Novolog 70/30 insulin started today
I started this insulin today. I'm a little nervous about it because, again, I have no real instructions on how to use it. It's just "Let's try this insulin". I'm okay with trying different ones but jiminy, a little guidance would be good!
My FBG this morning was 163 this morning so I shot 10 units, took my Metformin and had 2 eggs, scrambled, and 2 pieces of turkey bacon with coffee. We'll see what happens. Anyone have experience with 70/30? If so, please share your knowledge! Yuck, two hours after insulin and eating the BG is 172. Coffee often spikes me but you'd think with 10 units of 70/30 the BG would be better. Hmmm, this may take awhile to figure out.

I believe the 70/30 refers to 70% slow acting insulin and 30% fast acting insulin
but even the fast part of it will take 30min. or so to hit. Up till a week or so ago my eating was totaly out of controle and needing a LOT of insulin. I have been low carbing a week and now use only about 10% as much insulin as I was using. Being a man I am realy bothered by the dawn effect. The last couple of days I have been using 10units of humulin 70/30 in my stomach fat and 15units of humulin R a fast insulin and it seems to work for me. In fact tomorow I will reduce the humulin R to 10 units because my bg went a few points low this morning not a hypo just a couple of points lower than is optimal. By all means keep some fast carbs on hand in case of a hype! I have also been tapering off the caffeine to see if that helps. |

wouldn't it be easier (and maybe safer) to just use slow acting and then calculate the fast acting by the number of carbs you eat?
30% assumes you eat a certain amt and if it's higher or lower then you would have to either add more fast acting or eat a dose of sugar which just gives you crazy BG patterns...... am i making sense or misunderstanding. |

Jem, you are right. But I have a vial of 70/30 I want to use up and the way the low carb
diet is going I won't need insulin much longer. Been back on low carb about 8 days and my BG is much better. 2 weeks ago I sometimes used over 150units of insulin a day to keep my bg below 200. Today I used 10 units and my highest # was 127! |

Things have improved some but they still aren't great. My FBG the last few mornings has been close to 200 and I can't figure out why. However, the BG during the day stays fairly steady between 85 and 100. I just don't know if this 70/30 will work for me. I've been using a little Novolog before meals, too, but the more insulin I shoot, the harder it is to get the weight off.
Jem, you're right about that but I wanted to give this a fair shot. I think soon I'll be able to go to my Dr with the results and show her that my old way of Novolog and Novolin N was much better. |
