LDL cholesterol gone craZy

Hi

I am an unmedicated diabetic and my fasting blood sugar is now around USA 85, uk reading is 4.7,

my previous hb1ac has always been 5.8 but this time I expect it will be close to 5.0 much better.

my plan is very lowcarb , and high fat, circa 20 carbs per day in total.

I am only about 10 pounds 4 kilo overweight max.

In the last 4 weeks I have lost 11 pounds circa 5 kilo on the very low carb high fat diet/ with ligh exercise too.

My aim is to lower my cholesterol without statins if possible, and to loose a few kilos, And reduce my Hb1ac.

The question is the big rise in LDL normal, or any ideas I can reflect on.????

Did I take the test too early ??

Has any one else experienced this.??

Has any one taken crestor or some statin for a while til this levels out hopefully,

Any one taking a statin while on a low carb high fat diet and why , did the low carb high fat not work ??

MY total cholesterol and HDL have gone "beserk" , but triglycerides have lowered.

Total Cholesterol: << this was taken two weeks ago it si only the third week into my very low carb high fat diet,#
9.8 mmol/L = 382.2 mg/dL

LDL Cholesterol:
7.6 mmol/L = 296.4 mg/dL ~ My ldl has basically doubled here ###

HDL Cholesterol:
1.46 mmol/L = 56.94 mg/dL slight improvement here

triglycerides:
1.54 mmol/L = 137.06 mg/dL big improvement here THEY HAVE NEVER BEEN SO LOW

Test taken on 29/07/2011 <<<< Before the very low carb high fat diet.

" THE UK & USA MEASUREMENTS ARE SHOWN side by side ".

Total Cholesterol:
5.8 mmol/L = 226.2 mg/dL

LDL Cholesterol:
3.4 mmol/L = 132.6 mg/dL

HDL Cholesterol:
1.37 mmol/L = 53.43 mg/dL

triglycerides:
2.25 mmol/L = 200.25 mg/dL

My LDL jumped 20 points due to consuming coconut oil. I look forward to my next test as I dropped the oil just too see.

It is common for the LDL to raise regardless. Here is why: The LDL is a particle size. Small (bad) and large & fluffy (good) - It is very possible your LDL is the good kind. In a nutshell, low carbing creates LARGE FLUFFY LDL. And more & more, total cholesterol numbers don't matter...its the ratios of HDL/LDL, etc.

The only way to find out is the test called the VAP test or the NMR. They both get down to the nitty gritty and tell you what SIZE your LDL is.

Somewhere around here are links & info on how to determine your ratios as follows:

trigs/hdl ratio, Total cholesterol & HDL, LDL/HDL ratio.

If I can confirm & figure it out, I will post for you.

Welcome to LCF

Oh & yes...maybe too early.

A wonderful blog to learn so much is heartscanblog - Dr William Davis. (he also has a forum you have to pay to get very specific details but I thought it was worth it! I learned a lot from the group) - Just google him.

He says to wait 6 to 9 months.

And as far as statins go, I would get the VAP test first & allow you some time. Just my 2 cents. You could also look into a high quality fish oil, check your Vit D level and look into Slow Rush Niacin. (Read Dr William Davis blog. Seriously

I think it's too early to have the test. A good wait time is about 6 months after beginning LC. The LDL normally rises when first beginning LC but should begin to go back down after a while.

Also, as Stevie said, you probably had the wrong (incomplete) test.

The normal lipid test checks HDL, LDL, Triglycerides, and total cholesterol. The VAP test is much more complicated. It checks for 2 types of HDL and 3 or 4 types of LDL. It will also check for a diabetes tendency, and heart attack risk.

In the standard lipid test, the LDL is obtained by some formula, not a direct measurement. Basically, as triglycerides go down, LDL rises.
The more complete VAP test is a direct measurement of all aspects of the test.

Wait another 3-6 months before having another test. Then have the VAP test if possible.

This is certainly worth a read

I came across this

This is certainly worth a read

Dr. Davis has a theory about why your labs may look this way.

he mentions 2 months to settle down but i have heard of cases where it took from 6 months to 1 year , I think it depends on how rapidly one is losing weigh , it appears that during fast weight loss the choleserol goes a bit out of "whack"..when the fast weight loss settles , the cholesterol does too a couple of months after.

Anyone taking Nacin to lower their cholesterol, and which one,?
How fast did it work , dose?
Did fish oil help any one with cholesterol ?

Goodluck
