Metformin - When to take it? Tummy issues?

The only instructions my pharamcist provided with my RX is to take it twice daily.

Do I take it morning and night? Or before meals?

I took my first dose last night before dinner (steak, asparagus) and spent the entire night in the bathroom. I've thrown up so many times that my abs and my back hurt!

Do the tummy issues ever go away?

I take mine morning and evening ... with breakfast and dinner.

My doctor started me on 250 mg per dose ... which didn't do much for lowering my blood sugar, but she said it was to get my system used to the drug. After a couple of months, she upped the dosage to 500 mg per dose ... so 1000 mg per day.

I was fortunate and didn't have any GI problems with it.

Sorry you're having such a rough time!

Mary

Get your doc to change your prescription to the extended release version, if that is not what you already have. I just did this this week.

I take it three times a day with my mood. Metformin is really the only reason I eat breakfast but it's working! If I take it without food I have the GI issues.

Another thought: I found that when I had issues with that, those could usually minimized if I ate one of the one minute flax muffins (found on the recipes forum) really helped. Now I'm usually okay without.

I took it before breakfast this morning and no issues yet. I think it might have been the steak I ate the other night. For some reason while I'm on Byetta I have a hard time tolerating red meat.
