The 4th of July Challenge

Come join us on the 4th of July Challenge through July 4, 2014. Think of the amazing things we can accomplish in 8 weeks!!! The rules are: No Rules! Feel free to join during any stage of this challenge!!

Pick your own personal challenge based on whatever is important to you! and come report in whenever it suits you. Some will have a specific weight loss as a goal and some of us will have goals based only on desirable behaviors. We are all at a different place on this journey A goal could be as simple as coming in to post .. Think outside the box. What do **you** need to keep you going?

Happy Sunday!

I am starting atkins for the 2nd time. Things get so hectic with work and kids school and sporting events its hard to stay on track. So this time i need to make my health a priority!

My goal for the challenge for the next 8 weeks is to stick to the low carb program and be more active!

I was under the weather last week with the lack of sleep, depression got worse, so I talked with both the PCP doctor & the shrink. We agreed I should taked my sleep med for awhile until the sleep patterns are regulated, then I will come off them again. So I have had 4 nights of sleep & feel a little better. I need to get a non drowsy something for post nasal drip due to constant dry cough that I don't recall having before. Must be springtime allergies. Something new. I hate having to take drugs.

So the thing currently keeping me out of work are the stamina, dizziness, headaches & emotional depression from the brain injury. I have to be patient. The doc said walking is the best medicine. Out patient therapy will begin this week or next and walking I can do on my own with my walker in my neighborhood. I can't drive until Sept. I used to walk 10,000 steps a day last summer and fall, so I am going to record my daily steps in this challenge as well as commit to doing my upper body exercises and leg exercises given to me by my PT until I am given new ones. I am hopeful.

Mary - glad you're sleeping better. Recovering from a serious injury/accident/illness is such a long road, sounds like you are on the right track ..hang in there ! As for allergies, this year is the worst it's been in a long time. Allegra 60mg works for me

Goals for me this time around:

Walk every day, even if all I can handle are laps around the living room
Stick to the food plan
Hit 220
Spend at least 30 minutes with the guitar and drums
Check in here EVERY day for accountability

I'm going to shoot for 10lbs. in this challenge.
It will be interesting since my pattern so far is to lose a couple of lbs and then be flat for 2-3 weeks.

I'm in but my plan is to have my goals for each month of the challenge. My conference was amazing. So many great speakers. Long days.

Oh and I was quite sure that I was finished menopause and I've started bleeding again. Sheesh!

May goals:

1. Post daily (unless I am away from my computer, like next Monday and Tuesday).
2. On plan eating.
3. 110,000 steps.
4. 1 Mile Walking Tape ~ 22 times.
5. Drink more water.
6. Lose 2 pounds.

Mary ~ Thanks for starting the thread. I'm glad you decided to get some help with sleeping. I've always heard that sleeping is so important for healing.

First challenge day yesterday went well.. I walked, stayed on plan, played some music - ouch, need to build up those finger calluses again

Yesterday, I walked 6284 steps, down to end of my street twice. Did some cleaning, stayed on plan. Need to focus on drinking more water.

My plan will be to THINK before I put any food in my mouth! Sound choices will produce weight loss. It worked today - I ate none of the doughnuts in the break room and felt invincible!

Hi all ... so far today I have walked, planned out food for the day, and am checking in - music "therapy" to follow !

Mary - way to go !!! What are you using to track your steps, a pedometer or an app on your phone ? I think I want to try that

Amylynn - love the idea of one new meal per week, I tend to cook the same stuff over and over

Bronwyn - I had to chuckle over your donut comment !

Cindy - congrats on an early - no meetings - evening... hope you managed all the water you planned on ... my day out was good but tiring. I just have to be patient and not push myself too hard

JoanneO - food will make me feel superhuman when I'm good and the lowest of the low when I'm bad. Food should not control me that way but it does.

We cleaned out the leftovers in the refrigerator at lunch today and DH split them with me 50-50. The mashed potatoes got me but only had about 1/2 cup or so.

Yesterday, I walked over 7,000 steps including 2 trips to the end of my street. I did the upper body exercises just 12 reps with 1 lb weights. I am starting at the bottom. My legs are weak. And I did 10 reps on the leg exercises. Packed up two more bags of books to give away. I drank 64 oz water. I haven't had 64 oz in a while. Stuck to 3 meals yesterday. No sugar or grains and no snacks except cought drops (if they count). Had a salad at lunch. One of my goals is to have a salad or bowl of raw veggies with lunch.

I wear a watch (Smart Health Walking Fit) that counts steps and measures heart rate that I bought in Rite Aid, our local pharmacy. It's handy and easy to use. I am sure you can buy it online too. It is not computerized or anything. I need something I can just put on and forget about each day. It tells the time too.

Way to go Mary! Watch sounds interesting. Have a FitBit but it has started acting crazy!
Been babysitting and going to bed super early. Have to so I can keep up with my little 1 year old grandson!
Sounds like everyone is doing well. My problem is always portion control. I'm working on it!

Cindy and Cloud9 - portion control is tough for me too, I have tried using smaller plates and bowls and that helps a little

Bronwyn - love that statement, and so true. When I eat clean, I feel like I could conquer the world

Mary - thanks for the name of the watch.. I have a Rite Aid nearby, I will check it out.... and KUDO's on keeping up with all the excersize !!

Cloud - I had looked at the Fitbit, some of my friends have it, but they also said they were having some issues with it .. I hope you get it figured out

Tomorrow there's a memorial breakfast for a friend who passed away in a motorcycle accident a few years ago. We're hosting an out-of-towner who's riding in tonight.

Wenesday I did good with the walking and yesterday too but today it is raining and colder. Don't feel like going out. I am not feeling up to par. I guess it will be my day of rest.

Sticking to my 3 meals a day. It helps to write the plan down the night before because yhen I know if I have everything I need in the house that I need to fix it. Planning on cooking some salmon either later today or tomorrow. I like it for breakfast with melon. Odd, huh?

Off to take a nappy!

Yea, I think the FitBit has Bit the dust. It was given to me by a lady who used to post and past it along when she got a new one. She disappeared from the boards and no one has heard from her as far as I know. She had lost a tremendous amount of weight and was almost at goal. Very upsetting for me. She mailed it to me and wouldn't even let me pay the postage. Wanted me to pay it forward.

Wow, MaryMary!! Good on you! You're really dealing well with some pretty serious challenges! I wish you good health and continued success.

What a great thread.

Let's see. That's about 8 weeks from now.
I guess I will be very pleased if I lose 10 pounds.
But weight loss is important to me because of how it will make me healthier in other ways.
I don't know when I will next get my blood tested, but I hope it will show a drop in blood sugar.
And I'd also be happy to see my blood pressure continue to improve.
Don't know what I can hope for in the way of kidney function, but it would be great if my numbers go up, that's for sure.

Good luck on meeting your goals, Everybody!

Welcome Okmnx, where are you from? And what food plam are you following? Or have you decided?

Cleaned out the medicine cabinet today and threw out lots of old bottles of outdated pills. It felt good to get current.

Tomorrow I am tacking the spice cabinet. What's the point of keeping stuff I haven't touched in years? Even if it was a wedding present? I will ask my kids if they want it and if they don't, off to Goodwill to goes. I don't have the patience for yard sales.

Welcome Okmnx!! I'm trying for 10lbs also. I too have kidney disease. Third Stage renal failure. I am doing LC but eating more veggies than some because of kidneys. My blood pressure has improved greatly. I have been taken off 2 of 3 medications. I have also been taken off triglyceride medicine. So, I wish you well. It can be done. By the way, my kidney numbers have been stable if not a little better.
