at least 2 months since I've been. What with his surgery and rehab, my vacation and my 2 bouts of illness. Calgon where are you??

Boy, I just got a lot of great recipe ideas from Cleo's site (The Lighter Side of Low Carb) and a sticky on this site called, get this, "Induction Food Porn". It truly is porn! There are pics of lovely, half naked BBQ ribs, fried chicken, whipped cauliflower, cauliflower potato salad (sans potatoes), cheesecake, pizza, a lot of Oopsie things. Man, I have a list of things I'm making tomorrow. One is frying chicken thighs using pork rinds as a coating and the other is off Cleo's site called cauliflower pizza crust. It got rave reviews and the pics are sinful! She also slices these up to make "bread" sticks and rolls it out thin to make lasagna noodles. This is crazy! I'm going to have to call into work, not sick, but cooking! This low carbing is going to be easy with great recipes like these. I've got so many choices, I can't decide what to do first. Bought wine for tomorrows cooking class. Looking forward to it but low carbing all day tomorrow until the class and definitely back on the band wagon Wednesday.

I fell again today at my daughter's. I was walking out with DD2 and my ankle just gave away. It did it the Friday before Christmas too. Man, my knee just healed and now it's skinned again. Going to go to bed shortly, I feel like I'm living on borrowed time today. Tomorrow when I wake up it will be another day and all will be well. LOL.
Thanks for the info on the diabetes, ladies. I'm watching my carbs but I'm going to cut them back even further. Nite!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Happy St Patty's Day!! Not doing the corned beef thing as I'm not a big fan of corned beef. I used to have a recipe where you baked it, them used a ketchup brown sugar galze on it and that was good. Becky, I am so sorry for this setback. What about strengthening excercises? I'm the first one to say I don't like to go to the gym but weight training makes me feel much better and everyday tasks are easier. Let us know how your doing. Uh oh, feel the "effects" of eating way too may grilled jalapenos! Gotta run!!!

Top 'o the Morning All and Happy St. Pat's Day!
I am trying a new strategy today. I increased my eggs to 2 for breakie, added 1 T almond flour, 2 tsps of flaxmeal, sprinkle of psyllium, 1/2 T CO, 1/2 T splenda, splash of soy milk, when nuked for 2 mins. I topped with a little sf syrup (12g carbs for 1/4 cup) didn't have even and 1/8 cup. I haven't done the Carb count yet. Need to get the hang of fitday. I am trying desparately to cut my carbs back more without being hungry. I saw someone said to keep them under 28 a day to lose. I have been hovering around the same weight these past few weeks, up a 1lb, down a 1lb. Anyone got the Carb Counts on:- Almond Flour Flaxmeal Instant Oatmeal SF Coconut I thought I could add the above alternatives to make a sort of 'pancake.' Any comment or suggestions welcome. ..I've got Fitday open in another window so I'm going to check your carb counts for you: Almond Flour....would be the same as almonds since they are just ground almonds...so 1 oz would be 164cals, 5.6carbs, 3.3 fibre Flaxmeal....(flax seeds)....1 oz is 151 cals, 8.2 carbs, 7.7 fibre Instant Oatmeal...check the packet....I'm guessing this will vary with the brand SF Coconut....2T is 84 cals, .6 carbs, 0 fibre...this is for the desicated stuff that you find in the bakers aisle ![]() |

Morning all. Just a drive by since I am still babysitting with 9 yo and 9 month yo and let me tell you, I am not used to this. God gives you children while you are young for a reason. Having a good time though but busy, busy and no problem falling asleep, LOL.
Brought office work with me to DD's house to do while I am here and having a hard time getting hardly any done. And, she has a nanny/housekeeper that comes in daily and helps out. How on earth did I raise 4 kids by myself, have a big garden and all the other stuff I got done? I have gotten soft, and it isn't all fat, LOL. Keep on keeping on everyone, I will be back to my normal life next week. |

Susan, instant oatmeal is a killer on carbs. I use Flax z snax hot flax cereal for 2 carbs per serving (I think) and I use Walden Farms pancake syrup. It has no carbs. There are better brands but for no carbs, I'll use it. I like it microwaved warm. My goal is 20 carbs. It adds up quick which is why I live on Fitday. For stuff you use a lot, I enter the big 4 (carbs, fiber, fat and protein) into the custom food column. My custom foods are probably close to 100. Another thing I like for breakfast is Walden Farms pancake and waffle mix. Very high fiber, high protein, low carb and very filling.
Lise, as for eating more fat to stay full, how much fat (in grams) are you eating in a day and how many calories total? I must say, even though I have few cravings and am much more in control of my eating, I am still hungry every day. I eat about 1700 calories, 60-65% fat, 25% protein and a ton (!) of fiber, my weight really is about the same and I'm hungry. How much fat are you eating? |

Well, I'm here with a new router but still can't open one of my fav sites online. I don't know if their site is having a problem or what. I'm going to get my modem updated and then see what happens with a new router and a new modem. I hope something works!
Weight is holding pretty steady. I'm still tired. I'll be glad when I'm back to normal. |

