Type Two

Hope some of you with type two diabetes can help. My husband is diabetic, and my family switched over to low carb eating to control his blood sugar. It is working well. My son, who is a business major in college, is taking a senior level class which consists of devising a complete business plan for a new consumer business. He pitched a program which offers nutritional training, menu services, a cookbook and counseling/support services online. The professors loved his idea, especially with the growing number of diabetics.

His group is doing research now, and needs input from type two diabetics. They have put together a very short survey. It is anonymous, and they will not sell the list. It is strictly for university research.

I think he and his team have a great idea. The company is to be known as BetterBetics. The survey is here:
Type II Diabetic Survey

Thanks so much for your help.

Lisa

Lisa,

I completed your survey.

I think before anyone could make an informed decision about buying the "product" or package of services your son has in mind, the would need to know which "version" of diabetic diet is being advocated and supported. The ADA plan, which advocates way too many carbs (in my opinion) is far different than Dr. Bernstein's approach, or any general low-carb lifestyle.

In our household, my dad is dying from diabetic symptoms; he eats tons of carbs and shoots insulin and is on an insulin roller coaster. I am recently diagnosed, keeping my blood glucose very stable (if still a little higher than I want) but eating very low carb. Even with the appropriate foods on hand and appropriate foods prepared for each meal, my dad will not eat properly.

The diabetes industry is glutted with people marketing goods and services, but most of them are not geared toward low-carb or any real model of overall health. If your son is in it for the money, he should cater to the people looking for cake and bread recipes rather than trying to sell "low carb" to the sheep who say, "Oh, I could never live without my bread!"

In my opinion, the survey (as it is worded now) cannot gather much really pertinent information.

Just my $.02.

I agree that it would help to be more focused on a Bernstein/Atkins approach, but the coaches in the shark tank per se do not want the team to limit their options now. They still see the term "low carb" as a marketing death knell.

Thanks for answering the survey, though. I will forward your words of wisdom to his team. I am sure if my son ever does turn this into a real business venture, he would be able to limit his approach to the methods which have been proven with his father's results. Perhaps as the team gathers more research, they will be able to demonstrate that carb restriction for diabetics is a viable health plan which is currently under served.

Endo physicians are, in general, lower carb advocates. The nutritionists I worked with are low carb advocates and they trend toward endocrinologists' opinions while taking the ADA into consideration.

Much luck to your son. The complexity of nutrition/taste/natural foods is a toughie.

A recent study documented superiority of a low-carb Mediterranean diet over the American Heart Association for people with type 2 diabetes. Unfortunately, it's hard to determine from the study exactly what they ate.

The Sonoma Diet is supposed to be a Mediterranean diet.
