"Alkaline water" & I've been getting NORMAL readings!!!

Just want to share my experience...I hope it may help someone but of course if you try this, please be careful! I am not a doctor & YMMV!!!

Another member mentioned on a thread that her diabetic sister was doing an "alkaline diet" and drinking "alkaline water", and she'd lost 28lbs in 5 weeks, including one week of vacation! I got very interested and although she hasn't sent me the food lists yet, I have been drinking "alkaline water" throughout the day and my afternoon readings, which would normally be around 100-120*, have been under 90 very consistently, and right at 80 or even 78 several times! Also, I have NOT felt the least bit shaky or weak; one time my BG was in the 60s, which freaked me out a little bit, but honestly, I felt fine!

(*I don't take insulin, but I'd often take my BG in the late afternoon--at least 3-4 hours after lunch--if I started feeling hungry, grumpy, sleepy, shaky, etc...just to see what was going on.)

Also--my friend's sister went from using 23 units of insulin a day down to 9!

There are some pricey products out there--filters & "wands" & whatnot--that claim to make alkaline water. But I have been adding minerals (like coral calcium & magnesium) to my water. I even used baking soda for a while, but I think it caused me to retain water. There is also a product called "pH Drops" by Body Rescue, which I use.

Fresh limes & lemons work, too. They're not alkaline themselves, obviously, but the effect on the body is alkalizing. A few days ago, my BG was 125 a few hours after lunch; I squeezed an entire lime into a glass of iced tea, and 2 hours later, my BG was 80!

Apple cider vinegar is said to work in a similar manner, but I just can't drink it.

Oh--I haven't lost any weight yet.
But I am pleased with my BG results!!!
And I have a lot fewer cravings for sweets, even to the extent that I am not drinking much coffee, iced tea or things like Crystal Light/MiO/diet soda.

There are a lot of "pH diet" books and food lists out there, if anyone's interested. One I picked up from my library is "The pH Miracle for Diabetes" by Robert O. Young. (And--ugh! it's not a miracle, it's SCIENCE, which is the opposite of a miracle...) The diets tend to be vegan, gluten-free, recommend lots of raw food, etc...which I find tedious. The diet the friend's sister is on sounds more "normal"; she was avoiding bread & sugar but eating cheese & beef & corn on the cob (!!!), and drinking wine. I can't wait to get HER food lists!!!

PS--I'm Type 2 and take metformin.

Thanks for this post. It's very interesting.

I'm going to try the fresh lime and lemons and see what it does for me. I have the ACV, but it's hard for me to drink also and it makes my back teeth hurt even when using a straw. But it didn't lower my sugar levels when I drank it.

Hi Piratejenny

I have been researching alkaline diet/alkaline water after reading your great post. I'll try anything to keep my BS down in a "normal" range.

What is confusing is some sites say that a certain food is alkaline and another will say its acidic. For example oysters. I was hoping there was at least some kind of seafood that was alkaline. One says oysters are, another say there are not.

And citrus fruit. Seems strange for them to be on the alkaline list.

Thats what I love about the net. So much information, but sometimes very confusing.

And...I know, those lists can be confusing.

Personally, I try to use the term "alkalizing" rather than "alkaline", because you could test a food with a pH strip before ingesting it, and it might be acidic (like limes/lemons), but the effect on your body will be alkalizing.

In the case of something like oysters, it *could* be that raw oysters are alkalizing while cooked ones are not. Cooking & pasteurization change the effect of some foods.

If anyone is truly interested in trying this out, I recommend getting pH strips or tape (the tape is more economical) so you could test different foods/minerals etc and their effect on *you*.

Well, I drank my water yesterday with a bit of lemon juice and a slice of squeezed lemon and my BS stayed down all day. This morning it was 87 ! I haven't been that low in while, more hanging around the 100 mark for morning BS.

Just checking in. Going to try drinking my water like that again. I actually felt better hydrated.

Interesting that you felt better hydrated! That can help keep one's blood sugar down, too (larger volume of blood=lower concentration of sugar).

I did some research on this since I was interested to learn what can be eaten and what not. It looks like you cannot have any meat.

I'm not doing any different diet. I just added lemon to my drinking water and my sugars are down!

Babsy, some plans say to eat about 70% from the alkaline lists. The other 30% or so can come from meat, dairy, etc.

Other times that I've considered an alkaline diet, I thought it was "all or nothing" and didn't even want to try. But just changing the percentages bit by bit until I'm eating more green veggies & raw/whole foods seems more reasonable.

OTOH, the alkaline water is helping my bg quite a bit without any major dietary changes!

How much citrus did you add to your water (and how much water)? Did you drink the juiced water all day, or just a glass or two?

Eric,

I just added either a splash of real lemon from the green bottle, or a good slice of a fresh lemon squeezed and then dropped into the glass with ice and about 16oz of water. I drank it like I would my usual water.........which is ALWAYS hard for me to do. I also added a little sweetner to a few and it was like lemonade.

I didn't overdo the drinking of the water

I drank it like a person asking for lemon in their water

Your not rude, I wouldn't have thought about it till I saw original post. So it was an easy thing to try, and I don't know why but it worked for me I will check in to let you know if my body gets used to it and changes.

It's really cool that is ascribes numerical values to the foods, per ounce.
Most lists basically just say, broccoli good, diet soda bad.

I may have been retaining water when I first took it, but my hands & feet didn't get puffy & itchy the way they normally do (when it's very humid or I've had Chinese food, for example). As Bethy mentioned, maybe I'm just better hydrated.

Want to update that I am back on the baking soda as of yesterday, because it just KILLS my appetite. Yesterday I had dinner before 5pm (green salad with a can of tuna and a little bit of pasta salad) and didn't eat or drink a single calorie before going to bed at 12. Today I had breakfast at 10am and still wasn't very hungry at 6pm, but I've been trying to eat dinner before 7pm, so I had a salad and some chicken (no carby ingredients). Well, I did have some iced coffee with light cream around 2pm, but no solid food between 10 and 6.

I haven't checked my afternoon BG in a few days due to being out of the house or having a snack before I think about testing. I'll try to do it more often so I can share.

I still get high FBGs, 112-116. That hasn't changed in months.
I do hope, though, that my A1c will be better since my average BG is lower for several hours during the day.

I put 1/2 tsp in a quart-sized water bottle, 3 or 4 times a day.

You might want to start out with 1/4 tsp, since baking soda is high in sodium, to see how it affects you. Also, you are much smaller than me.

wow... what interesting conversation. I could take the apple cider vinegar but it did nothing for my bs numbers. I will try the lemon and lime more often! I usually eat them after squirting my water with them!

This is a fascinating conversation. I've been getting high fbg in the morning (sometimes around 100 or so even). I love water with lemon, especially the way Beth described with a bit of sweetener to make it lemonade. I'm going to try adding this to my diet, without changing anything else, to see how it works.

It hasn't been affecting my morning bg so much, which is around 120, but my after-meal and afternoon readings are often around 78-88.

Another bonus for the ladies (well, and anyone who has to put up with us ):

*NO* PMS cravings or munchies!!! And *NO* cramps!!!

A couple times I thought I felt some cramps sneaking up, I took 1/4 tsp baking soda in water right away, and in 10 minutes even the suspicion that I might be getting a cramp was gone!
