Blood sugar question
I posted this in general health but thought maybe this was a better place to ask this. (sorry for the double post)
I had blood work done last week and my fasting blood sugar came back 106. (I have been on atkins since 1/5/09). I was informed that could mean pre-diabetic. I got a testing machine and some strips from my dad and started testing my my sugar every morning. Saturday was 93, Sunday was 97 and today was 104. Last night I ate dinner at 5:30 and tested at 7:30 and it read 103 which was good. My question is if I didn't eat anything after testing at 103 at 7:30 last night how or why is my number higher this morning??? Just trying to figure this all out... thanks! another thing I was wondering is if a person is in ketosis and burning body fat throughout the night is it truly a fasting blood sugar test in the morning or would you have to be out of ketosis for it to be accurate?

The liver can manufacture and squirt out glucose in a process called gluconeogenesis. This happens more in diabetics than normal people. That is what causes the dawn phenomenon, or morning rise in blood sugar. Whether you are in ketosis or not you are fasting. In fact, most people do enter a fat-burning or ketosis phase at some time during the night. So your fasting blood sugar test is valid whether you are in ketosis or not.
Keep up the good work so you don't ever get full-blown diabetes. Keep on testing now and then so it doesn't sneak up on you. |
