At what point did you get taken off your meds?

In another post, I mentioned that my doctor said that maybe by early next year, I can be off my diabetes meds.... and maybe even all meds.

Currently:

A1c is 7.2 ( down from 10.2 two months ago )
Blood sugar down to 118 from 290

It was one year and eleven months from when I started low carb. My numbers were similar to yours. I will admit I am almost fanatical about staying on plan and I have told my Dr. if I get an A1c above 5.3 I will be going back on metformin.

I hope it works as well for you as it has for me. I have to be careful not to get on my Dr Bernstein soap box but I have never had anything work this well before. Ok, stepping off the box.

Some Drs feel an A1c of 6.0 is fine but I want to keep mine below 5.2 because that is an average blood sugar reading around 95.

Keep us up to date on your progress.

I stopped taking meds about (hard to remember right no) 2 months after going strict on Dr. Bernstein's diabetic diet. My numbers were staying down to the low teens but it was hard to adjust the meds without having crashes, so I just stopped taking them. Within another 2-3 weeks (I think), I was running easily around 90-95. I really watched my 2 hr post prandial and did some random ones through the day though because I was interested in what my BG was doing throughout the day. The swings are what took me from hypo to insulin resistant and that to diabetes. So it was important that my Bg's were stable.

I still test frequently and if I start to see the swings or it not coming down at the 2 hr pp, I'll probably talk to the doc about options.

Well, I don't know what to make of all this.... my doctor said it was probably OK to just take BS readings every other day or so, but can do more if I like.... as long as I stay on strict LC.

My .02...I'd continue taking them before and after meals and at random times for awhile so *you* know what's happening. Doctors are usually happy when diabetics get their blood glucose below 120. Many don't consider you a diabetic until you have readings over 124. That shocked me a bit considering 85-90 was considered normal for a non-diabetic.

I was put on 1000 mg Metformin 1000 mg/day at my original diagnosis. That, weight loss and low carb and I was down to below 6 (from about 9) in 6 months. He dropped me to 500 mg a day.

I remained there for 3 years, keeping my A1C below 6, until he took me off completely. I frankly was concerned, but I've done all right, and I'm not consistently low carb, though I need to be.