Cindy....I have to honestly admit that I haven't used fitday in ages...maybe a couple months...probably ever since I read Barry's book and started following his philosophy more than the actual numbers...here is today's menu to give you an idea: B/L(11 am before I felt hungry at all)-6 oz medium ground beef formed into 2 patties and quickly fried on high heat to keep it medium rare in the middle and crispy on the outside, coffee with cream D-rib buttons, they are in the oven right now and I have to say that I am hungry for them...will weigh and measure how much I eat and report back....they are very fatty, raspberries with cream S-coffee with cream I'm going to open fitday and punch in the numbers I'm shocked that my cals are so low, my carbs are also low but that's okay: Cals...1231 Carbs...25 g (9 fibre)...8% Protein...76g (25%) Fat...94.5 (67%) ![]() Last edited by Lise; 03-17-2009 at 04:15 PM.. |

Good one, Zilla!! I do like oatmeal and used to use a lot of the old fashioned but now just use the hot flax cereal from Netrition.
I made the cauliflower "potato" salad today with CO mayo, 2 eggs and a green onion, ate 1/2 and taking 1/2 to work tomorrow. It was actually good. I used fresh cauliflower and grated 2 cups for the pizza crust on Thursday. I have a Weight Watcher friend that would eat the cauli. salad if I made it with Helmans Light mayo. That might be a nice dish to bring for a summer meal. It is in the 70's here today. My 14 y/o cat wondered out on the back deck today for some sunning. First time this spring. Neither cat goes out side so sitting on the deck in open air is very exciting! |

Ok, Lise, I would starve on that! I am hungry when I wake up but try to wait till 9:00 to have breakfast. Lunch about 12:00, snack about 3:00, light dinner about 6:00. Plug in Fitday. I'd be curious. It is surprising I weigh 123 pounds. It is constant vigilance! Fiber is always over 30 a day and I weigh and measure everything so there shouldn't be anything hidden. I think it's just me. I've always been this way but I do love LC because, even though I'm hungry, I still have control and my blood sugar isn't swinging wildly.

Cindy...I have to say that I am really shocked at how little I ate...I am honestly very full and haven't had my berries or coffee yet...if I wait too long to have my berries I will probably have a little bit of cheese or LO ribends with them...I don't like missing breakfast but I wasn't hungry and then got caught up in my work until 11ish when I got hungry...the patties were already cooked so I bolted them down and then I was fine until the cooking smells stimulated my appetite...
...I usually can't get my mind off food...or snacks like SF candy or 85% chocolate...no cravings at all for the last week or so... ...my only source of carbs lately has been the little bit in eggs, cream and my daily serving of raspberries... |

Uh, 5'7". Yes, I'm thin, not too thin but thin. Still, eating what I eat, you shouldn't be hungry. I used to weigh 152 and lost doing mostly reduced cal but was looking for something to help control carb cravings which LC does. Unfortunately, volume goes down when fat goes up. Fat is more satisfying and I feel better than when I was on my 20% fat diet, just more hungry. Looking for the right combo. I have a sneaking suspician I may have to up my carb by adding a lot more high volume low carb items. I do eat broccoli and spinch and cauliflower. My carbs are about 20. I'm going to up them to 35, all from fibrous, LC vegetables and see if that helps.

Morning friends.
My "boys" let me sleep in this morning, the baby didn't wake up until 6:30 and played in his crib until 7:30, but, I woke up at 6:00 expecting he would be waking up and kept watching the monitor to see when he would wake up! Still nice to have that hour to kind of just snuggle in and wait for him to want to get up. DGS 9 just gets up and entertains hmself though. Today I take DGS 9 to meet his mom this afternoon since she works from home on Thurs., then my other daughter is coming home on thurs. so I will be back to my house Thurs. night. This has really been fun and DD#2 has a pool, so in the afternoons when the nanny is here, DGS 9 and I are swimming and enjoying the sun, we are having temps in the 80's this week. Next week I have to get back to a normal eating schedule and lower carbs, this week I am eating moderate at best. Have a great day everyone! |

HI Buffy
Good Morning Everyone,
I haven't posted much, work seems to crowd my days. Buffy, grandchildren will make you sleep very well at night. I love my GS but when I watch him I go to sleep very quickly. He gets up early and so do I and he knows it so he really gets up all ready for action. I just want to sit, drink a cup of coffee and stare the the wall for a little bit when we get up. They are fun, though. Enjoy. |

I'm back!!!!!!!!!!
We had a great time in Sedona, AZ and Jerome..Very pretty country, but I like my trees.. This is what happens when you eat carbs...You gain 3 pounds.. So, I'm back on a protein day today and will continue until I drop some weight. Gary flew on to Reno for a convention..Beth and Shawn are in Scottsdale til tomorrow and Brett is home with me for a couple of days.. As far as eating on vacation: I really didn't stuff myself..and I left about 1/2 of my food on the plate at big meals, so that probably stopped me from gaining more weight.. Catch up with the posts later...

Great to have you back Carolyn. I didn't know Sean and Beth were going too. That must've been very nice to have a whole family vacation. I wish we could pull one of those off but I think that ship has sailed. Too many people now to pull that off no matter how bad I'd like to.
You'll drop those 3# before you know it! It sounds like you did a great job. |
