Slo-Niacin and Betaine Hydrochloride

I started taking slo-niacin about 5 days ago. No problem and no flushing. I'm sitting here now with my arms itching, my face burning, and my lips getting numb. Why?

I think because I took the slo-niacin and betaine hydrocloride at the same time. Betaine HCL (hydrochloride) is a hydrochloric acid containing supplement. So I'm thinking the acid ate right through the layers of the slo-niacin capsule and released it all at once. I wonder if apple cider vinegar might do the same thing?

It took about 20 for the flushing to start and after 10 minutes, it is greatly diminished. Just wanted to try to spare somebody else from going through this. Don't consume a strong acid at the same time as slo-niacin.

I'm all in favor of niacin, but I wouldn't be inclined to take the slow-release kind. That's the kind that has been associated with liver damage--in a few cases, severe liver damage. So I'm happy to live through the flush, which I've begun to enjoy.

Betaine is a good supplement to take with niacin--though I might stagger them. Since it's a methyl donor, it may help protect the liver. I've been considering adding betaine to my daily intake.

But Slo-Niacin? No thanks, none for me!

The probably is low enough that I'm willing to risk it if it lowers my cholesterol without statins.

I think so as well. From what I read, anything under 1000 is ok without a liver test. I have had mine checked anyway periodically and liver is just fine. I take 1000 of Slo Niacin. I think eventually however, I will start to work up to IR niacin as yes, it is better for the liver and its cheaper in the long run.

I should probably look this up, but I thought it was the no-flush niacin that caused problems rather than the slow release but I could have an error of memory.
