Need Help understanding...

new to this... Dr told me a few weeks ago that my blood sugar was 143. that was Fasting.. said if I don't lose the weight he is going to have to put me on meds... that's it.. all that was said.

today I'm speaking to my mother... she says 140 is normal...

I'm confused. I'm reading online that 143 puts me diabetic...

If my doctor would be more specific I think I could see the seriousness and get active in losing the weight for my health. Yes I Do feel bad, fatigue etc. I have all the symptoms.

How do you view the numbers.. 143 fasting? 140 would be normal for a reading after a meal?

A fasting of 143 is high enough to be dx as diabetic. Do you know your A1c? It's a blood test that gives a snapshot of your bgs for the last 3 months, with emphasis on the last few weeks. You might want to check out the website Bloodsugar 101, and Dr. Richard Bernstein's book, Diabetes Solution. They will get you well informed about diabetes.
Definitely you need to be monitoring your carbs

No, he didn't say what number. But this was testing for 3 months. Last time was 140, then 143. Says they're going up and I need to lose weight. Well I know that~! I'm talking to others now who are saying he should have told me I was diabetic, not just leaving me the "you need to lose weight". Went to Library and picked up some books. Maybe I can get a new understanding of what's going on. Thanks for input!!

Normal fasting numbers are between 75-100, max. Having a fasting of 143 would worry me. Definitely check out the Blood Sugar 101 site, as it's very comprehensive and easy to understand. It was a godsend for me when I was first diagnosed.

Good grief! I can't believe your doctor didn't get more serious about your numbers. My blood sugars were not nearly that high, but my NP said I'm definitely diabetic. Low carbing is the way to go, in my opinion. Did he even recommend a meter to keep a check on your numbers? If not, I would go straight to the pharmacy and buy one.

Dr. Berstein's book helped me so much. I highly recommend it. Good luck!

right, the "140 is ok" means that at it's highest, after eating the carbiest meal you ever eat, your blood sugar should never go over 140 or it's doing damage. The American Diabetes Association standard is that a fasting blood sugar of 126 or higher is diabetic. I think that is pretty loose, but you can see that even this conservative group says that your level is too high.

143 fasting means you are getting some (probably small) amount of diabetic damage pretty much 24 hours a day, probably. you really need to insist on getting some medication. the doctor is not the one who is going to have to deal with this in future years, you are. I am sorry to be so blunt, but I want you to take this seriously. *tight hugs*

if you eat VERY low carb, you are probably not getting really dangerous blood sugar levels, but if you eat more than about 10 grams of carbs at a time it could really start getting high.

you need a meter to test these things and find out what your situation is.

metformin is a good drug, nothing to be afraid of. it can help with weight loss too. talk to your doctor about it, why don't you?

good luck!

Thanks~ That's why I came back here, I knew the ladies here would be informative and blunt. I have been on low carb before with success, but with new meds I've gained and with this new situation, I'm ready to get my butt back in gear. It's really a now or never situation. Also considering looking for a new doctor, I've been with the same one for over 21 years. I consider him average, but always went to specialist with serious things.. I think it's time to move on.

Good for you! You deserve to have the best treatment out there. I love all of my doctors because I don't stick with one that is a moron

Update...months later. I'm now officially diabetic. Numbers running 250 across the 3 month average. still dont get the terms. but taking my Bg is running 299 to 361. Got all new meds, even changed BP meds due to kidneys. I'm still lost. I've tried to eat better and even when i ck my bg its high. came down to 190 after taking my meds. hubby said its better but not good enough, he's exwife had diabetes so he is somewhat familiar with this. He said we have to go on Low Carb, apparently it's the only thing that will work for me.

Please find a copy of Dr. Richard Bernstein's book "The Diabetes Solution". Most libraries have copies if not it is well worth buying, to keep as a reference. In it he details all of the things we need to do to get our blood glucose numbers back to normal.

I will admit it is a very strict method but it has worked miracles for me and many of the other people on this forum have recommended it as well. Even if you don't follow his method you will at least understand why your numbers are as high as they are.

Good luck

My DH was diagnosed with type 2 in November and had a A1C of 7.6. Three months later after reading Dr. Bernstein and following a low carb diet, along with 1000 mg of metformin a day, his A1C is at 5.9 which is much better. In fact that's what his A1C was two years ago before he was diagnosed (apparently though it could be considered "prediabetes" - would have been nice if his doctor had mentioned that two years ago). If you have diabetes or insulin resistance low carb is definitely the way to go.

Yes, go low carb immediately. it will work. I went from fasting bg 300, a1c 12, now my bg is usually around 90-105, a1c last week was 5.5. after meals my bg is usually around 100. reading Bernstein is good, also the diabetes miracle is good, thats what i'm doing now. whatever you decide to do, go low carb, you will see results. it is better than the alternative, if you kwim...
