I'm with you on that one Carolyn. I've got to get back on track. NOW! I'm back to basic EFGT and am going to work it the way I know I should. I've played long enough and now it's time to pay the piper. I also am restarting my workouts tomorrow. That'll probably kill me after a 2+ week hiatus, but I'm going to push through it and get back on track. I sure don't want to undo all my good work. I just ordered some new swim suits so maybe that'll help motivate me, lol.
Thanks for starting the new week. How's '72 going? I hope it's helping you break through your set point.

NEW being the operative word! I had some uncomfortable hypoglycemic moments this weekend, realized I had eaten almost no carbs (ran out of lettuce on Friday, blueberries on Friday night, but went shopping today). UNCOMFORTABLE! So today I stocked up, but I also bought and ate 2 apples. Not too bad, since I also had them with peanut butter----BUT the "plan" was to eat only one, and save the 2nd for in case hypoglycemia struck again this week. I have learned from this that I am not to be trusted around carbs, even such innocuous ones as are found in an apple! (which wasn't even good---both were kind of flavorless, and mealy to boot!)

So I'm with you gals to have a great week, and get myself together!

Ok, first day of my fresh start. I'm up from goal to 142.5 so that's not as bad as I thought it would be. I actually was at 141.5 the day we left. The workouts are going to be the hardest I think. Just getting my head back in it. That'll be harder than the physical part I'm afraid. It's so easy to get lazy again. And of course my body is saying, "no, I'm tired", do it tomorrow, you can do it later". Anyone else's body lie to them? Lol.

Anyway, have a great day friends.

Good luck with the workouts sjl.

I posted on the other thread by accident....

My weeks start on Sunday and goes through Saturday. I think it's better to split the weekend up when counting calories!

I want to lose at least 2 lbs this week. I need that steady progress to not get too discouraged. I have a little bit of an upset stomach today. Hope the salad I brought for lunch settles okay!! I feel like having saltines but I NEVER eat those with the transfat and carbs!!

Gotta get to work. See ya later.

Ok, for anyone interested here's the link to our vacation pics. It's long but I hope you enjoy it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjfjQVDsJjs

I have a great day going so far. I had a good b-fast and lunch, did my workout after work, walked to the library and back, (about 30 min) and I feel totally satisfied.
Carolyn, I saw the SS exercises you posted on another thread and I might try those too, in my spare time, lol.

Hi.

Sandy, I loved those pictures..You look great!!!!! and your dh, too..and all those food pictures made me hungry.. Glad you had a great time..
And, you are only one pound up from when you left..That's great.

I think the key to gaining weight on a vacation is to get back on track RIGHT away..so the fat doesn't solidify on our bodies and get too comfortable..

'72 is fine...Basically, it's a Barry plan, but I think I have to watch the fat..I've said this 100 times..but I want to try to cut back on it..to about 50 percent. I know I need it, but if I'm eating too much of it, my bodyfat won't burn..especially since I'm close to goal...

Hi Lisa and Sarah and MK..Yes, Sarah..BACK AWAY FROM THOSE APPLES..one is probably a good amount, but I don't like mealy ones, either..ewww..

Carolyn

Hi gang,

Tomorrow is my clear liquid day to prep for the dreaded colonscopy on Thursday.. I got lots of chicken broth and orange and green jello..It's hard to get any calories in when you are taking in sugar free clear liquids..so I'll probably drop a pound or two..(I can only hope)..

Yes, Carolyn, prayers for an easy procedure with clean-slate results! Are you getting drugs? I can't remember. I know people who have had it done both ways, so as far as I know, it's largely an individual decision patient and doctor make.

Happy Clear Liquid Day! lol

Carolyn good luck Thursday! AND today with the liquid diet. I bet you do drop a few pounds and then you'll be almost to goal. Cool!

I'm down another 1 1/2 lbs - feels good too!!

I'm having dinner at some friends house Saturday. They are preparing Raclette. Didn't know what it was but looked it up and it's Swiss cheese and potatoes - like fondue I guess. I'm a little concerned about the potatoes. One of the hosts is a vegetarian too so I don't know what to expect. I've been there a number of times when all they had was pasta and no protein so it's kinda scarey! It's usually okay to forego dessert, but I don't know about the main meal. AND they chose ME to bring the dessert - but I guess that's better since I won't hurt anyone's feelings by not eating it.

I was strong last night and only ate what I planned - but it was hard. I was hungry - I guess because I worked out yesterday. I just finished lunch and I'm still hungry. Guess I'll go get some water!!

