WOE: Low Carb
Apidra and Lantus

My doctor just prescribed these today. I'm interested in hearing about others' experiences and anything I need to look out for (besides hypoglycemia).

I've been instructed to take 5 units of Apidra if my BG exceeds 300. I will be taking 20 units of Lantus every night.

this is a tiny dose of the short acting Apidra since you are new to this. it will probably take a lot more to get your blood sugars normal. the target should be never exceeding 140 after meals and that takes some work for many of us!

if your blood sugars really get to 300, I suspect you need a lot more than 20 units of Lantus too, but again they need to see how you react to the insulin to adjust the dose over time

I hope they have asked you to measure your blood sugar levels pretty frequently... if you indicate you are willing to do this to get your blood sugar under control faster they hopefully will give you a prescription for a LOT of test strips so you can do this without busting your budget.

when I was not low carbing years ago my total insulin injections were over 150 units a day, just to put it in perspective. this spring I had it down to only 16 units a day, but for some reason it's back up to more like 30 now. this is eating pretty rock bottom carbs.

good luck with this!
