Help with AM fasting levels

I'm not sure what's going on but I could use some advise as to what to try next. I recently went to my doctor with my detailed readings for a few days(I had fasting BG levels for a month.)

My AM fasting readings are always between 100-120. We decided that I would start taking Lantus at night to try and help with this problem. I started with 10 units and have increased it nightly by 1. Last night I did 14 units. I woke up with my BG at 101. The previous two mornings it was just below 100.

I'm starting to worry that my liver is messed up or something. Can someone explain this to me?

I'm not on insulin, so I'm no help there. Are you on any other meds? The Dawn Phenomenon is so weird. It took me a while to get mine under control. I experimented with the time that I took my Metformin, and finally figured out that I got the best morning numbers when I took the Met around 8:00 p.m.

I also cannot eat too much protein for dinner, or I will definitely see an increase in my morning number.

Many of my fellow diabetics who use insulin highly recommend the book "Think Like a Pancreas." Have you read it?

I haven't read it Vilya. I am reading "The Diet Cure" by Julia Ross right now, and "The Atkins Nutritional Approach. I read Dr. Berstein's book recently on my Kindle and I bought it in hardback recently so I can study it more in depth.

I can't take Metformin. It makes me so sick. My NP said that we would just stay away from it because there are so many other meds out there to use. I take the Lantus(long acting insulin) at around 8:00pm. I just don't know what to do. I am going to increase it tonight to 15 units and see what happens.

I need to get this book. My BG is always higher in the morning. I am not on insulin either. I do take Meformin and Glipizide. Last night I ate chicken salad with grapes. I knew on induction no grapes but did it anyway. I quit smoking years ago and you would think I could control what goes into my mouth but it is so hard. Today is my second day and so far I have kept to what I am allowed to have. Thanks for the tip on the book. Do you happen to know the author?

You should Google "Dawn Phenomenon." I don't understand all of the physiology involved, but it is very common for the fasting BG to be high--and the 'phenomenon' isn't important and can be controlled.

"Think Like a Pancreas" is by Gary Scheiner.

It's written for people who are on insulin, so I'm not sure it will be a huge help to you, although I'm sure there's good info in there for any diabetic.