Good luck Carolyn,
Today will be the worst of it, I'm sure. But you will probably get a loss out of it at least.

Dharma, I hate going to eat at someone's house when you have no idea what you're going to be able to eat. Maybe you could make one of Beachgirl's Cheesecakes. At least if they didn't serve any protein you could get it in your dessert. And no one can ever tell it's LC cheesecake when I've made it.

I worked out after work today again and wow, my arms are shaky. My legs are too but not as much. It was a hard one today and I still have my abs to do. I'm going to do them later. I wanted to take Bailey for a nice long walk but I don't know if my legs would carry me very far. It's really nice out right now but that's all supposed to change tonight and I don't want to miss the opportunity. Maybe my body will bounce back after while. I hope.

I've been up since 4 a.m. I think I'm catching DHs head cold! I seem to be getting sick alot lately. Grrrrr!!! Too much vacation maybe? Lowered my immunity I guess not eating healthy.

Good idea about the cheesecake! I know everyone likes it - however I can't eat it because I'm lactose intolerant.

I'm excited today cause I put a deposit on an apartment in Barcelona to stay in while we're there in July. We'll all be able to stay together this way and I think have more privacy. It'll be me, DH, my DS28, DD23, and DS15. The apartment has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. It's kinda long and skinny but way bigger than the hotels rooms I've looked at!

Here's a picture:

Hope that works!

Oh good time for snack....

How fun! How did you find the apt? I've thought of renting a home or private condo when we go to MX but I'm always afraid something will get messed up in the planning and then I'd be left with nothing. I'm a full time worrier though. It's just what I do, lol.

A friend recommended a website - apartments all over the world for rent by owner. It's VRBO .com. She had rented some from there before so I felt like it was reliable. Although I wouldn't pay cash up front necessarily like some of them ask for. I did have to put down a deposit and then will have to pay half 2 months before. The prices were so much better than if we had to rent 2 rooms in a hotel though. And we can eat breakfast there and have coffee etc. all together. Pretty sweet!!

Hi gals..

Yes, they have been kicking in since 11:30..then I took another 1.5 ounces of that sodium stuff...ewwww...at 6:30, so I hope I'm done!!!

Gosh, that sounds like a fun apartment..I have never been to Spain..Lisa..that will be great!!! And I had raclette on vacation..years ago..It is so yummy...what could taste better than cheese and potatoes?
Well, maybe they will have a big salad..and you can pick out the potatoes..

You should make something that you CAN eat for dessert, I think..

Thanks, Sandy for the good wishes..I hope I'm out like a light!! I told Gary he was next in line after me..He is 60 and never had it done..

for you Carolyn this morning. And that's good that you're making Gary get one too. My DH and I had our first ones together. Isn't that romantic? But it worked out well. We just had to have someone come drive us home since we'd been sedated. He did great but they found a polyp on my first one and removed it so I felt a little blah for that day and the next. Then I had to have a 2nd one 2 years later and all was fine. It truly is one of the things we can do that is proactive for our health. Good for you for getting it done.

Carolyn I hope it's over quickly! I had a esophagus scope done once and whatever they gave me made me sleep right through the procedure. I hope it's the same for you.

Are colonscopies done routinely at a certain age? I've never had a doctor bring it up and I'm almost 50. Do I have something to look forward to?

Funny thing about the rental in Barcelona: I assumed they were all listing prices in euros, but happened to notice the one I wanted was in British pounds. Well the coversion rate is NOT even close. I thought it was gonna be so cheap and it was MORE than the other ones I looked at. Still a good price for a resort town though. And, it was one of the very few with 3 bedrooms in the price range. Anyway......

Holding steady this morning on my weight. I think I've found my own method for losing one or two pounds a week. All I had to do was start using Fitday again religiously and it really works for me. I know exactly how many calories and carbs I'm eating and how that corresponds to my weight loss. I'm hoping it makes maintenance easier -- but I also hope I don't have to use Fitday forever.

I'm working Saturday this week so I can go skiing on Monday. (Gotta save those vacation days for July.) With all the snow it oughta be good!

Check ya'll later.

My Dr. recommended my first colonoscopy at age 50. DHs doc too. And then every 5 years after unless of course they find something, then sooner as the doc orders. I would only do it with a doc who puts me out. I can't believe Katie Couric did it awake and on live TV!

I find I can maintain real well not using Fitday but sadly, to lose I have to track it. It's really surprising to me though, sometimes I think, wow, I've really blown it, but when I put it in fitday I'm able to salvage the day. In the old days, I would've just gone ahead and blown the whole day once I thought I already had. So for me that's one way fitday is very good for me. Of course, I'm not always that lucky, but it still puts the #s in front of me so I can't deny what I've done.

