this lifestyle keeps me at or below goal. while i was lc for some years before EFGT, i struggled w the last 15 and had trouble keeping weight off. when i decreased my protein and increased fat, it all fell into place very quickly. i do not eat starch or sugar so my carbs probably do not equal 60 but if you look at an example of groves diet, you will see the same. i think that some of those on the main thread just stay here because it's become 'home'....they don't really follow any plan. but if you really look you'll find some who really have found the answer.

WOE: Low Carb/EFGT
Success story? I am not sure I can claim that sort of fame but I can report that ever since I took up the low-carb way of life I have been at peace with food, if you allow me to put it in this rather poetic way. When I was still eating carbs I was always trying to lose weight and eternally lost the battle. So I ALWAYS had a bad conscience, never really enjoyed my food because I always "knew" I shouldn't eat the fatty stuff (which I always liked) and didn't really understand why I was always hungry even though I was eating all those healthy cereals, fruit etc. Then, last February I "rediscovered" LC, it was a book that set me off again and after two weeks of adjusting I felt fine and have not been hungry since. I have also lost 10 kgs and intend to lose 10 more. But even if I don't I would never go back to high-carb because I never want to feel that way again.

For you having a hard time getting the fat in your diet and worried that you are eating too much protein, I hope this little guideline might help. Your protein requirement is your weight in kg (Pounds divided by 2.2) times about 1.5. Heres an example. My weight is 125 pounds. 125/2.2= about 55 kilograms, 55x1.5=82. 82 grams is the max amount of protein per day that I should have. I have plugged my numbers into differant sites and the number has come in at 87 grams so I just keep it under 90. The problem with going over is your body will take the extra protein you consume and convert it to glucose via gluconeogenisis. Now for fat. That can be difficult because alot of things that have have fat have protein. Eggs, cheese, ect. I have been making coconut oil fudge which is straight fat but a great fat if you are trying to get into ketosis as it is a medium chain fatty acid that goes straight to the live to be broken down into energy. Virgin coconut oil has a light coconut taste and scent but there is another type (I can't think of the name) that is tastless like Crisco. The tasteless brand I buy is in the cooking oil section at Walmart under the brand name Luann. The virgin one I use is Nutiva from Netrition. So if you are on a 1700 calorie a day diet, 90 grams of protein, 130 grams fat and roughly 50 carbs (mine is often 50-30 in fiber so my net carbs are about 20). I LIVE on ******.com to figure out my percentages and it's free. Breakfast is often 4 eggs and a peice of coconut fudge, lunch can be a low carb tort that is toasted with 1/4 cup pesto and 2 oz mozzerella cheese on top then under the broiler and another peice of fudge, once I get those numbers into ******, I see where I stand on dinner. Usually another 2 peices fudge and dinner.
Coconut Oil fudge:
1/4 cup melted coconut oil not too hot, about 30 seconds in micro.
1T Hersheys dark cocoa
6 drops liqid Splenda
dash of vanilla
Wisk everything together, divide into mini muffin cups with paper liners because they don't come out easy and put in fridge a couple of hours. They melt easily so you'll be eating them from the fridge. There are multiple threads about adding coconut oil to your diet on this site so do a lookup but his is the easiest way to get more of the kiknd of fat you need in your diet. Also Google "Coconut Oil Diet" for more info.

Cindy, thank you for taking the time to help me out with this. I am going to try the fudge recipe, sounds good. I do have the Coconut oil, i usually eat it in some yogurt, but this sound really yummy for a change.

Thanks again

Hi Sunny and Cindy,

I too just started to incorporate CO into my WOE.

Thank you for sharing those gms of Protein. Sheesh! I think 30gms = 1 oz and with your calculation that means around 3oz a day for my weight. I need to trim my protein levels down slightly. My carbs are low and now my Fat will increase from today onwards.

Thanks again,

Susan

SuSun, the grams of protein isn't a weight measurement. Like 1 oz of beef would have X grams of protein and X grams of fat. So it doesn't really relate to the weight of the meat. I'm not explaining that very well, so I hope you know what I mean. Have you used ******? It's free and it'll show you what I'm trying to say.

I just read where Groves cited 80 grams of protein is like an 11 ounce steak. That's quite a lot of meat, really.

Not if you don't eat it all at once. 3-4 ounces per meal.

Tesaje and JDM,

I was trying to measure the Eggs, Cheese, 1 sl shaved Ham and Tilapia as my main protein sources yesterday. I don't think I went over.

Today protein was egg, 2 large sausages, chicken curry,
I was quite surprized when I did ****** that the approximate inputtings were in this good range.

Today was even better ratios. Fat (75%) Carbs (6%)
Protein (19%)

Thanks for the guidance All.

On the protein (which can be confusing), I ballpark 7 grams per ounce. An egg is 7 grams of protein.

I am learning more and more each day. Hopefully by the end of a week on this WOE I will have it down pat.

Thank you all for the protein gram counts. Yes, Carolyn they are confusing huh?
I think it is all the conversion stuff.

Ok, I'm confused. I thought the protein amount was based on lean body mass, not total weigjt....although I like your version better!!

Me too...I'm confused too. If I calculate my protein allowance from my current weight, I can eat up to 150 grams, but at my lean body weight, I can eat up to 96 grams... and that is quite a difference. Can someone explain/clarify please?

there are a number of lc gurus that use total weight. i think the idea is that you'll will adjust as you lose. i guess that if you use total and don't lose then go by lbm. for me, no more than 100 g is good. it looks like i usually consume more like 90.
my food choices vary depending on how busy i am and the weather. but i usually have a smoothie for breakfast that contains 1/2 c cottage cheese (also buttermilk and some pumpkin or berries) and CO.
lunch is the biggest variable; i may just have some cherry tomatoes or apple slices w cheese. i keep a peanut butter jar handy as well. if i'm actually taking time to eat, it may be soup or a salad w a chopped HBE or a greek salad....plenty of salad dressing, yum.
dinner is chicken or beef cooked in some manner. vegies are a possibility.
usually i'll have a glass of buttermilk pre bedtime.
oh, and 1 glass of red wine is not unusual pre dinner.

i may not be the best person to post a menu since nothing is a given except for the lc part.

Thanks Jem. I think I'll just keep 90 grams as my max, and try to average at 70 grams. But I guess it all depends on how much you actually eat.

i am really making an attempt to reduce protein in the evening.
last night i made cauli 'fried rice' w some some slice steak and really felt great w no indigestion of any sort. that was probably about 3 oz, if that.
i still have some steak so will make it again tonight and weigh the meat.

the key is really to eat enough fat to be satisfied w less protein. it takes some adjusting, for sure.
