What are the best foods for diabetics to eat?

My mother age 50 was newly diagnosised with diabetes and I wanted to hear from other diabetics or those who live with a diabetic about misconceptions and the best foods to eat to maintain a heathy blood sugar. Does anyone know if splenda products are good substitues? Any suggestions?

Hi Sanjula,

There is no "one food" that is better for "diabetics" than another. Each diabetic is different. Some can tolerate more carbs than others.

The best thing for you and your mother to do is to read Dr. Richard Bernstein's book Diabetic Solution. This will help you both to understand what's happening in the body of a diabetic. It will also lay out Dr. Bernstein's diet plan.

Then there is Blood Sugar 101 ...

Blood Sugar 101

and the sister site

What They Don't Tell You About Low Carb Diets

Those two websites have been invaluable to me as Jennie explains things in a way that I could understand them.

Then the next most important thing for your mom to do is to get a meter [if she doesn't already have one] and test, test, test. Initially I would test up to 12 times a day, trying to get a handle on what foods affected my blood sugar readings. It's important that she take a Fasting Blood Sugar reading ... then test before meals, an hour after meals, 2 hours after meals etc to see when her blood sugar rises and by how much.

Generally speaking, most of us on this board, find that low carbohydrate foods affect our blood sugar the least ... however, not all carbohydrates are created equally, and what foods fit into my diet may not be the foods that work for your mother.

Others here will have other suggests I'm sure.

Good luck to your mother. It's a sobering experience getting diagnosed with diabetes ... but with a good diet, regular exercise and regular testings ... she'll do fine!