That's a bummer about the $ conversion, but it sounds like you did get exactly what you needed so it's all good in the end. I've never been to Europe. DH has no desire to go, but I'd love to see especially Spain and Italy. I'd like to go to Greece too. And England. Heck, I just want to go, period, lol.

You know, I've never had a mammogram either. I told my doctor I'd have one when I turned 50 cause she keeps bringing it up. I am NOT happy to hear that about the colonscopy. Dang.

I haven't actually traveled much myself until recently. I'm afraid of flying!! But I finally just decided it was worth it and I suck it up when I have to fly now. My son is getting married in a small town in Spain near Santiago, so we're taking the opportunity to visit Barcelona on the same trip. I think I'm gonna get addicted to these trips real quick. We're already talking about Cancun for our next vacation. Thank goodness my DH is as excited as I am.

My son AND daughter both live in Japan right now. I'm hoping we may get to visit there too sometime. Depends on how long it takes to pay off the Spain trip!!

I hate flying too. I have to occupy my mind with something the whole trip to try to keep myself from thinking that I'm really actually 30,000 feet above the earth! But you're right, if you don't fly nowadays you really don't go anywhere. We've been to Cancun several times. It's very nice down there but we realloy prefer Puerto Vallarta right now. I really just love a beach, anywhere!

How does this WOE differ from Atkins? I have tried to do some research, but no luck. Atkins just keeps popping up. I thought it must be different is some way to have this thread under "other plans".

I got this off Barry Groves website. He has an e-book that I highly recommend and that you can read more about at his site. There is tons of info there.

http://www.second-opinions.co.uk/

Hope this helps explain a little.

Low-carb, high-fat diet and weight loss
There is just one other consideration: If you want to lose weight, the actual material you want to rid your body of is fat. But to do that you have to change your body from using glucose as a fuel to using fat – including your own body fat. This is another reason not to use protein as a substitute for carbs, as protein is also converted to glucose.

If you think about it, Nature stores excess energy in our bodies as fat, not as protein. It makes much more sense, therefore, to use what we are designed by Nature to use. And that is fat.
So what levels of carbs, fats and proteins are required?
Clinical experience and studies into low-carb diets over the last century suggest that everybody has a threshold level of dietary carbohydrate intake where the changeover from glucose-burning to fat and ketone burning takes place. This varies between about sixty-five and 180 grams of carbs per day.[xv] If your carb intake is below this threshold, then your body fat will be broken down to generate ketones to supply your brain and other cells that would normally use glucose. In the early trials for the treatment of obesity, carb levels were very much reduced to supply only about ten percent of calories. This works out at around fifty or sixty grams of carb for a 2,000 calorie daily intake.

For diabetics, the level may need to be lower to counteract insulin resistance. Typical levels of carb intake for a type-2 diabetic are around fifty grams per day; the level should be lower still at about thirty grams a day for a type-1 diabetic.

A Polish doctor, Jan Kwasniewski, who has used a low-carb diet to treat patients with a wide range of medical conditions for over thirty years, recommends a ratio of one part carb to two parts protein to between three and four parts fat, by weight. I see no reason to disagree with this. What it means in practice is that on a 2,000 calorie per day diet, we should get:
Ten to fifteen percent of calories from carbs
Twenty to thirty percent of calories from protein and
Sixty to seventy percent of calories from fats.
Or put another way, as it is difficult to work out percentages in this way, fifty to seventy-five grams of carb and the rest from meat, fish, eggs, cheese, and their natural fats.

The main difference is you don't eat as much protein and you start off with more carbs. There is no induction period. Fitday figures the ratios quite well for you. I don't even have to watch my calories doing this WOE although some do.

Hi everyone..

Well, I passed with flying colors..No polyps..and I was out like a light..Thank you, God for answered prayers. So, I am happy, happy, happy..And don't have to have one for 10 years..(the dr. said)..Gary hasn't signed up yet, but he will..

Especially with the insurance..you want the 2 for 1 sale once you get your deductible paid..LOLOL

I was so glad that I was off that clear liquid day..I guess I love food too much, because my chicken tasted so great at lunch..

Dharma: Yikes..I know what you mean about the pounds/euros..We are going to Germany/England this May with dd/dsinlaw and ds... Luckily, DD works for Marriott so we can stay at the Marriotts for $39 in Germany..One of her perks..You will have a great time in Spain with the wedding, etc

Back on the plan..
