I am afraid to eat!
I haven't posted for a long time but up until very recently my bg numbers had been, for the most part, within "near normal" range. There would be the odd higher-than-usual reading but it would be in the range of 5.6 (100.8) to 5.8 (104.4). My fasting blood glucose would come between 4.6 (82.8) and 4.9 (88.2)
Then three things happened simultaneously. The battery on my Freestyle Lite meter needed replacement. I needed a new batch of strips and I got sick with a sinus infection. My bg readings went haywire. I was getting fasting bgs of 7+ and even when I got lower readings the seemed higher than expected. This morning my fasting bg was 7.1 (127) and I was afraid to eat! I had a cup of coffee, my morning dose of Met anb within an hour or so it was down to 5.8 (104). Just before lunch it was down to 5.4 (97.2) Can anyone shed light on what's happening here? Infections of any sort cause blood sugars to skyrocket for many diabetics....!

Thanks Galveston Gal. I should have mentioned that the infection is now gone but the higher readings persist. It's very frustrating. Just when you think you've got your eating under control, you find out that something else becomes problematic!

I'm not on decongestants now but I am on antihistamines due to seasonal allergies. I stopped taking antibiotics and decongestants two weeks ago. I would have thought they would all be out of my system by now.
I wondered if the meter, having a new battery might also need to b recalibrated? Or could this rise also be down to allergies? |

When My Spouse is in heavy allergy season....he has had opportunity to have blood drawn during as well as then after allergy season....allergies drive up his WBC's....which is what also happens when you have an infection....hence, opportunity to elevate blood sugar as well!
....but other things as well drive it up, drugs, etc....trial and error is always key to figure it out. Maybe it is just time to get a new meter? The newer ones require a lot less blood for your sample....Then you could compare if you wanted to...but that could be a little pricey...those strips are not cheap!! ![]() |

I would blame the sinus infection for your higher readings. Illness can definitely raise your BG. And I find that when I get elevated for whatever reason, it can take up to a week for it to come back down to previous levels. I wouldn't stress about it too much, as stress is bad for BG too!
