isn't it? and I gotta tell you Betty, that until about 6 months ago, I STILL would have believed alot of this junk even though I was working low-carb and it was working for me. It's been about the last 6 months of feeling fantastic and doing ALOT of reading, that I realize just how false and downright untruthful this stuff is. Hasn't the Farmingham Study disproven the relationship between heart disease and cholesterol? and yet, they're still saying it's proven....

For newbies still unable to decypher healthy cholesterol information, it really is about the triglycerids as well, the particle size of your LDL cholesterol. One can have elevated LDL but if the particle size is large and fluffy, your heart disease risk is much lower and actually, you are protected.

Ann Louise Gittleman actually recommends 2 eggs daily to protect the liver from having to compensate by making more cholesterol.......

yes, but unfortunately, the flawed science in the war against saturated fat led by Ancel Keys has been repeated over and over and over until accepted as fact. Just another example that you simply CANNOT take someone's word for anything .. but instead, do your OWN research and be your OWN health advocate ... nothing against doctors or scientists, but....before I agree to take a drug, I better have undisputed evidence of its validity !!!!

I'm glad you mentioned that, Fawn. What people fail to remember is, if you cut back on dietary cholesterol, your body (specifically the liver) will make more to compensate for it. Dietary cholesterol has VERY LITTLE impact on blood serum cholesterol levels. 80-85% of the cholesterol in the body (a very NECESSARY component for good health, by the way) is produced by the liver.

I had my car towed the other day and the driver, a really nice guy of 47, told me he has already had three heart attacks and that every day with his kids is a gift.

He was optimistic, though, because he said he's finally 'got with the program' diet-wise. Low fat, no butter or oil, small portions of meat and especially no red meat, low sodium. And a ton of statins, blood thinners and other meds.

It breaks my heart how cavalier these "experts" are with people's very lives.

it breaks my heart too. These are peoples' LIVES they're fooling with. And I know that doctors don't have alot of time and training in nutrition, but I think it's about high-time that they TAKE the time because unless they haven't noticed, there is a trend happening here folks. The old way isn't working. People are consuming less fat and getting sicker and sicker. OH , it makes me so angry as well.

Overheard my coworker that had triple-bypass in March saying that she needs her 3 pieces of whole wheat bread everyday, ....she's ALWAYS loved bread... and I wanted so bad to say, "yeah, and see where it got you?"... but I'm sure her doctor has convinced her that she hasn't cut out ENOUGH fat ..

How sad! Those children likely will be robbed of their wonderful, caring father who is trying so diligently to be there for them. It brings to mind Tim Russert, a tragic, needless loss of a wonderful person following ignorantly given "advice" from wrongly respected sources.

It's so frustrating to hear stories like these. At my health club several weeks ago, I over heard a gal talking about her heart issues and consequently, her diet. Not only does the dietician have her on a low fat lifestyle with very little animal protein, they also restrict her intake of vitamin k foods due to the coumadin (blood thinners). What did I hear her dinner was going to be??? Whole wheat pasta with marinara, my thoughts, the very thing that contributes to the disease.

Well, fawn, I really like your signature: organic, seasonal, and local. As for the second part, I am wondering when that will happen...

As for the thread, we have the same misleading information here in Belgium...

I hear you Patrick! As long as the drug reps are educating our physicians, it will be a very long time before integrative medicine rules over conventional western.

Welcome by the way!

Yes, thanks for posting! Alot of folks don't realize that the liver is very good at making its own cholesterol.

I wish more doctors would order lipid profile tests. I usually order my own tests, pay the fee, and get my own results. I then take my results to my doctor for my annual visits.

Isn't it interesting Tana that Dr's don't even make or mention the fact that when you reduce dietary cholesterol the liver makes more and when you include more, the liver makes less. DUH right?

What is a lipid profile test? I googled it and it looks like it's the same one the doctor gives me. The usual good and bad cholesterol and lipid count. Is the profile test you mention different?
