Insulin resistance tests

I was diagnosed with insulin resistance 2 months ago. I've kept under 20 carbs a day but have slow weight loss, 10lbs in 2 months. I was wondering what happens if I go have my fasting blood tests and my insulin is still high? Anyone been here? just want to know what to expect

Wow! 10 lbs in 2 months is a great weight loss. I'm fairly new here and am awaiting my retest also. I go in next week for a blood draw and then Dr's on April 15th. Hopefully my numbers have dropped after 3 months of LC eating. If not, then I don't know.

it means you have insulin resistance. I don't think you DO anything. just be aware that you need to stay on top of resisting carbs and sticking to plan and trying to lose some weight too. it tends to be a precursor to diabetes, and that is NOT a superhorrible thing either, just a condition to be dealt with. anything you do to keep carbs low will help, but it doesn't promise these things won't still happen. they won't be as bad for you though, we know that! good luck.

I agree, 10 lbs in 2 months is fantastic! I think your numbers will keep getting better for you as you lose. Keep up the great work!

I have been on metformin for a number of years now because of high fasting insulin due to PCOS. If your insulin doesn't normalize with diet alone that would probably be the next step. It's quite a safe drug and likely has some beneficial side effects beyond insulin sensitization. I take 1500 mg/day of the extended release version (better than regular to combat gastrointestinal side effects). Low carb eating + metformin are doing a good job controlling my PCOS symptoms.

When you say you have very high fasting insulin, do you mind sharing the result? I was yold mine why high but with range so they ignore it. I am also planning to take metormin because i have a 'possibility" of pcos.

I've been on metformin a number of years now (at least 5, I think. maybe more) so I don't remember exactly, but it was in the high 20's or possibly low 30's (normal range 2.6 - 24.9 mcU/mL). My number last year was 19.6, and that was when I was on metformin but eating carbs. I have another doctor visit in May so I'm hoping the number is a bit lower this year, as I've heard around 10 or less is optimal. My fasting gluocse was always fine, even on a high carb diet. The past two years it was 88 mg/dL (normal range 65-99). I plan to get both of those done, plus A1C, this year.

That's great! Is your insulin under 5 for the doc to consider it normal though? The only place I have seen that low a number metioned is Mercola's site, and I don't particularly care for Mercola....
