New numbers, old issues.

I promised in the past to keep posting my lipid numbers. First are raw numbers, then, using fuzzy math, I converted them to what American eyes are more use to. This comes from my March 3/09 test while I was on 10mg of Zocor. One other things of note, I go through around 60 eggs per week, and have been since the end of summer last year (I find them tasty and don't really want to give them up for egg whites. But we'll see.)

Cholesterol Fasting...7.0...270
Triglycerides.........0.43...38
HDL...................2.7...104
LDL...................4.1...158
Cholesterol/HDL Ratio 2.6

This was my Dec 29/08 test where I wasn't on Zocor.

Cholesterol Fasting...6.9...266
Triglycerides.........0.48...42
HDL...................2.3....88
LDL...................4.4...170
Cholesterol/HDL Ratio 3.0

Overall, I think my numbers are great, but my doctor. who continues to follow the guidelines put out by the Canadian diabetes group, isn't so sure.

On a side note, I had to laugh when he tried to convince me that I'm at risk of some kind of heart infraction in the next ten years. So he pulled out some program that number crunched the Farmington numbers. I'm well aware of where I stand on their charts, but he didn't know that. So he punched my stats in and came up with zero risk. I asked him again to take me off the Zocor, but because my ldl was still over 3, the guidelines state that I should be one some kind of statin. Argh...I'm still working to change this mind.

That was my doctors' knee-jerk reaction to my lipid numbers. I don't really want to go that route as I include eggs in almost every meal in the form of hard boiled eggs. Frankly, he just forgot what we had discussed back in December after my then, last test. The reason I'm pretty sure it isn't the eggs causing my LDL and TC to rise is that it jumped between May and August of last year, a full month before I started eating eggs. Before that, I rarely had one.

Something happened between May and August of last year that took my LDL from 1.7 to 5.0 (65 to 193) and I don't have a clue what it is. This was six months after I started LCing, so it wasn't the early spike Dr. Atkins wrote about in 2002. I privately contact some long term LCers and asked them if they ever heard of this or experienced it themselves. Most said they never heard or had a spike in all the time they were LCing. A couple though said that the numbers can go up and down. And of course, everyone told me not to worry about it. I do have to worry about it as I live north of the 49th, and finding a new doctor, and one that doesn't hold the same view on this, isn't that easy. Besides, my current one is pretty good with other aspects of my healthcare and was the one to recommend the Atkins diet in the first place.

I think we talked about this, but perhaps...the LDL is the fluffy kind? Did you get the VAP? Refresh my memory.

And you are tasking supplements, right?

I know it is so hard to find a good doc. I am glad he recommended Atkins. Thats a rare find!

I offered to have the test done, but my doctor told me to 'save my money' as it won't change his opinion. This really doesn't surprise me as I think he's covering his butt by following the "Canadian Diabetes Association 2008 Clinical Practice Guidelines" paper and has a cardiologist backing up the dogma.

As for supplements, I'm taking 2g of Niacin (the flushing type...if I even notice it.) 1g of vitamin D3, 1g of fish oil a multi-vitamin for anything I might miss.
