Please take my advice and find a new doctor! Never in my life have I heard of anyone being put on Cholesterol lowering medication with a ratio of 5:1! Anything below 3.5:1 is considered optimal. Anything over 5:1 is high. Your Husband is exactly 5:1 which by all medical definitions is within the range of acceptable, but worth letting you know you need to make a few diet/exercise changes (very little). With an overall of 210 there is no need for alarm and there's no justification for meds. If you have not read the news lately let me update you on the latest statistics. It's been scientifically documented that people taking cholesterol meds don't live any longer than people who choose not to. There's no evidence that supports these drugs improving your health.

In fact, I have a friend at work who had numbers 3 months ago slightly worse than your husband's. He has a terrible diet and he let it be known that he can't and will not diet. I asked him to try 3 things that are fairly easy to do. I asked him to eat breakfast even if it meant stopping at the drive through on the way to work. Get at least 7.5hrs of sleep during the week and 8.5hrs on the weekend (he said he was already doing that). Finally, eat less supper and eat it at least 3 hrs (preferably 4hrs) before going to bed. He did this and in 4 weeks his overall dropped to 180 and his HDL came up to 48 which gave him a near perfect 3.75 ratio. He also lost 7 lbs over the next 8 weeks without eating fewer calories or exercising.

Go find another doctor. This guy/gal is obviously getting perks from the maker of the meds he/she is prescribing. Seriously, 10 years ago 210 was considered normal. Worse, most of the time, cholesterol meds lower the HDL and not so much the LDL which makes the ratio even worse.

I'm a believer in fish oil supplements for cholesterol. I think it raises HDL as well as lowering LDL. I eat a lot of fish and still take the supplements, and I think it helps.

Fish definitely helps me. I loose 50-150% more weight when I eat two meals or more of fish per week. Salmon seams to have the best effect on weight loss and cholesterol lowering for me which supports the omega-3 theory.

However, fish oil supplements have no effect on my health. They don't lower my cholesterol and they don't help me lose weight.

As Chantel said, definitely no wheat.

As a matter of fact, biopsies of mummies uncovered from the Roman Empire show that Insulin Resistance was the disease that killed the greatest number of people. Wheat was their staple crop. They carried bread in their bags for long journeys across the desert. We know enough now about insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes that there are physical abnormalities that develop later in life as a result of insulin resistance. These abnormalities were seen in mummies that were examined. Wheat (and insulin resistance) is believed to have been one of the factors that brought down the Roman Empire.

If anything, wheat should be viewed as a supplement. This is a nutritional supplement that should only be taken as a meal replacement. Never should wheat be taken/eaten with protein or fat. That is detrimental. Spiking your insulin with wheat/carbs while consuming protein/fat equals long term health problems. The SUPER carbs such as wheat should be eaten by themselves if they have to be eaten and they should be used only in emergency situations or situations requiring extreme amounts of energy very quickly like riding a mountain bike through rough terrain for 2 straight hours.

I was taking 1 of the adult aspirins a day and that was too much. My blood was so thin that I would bleed all day from a paper cut. My dad has his own blood thinner testing machine. He bought it so he could adjust his own Cumin (I think that's how you spell it). He's on blood thinner...... I played with my diet and found that eating turnip greens 3 times a week had the same effect as taking an aspirin every day.

I confirmed through one of my doctor friends that turnip greens do thin your blood. They tell you not to eat greens once you start taking blood thinner so they can regulate the thinner.

It's the turnip greens that thin the blood, not the bulb that grows underground...I never had the greens till we moved south, but man I have to tell ya, I love em! Ya just have to be so careful if you are on a blood thinner!

There is a correct way and an incorrect way to cook the greens. So, if you've never done it seek advice from a pro before you do. They can make you sick if you don't cook them right. It's mainly the stems. Some people just remove the stem completely (lots of work). Some people remove the biggest part of the stem and then boil/rinse and reboil. The boil/rinse cycle removes most of the toxins.

I know they look nasty, but try them with a little bacon grease and or ham in the pot while they are cooking. Drain them well and serve with your favorite meat. A little jalapeņo or green chili pepper sauce poured over the greens will really enhance the flavor without making them hot.

I was taking digestive enzymes last year. I got my blood drawn and I did not clot right away and the nurse asked me if I took a blood thinner and I said no and had no idea why. When I got home I read that digestive enzymes, or I should say one of them, I forget which one, can indeed thin your blood.
I don't know if this helps anyone. I just thought that it was interesting that turnip greens can do that a;so.

No wheat products; does that mean no grains of any type?

Cool Ann. He is not perfect but he is one of the most sound. I am an official groupy.

Sleepy,
no -no wheat products. No corn products. That stuff is worse then sugar. Also no high fructose corn syrup. Bad stuff.

If you want grains..consider steel cut oats if you can handle it. Some cannot - some it triggers more hunger.

And pls dont believe the American Heart Association..like the food pyramid, they are so off the mark. Cheerios is not your friend.

To lower LD....
Fish oil, niacin, vit D, exercise, low carb diet.

And if and when you are ready..red wine, dark chocolate.

Also..raw nuts. About a handful a day. Prefer almonds but I use a mix of raw nuts.

Again..no expert..I just like what heartscanblog offers as far as advise.

Be your own advocate. Prescribing a med on such a low LD just makes me mad. Sounds like my husbands doctor. Pretty soon these docs are going to add meds to the water supply!

PS: If your hubby cannot tolerate Atkins...consider South Beach or even a Paelo Diet
