Confused

So, this morning I had fasting bloodwork done and he said It was 128. Now they are testing my blood for the A1C I guess. However, my non fasting bloodwork that I had done the other day and the time before that were all lower (101). Within two hours of eating. I guess I'm confused. Is it common to have a higher fasting number than non fasting?

Yes, it's called Dawn Phenomenon, where your liver dumps extra glucose into your bloodstream as a way of waking you up and giving you energy. Non-diabetics produce insulin to keep their BG in line, but if you're diabetic or insulin resistant, your BG will just rise.

Once you eat, your liver stops dumping glucose, so your BG will come back down.

That's the very amateur description of it.

Thanks! That makes sense. I have PCOS, so am insulin resistant. I'm hoping I'm not diabetic yet and I get a chance to lose more weight before I get diagnosed officially...

Well, I got my results from the A1C, she said I am not showing as Diabetic, but in a "pre-diabetic" range. So, I will keep trying to lose weight and hopefully, it will go down!

Do it now. Don't put it off like I did and let it develop. I knew I was at risk, but kept avoiding low carb. Got diagnosed last year. I'm losing weight via low carb and exercise and my numbers are great now. Only on one medication. Wish I could rewind time and get healthy before I crossed that line though. Best of luck to you!

Thank you I'm back to strict low carbing tomorrow. I need to go to the store! I'm hoping low carbing will also help my blood pressure! I take meds for that! and well I want to conceive a baby in the next few years and there is no way its going to happen at this weight with PCOS in full swing.

If you don't mind my asking, what was your A1C?

Things may have changed in the past 15 years but you definately want to watch it before being pregnant.

My experience:
type II diabetes (I took pre-diabetes as meaning not diabetes so i did nothing), HAD to have insulin because oral meds don't work during pregnancy.

DD born one month early with hole in heart. Read afterwards that incidence of hole in heart babies is much higher with insulin taking pregnant moms.

Do whatever you can NOW!

ALSO, not only is avoidance so much better than dealing with diabetes but i'm learning (through experience) that aging sometimes makes it harder to control bs sugar as well.

The longer you can postpone diabetes the better!

I don't think I even can get pregnant without losing weight. My PCOS is so bad I don't even ovulate at this point.
