Help me understand this please
I have never posted here before but I am happy to have found this group. I am new to prediabetes & still trying to get a handle on it.
Let me begin by saying that I have been a low carber since 2001. I never went off plan in all that time. Never the less, I began gaining weight in 06, I was diagianosed hypothyroid soon after that so I thought that the weight gain was from that. I continued to gain weight until about 2 months ago. I finally decided to order a glucose tolerance test & i hr after drinking the liquid my BS was 210. I took the test to my Dr & he started me on Metformin & said that I was extremely insulin resistant. I have stopped gaining weight in the past month since beginning the Metformin but have not lost any weight as of today. I have been testing my BS faithfully, not much improvement yet. Today my fasting was 104, not great. 2 hrs after sausage & eggs it was 114. An hour after that it is 122. Can anyone explain to me why it seems to be going up 3 hrs after eating breakfast? |

There's not a huge difference between 104 and 114 and 122. I think the accuracy is 10 to 15 % either way. I know that I can test and be at 110 and test two minutes later and the result is 120. Do I think it went up 10 points in two minutes? Nope, not unless I just ate some candy! But differences such as what you're seeing are relatively small and for all intents and purposes there's no substantial difference between the 104 and the 122.
Also, you didn't give us quantities of those breakfast foods. Fat and protein affect the BG but not as sharply or as quickly as carbs so it might be that the quantity of fat and/or protein caused the BG to rise just a tad but it took it longer. Just a couple of thoughts on this...

Bill, you're welcome! It's a reminder to me, too.
I obsess, also, and have to really keep it in check. Or try to! |

CookinsForMe is right about the variability of those meters.
