Hello friends....

New guy on the block, here. Question for you folks. When you test after a meal, does the time begin when you first start eating, or when you finish your meal? If I start to eat at 11:30, do I test at 1:30 , or at 2:00 when I may finish eating at noon? clear as mud?

Jenny Ruhl, who wrote Blood Sugar 101, suggests testing 1 hour after end of meal, striving for blood sugars under 140mg. 2 hours after end of meal they should be under 120. Any time your blood sugar remains over 140 mg you are doing damage to your organs. This is what she refers to as "eating to your meter". In the beginning you might find yourself testing quite often until you get a feel for what causes your blood sugar to spike. After a while you get the hang of it. I don't test nearly as often unless I eat something new and need to see how I reacted to it. Great book if you haven't read it. Good luck to you! :hiya:

the thing is, this varies by person and by your diet too

I sometimes find my blood sugars peak as fast as one hour, but sometimes it's more like 3-4 hours.

If you are able to afford the test strips to do it, I suggest testing at 1, 2, 3, and 4 hours after various sorts of meals to see what your pattern is, then using that as your standard.

If you tell your doc this plan and your health plan covers it, you may get a prescription for more strips so it's not so expensive. good luck!

oh, and my endo says to time from the beginninng of the meal, but again, it makes more sense to use your head. if you eat over a long period you might want to take the midpoint?
