Anyone know what these Cholesterol numbers mean?

Just got my bloodwork done.
Doc called saying I need to go on "Crestor' and to watch my overall fat intake.

Any thoughts on this?

TOTAL cholesterol 280
HDL 51
LDL 171
TRIGLICERIDES 259

Generally you want your total cholesterol to be less than 200. LDL is your "bad" cholesterol and HDL is your "good" cholesterol. LDL should be less than 100 and HDL should be more than 60. Triglycerides should be about 150 or less. The ideal ranges can depend base on medical history such as heart disease or stroke.

Thanks so much Mad4Chillas. Im assuming these are not healthy numbers. Back to squeaky clean Atkins for me! This was an eye opener for sure.

No problem. There's always room for improvement. Just focus on getting good healthy fats in from nuts, olive oil, and seed oils. Also doing a Flaxseed or Fish Oil Supplement can definitely help bring those numbers back into a more normal range. I know for a lot of people following Atkins can improve their numbers (regardless of the saturated fat intake), there have been a lot of studies recently that have shown that its not so much the saturated fat intake that affects cholesterol & triglycerides but actually the carbohydrates in combination with these fats that can throw off the numbers. Thus limit your carbohydrate intake, focus on clean eating and healthy fats and your numbers should improve

Hopefully that helped!

You have to look at the back of the bottle, not the front. Look at the total amount of DHA + EPA per serving (you'll notice it's a LOT less than the amount on the front of the bottle), and whether the serving is one or two gelcaps. I take at least 300mg combined DHA/EPA per day, however that works out in the brand I'm taking at the time.

I'm a rare poster but I just happened to get my cholesterol numbers recently. The doc said the ratios mattered more than the numbers alone. Take your total cholesterol divide it by the HDL. The preferable ratio is under 5.0. Ideal is under 3.5. Next is theLDL/HDL. Preferable is under 5.0. Ideal is under 2.0. Then take your triglycerides/HDL. Preferable is under 4.0. Ideal is under 2.0.
HTH!

Just got my numbers back too!

Total chol. 328
Trigs. 56
HDL. 139
LDL 178

Even tho total is high and LDL is high my ratios seem to look great?

Chol div by HDL =2.4 (ideal under 3.5)
LDL div by HDL = 1.28 (ideal under 2.0)
Trigs div by HDL = .40 (?) (ideal under 2.0)

Does that look right? I do use a lot of coconut oil but have been hitting the processed carbs harder this past year (chips etc) and will def be giving all of that crap up!! Heart disease runs in my family.

Another question. I've tried fish oil twice and it makes me very nauseous. No matter with food or without and no matter the brand. Any recommendations?

Thanks a million!!

Regarding fish oil, here are some guidelines that I got from a super doctor that I have.

First, the fish oil has to be at least 50 percent Omega 3.

Second, you need to take enough fish oil to get at least 800 DHA and 960 EPA per day. Usually that means 3-4 capsules. Every brand is different.

Third, take it with 150 to 200 mg of CoEnzyme Q10 per day.

If you don't already take fish oil, you will need to work up to this amount gradually for the sake of your stomach. Enteric coated brands help with that too.

Taking this dramatically decreased my blood pressure. I'm not sure it had much effect on my cholesterol.
