Gastroparesis?
Hi folks. I'm new to LCF and have been diagnosed type 2 for four years, though it should be six years because I was misdiagnosed for 2 years, possibly longer
. Two years before being diagnosed, in 2003 I experienced a problem with severe vomiting several hours after eating that I put down to something I ate, the episodes continued very occasionally until 2007 when they got more often. So I go along to a different Dr and he reckoned I had IBS and prescribed Fybogel. I took it pretty irregularly and was still having episodes so put them down to that.A few days ago I was reading a thread on this board which mentioned gastroparesis (basically delayed stomach emptying) so I googled it and have 6 out of 11 symptoms. I think it is more likely I have this than IBS and I think my Mum has it too (she's also diabetic, 31 years). I need to tell my diabetes consultant which hopefully I'll get an appt for within the next month. The sites said smaller portions can help but as a food addict I will have great difficulty with this. Also I am eating far too many carbs and junk food so I am starting an Egg/protein fast tomorrow whilst trying to watch portion size. Does anyone else here have this condition? If so, how do you manage? I read the delayed emptying of the stomach causes blood sugar spikes. My consultant threatened to put me on insulin as my hba1c is 8.8 and the sites mention it as a treatment but i cannot stand the idea of injecting insulin as I watched my Mum do it all my life plus I don't want to pile even more weight on. I currently need to get 140lbs off. I keep thinking I can avoid it if I just eat lower carb and take my Metformin, 2,500mg a day. Sorry for rambling and thanks in advance for any replies. ![]() |

Lyn,
My (late) husband was diabetic and had gastroparesis. He was put on Reglan/Metroclopromide (spelling) for it. He had the hardest time eating in the beginning. He would eat very small meals. Please take very good care of yourself as diabetes is horrendous. |

Getting my blood sugar down has been a real life saver for me with this. The gastroparesis was one of the major things that drove me to going low-carb and following Dr. Bernstein's plan.
It started sort of suddenly with me. I mean, after having acid reflux symptoms for a while. I started waking up at 3 or 4 in the morning (after not having eaten anything for 8 hours) and vomiting violently... throwing up solid food. My bg's where mostly in the 150's to 170's when that was happening. But since getting my bg's down to the 80's & 90's--low carbing and taking a small dosage of metformin--those symptoms have gone away (knock on wood ) |
