BG 153
Just went to the dr for routine tests, he wanted to check my blood for sodium and potassium as he put me on blood pressure med in April. Called me back and said my BG was 153 and when/what did I eat last? Vege sandwich with half the bread about an hour or so before. So now I go in for a fast BG check on Thurs morn. I'm doing a bit of obsessing as the BP is new and now this AND I have to have my mammo and ultra sound re-done. I've always been healthy so this is freaking me out a bit. I'm at a loss when it comes to BG as I've never had a reason to think about it. So now have checked out some books, Bernstein and Atkin's on BG and perusing the internet. Please wish me luck and after Thurs. I'll check in if it's bad and figure out what to do next. Thanks.

Glad to hear it. 153 is still a little high for post meal BGL so you may want to keep an eye on your blood sugar levels - better safe than sorry - but it sounds like all is well.

It's also possible that you have something called (going from memory here, so google for more details--I think I'm misnaming this) "Impaired Glycemic Response"--which basically means that your pancreas is sluggish about making insulin in response to a load placed on it by diet. However, a fasting glucose of 85 is perfect, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. Might be worth picking up a cheap meter (you can often get a meter with a few strips for free, without a prescription, if you wait for a sale) and checking your fasting glucose a few times over the next month or so. |

I'd get a meter, too, and check it now and then especially right before and 2 hours after eating a few carbs and maybe 3 hours after eating a protein/fat laden meal. My fasting BG was fine 10 years ago but I was diabetic all the same. The truth came out when I ate a few grams of carbs or too much protein or fat.

a meter is always a good idea.
peop who have normal fasting may have elevated throughout the day. that is much of the reason that diabetes is underdiagnosed. then there's a health problem and everyone is surprised. that's what happened to me....very sneaky. |
