My doctor had all kinds of misinformation about Atkins when I told her that's what I was doing. I set her straight for the sake of the next patient, but I wasn't asking her permission in the first place. I do my own research (clearly more than her on diet), and make my own decisions. She's a good doctor and I trust her judgment on diagnostic issues, but she works for me, not the other way around.

BTW, we had the conversation close to a year ago, and ever since then, she's seen my progress, seen that my kidneys haven't exploded , and seen that my labs in general have remained very good to optimal. She's now firmly behind my decision.

I hope you get good results on your labs.

Fortunately you don't need your doctors permission.

I wish I had just listened to Atkins 40 years ago instead of listening to the nutritionists and doctors...and believing them. I honestly believe if I had not continued to try things like the typical calorie counting, low fat/high carb diets like WW, I would never have become insulin resistant and ballooned up to 330 pounds.

However, if you come back with an A1c higher than 5-5.2, you might want to get ahold of Dr. Bernstein's book as well.

The awesome thing is that you had preliminary bloodwork done. Go back in 6 months or a year and have the same blood work done - and watch your doctor become a believer. lol

I stick to Dr. Bernstein's (Diabetes Solution) of 1-1.5gm per kilo of ideal weight. So I eat around 60-63gm per day.

I still have trouble figuring out proper amount of protein to eat. I should have paid more attention to kilos in school.
