fasting BS still a bit high

I am now up to 18 units of Lantus at night. This morning my BS was 103. When i first started on Lantus, my numbers were below 100. I'm not sure what to do. Should I keep upping my dose?

At this point, I'm happy with what I'm eating and I don't really want to change anything else.

Any suggestions?

FYI:my numbers are great during the day. They stay down below 100 for the most part. They sometimes go up a little bit over 100 after I've eaten.

I just want healthy numbers!!

I'm sorry. My fasting BG is always the worst too. If your postprandial numbers are good then I'd try not to worry about a few points difference with the fasting. I'm no expert but it seems in my experience and from what I've read that the fasting numbers are really just not nearly as good an indicator of how you are doing compared to your postprandials.

Eat a protein snack before going to bed. You may be dealing with the Dawn Phenomia (spelling?) and as saponaria said the fasting isnt as important as the pp's 1 hr no higher than 140 and 2 hr no higher than 120. If its higher then the food you ate is to much for your system and either its gone or smaller portions. A great site for low carb diabetics is bloodsugar101.com she will tell you the reasons the numbers should be lower than the ADA recommend. has to do with keeping your appendages and eyes and kidneys. I am tired of this blood sugar business. My fasting is never where I want it to be or where it should be. During the day they are in the normal range. This morning 143. Protein before bed? I have done this and wake up with readings like 166 and 155. Arrrgh!

I totally agree! There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason to my BG levels. I am always high in the morning and have had lows down to 36 without meds.

dsalazar4- you need a doctor who will listen to your concerns and help get you the medicine that you need to keep you BS in check. Even though you are eating a LC diet, that doesn't mean that you don't need a little more help. I had rather be on medication, in my case a nightly injection, than to have high reading everyday. It's just not worth risking damaging my vital organs.

I take a Lantus injection at night, and it helps keep my BS in normal range even the rest of the next day. If I don't take it, although my readings are still in the high normal range, I feel better when you are in the truly normal range.

I just got diagnosed, too. Doctor wants to test again in 6 weeks to see if it is going down any. I went ahead and started testing to see where I'm at and noticed that mornings are EXTREMELY high. So, last night, after reading on these boards, I tried a stick of cheese with 5 almonds right before bed. This morning, my numbers were down from a high of 197 (yikes!) to 154. That is over a 40 point difference. Might be worth a try. I am hoping as I do low carb that my numbers come way down from there, but if not, I'm going to ask the doctor to put me on Metformin. That is crazy high for the morning.

Apparently the liver self feeds during the night and releases glycogen or something after not eating for 5 hours. that is according to a book called the Diabetes Miracle. I'm just learning about it myself. Says to eat something if you wake up in the middle of the night as it is supposed to stop the liver from doing that....Check out this link for more info on it
