Stress. What am I gonna do with it? Worried about son who lives with me, and his wife who is manic depressive. I think his worries about her have cause him to gain back all the weight that he lost . Had a sick dog keep me up half the night. He finally settled down about 2am. Hubby is dealing with some new found blood pressure issues. Doctor yesterday gave him some meds and told him to come back today. This morning, checked his BP and it was worse than the night before! 188/101. ugh.

Tell me not to worry. I tell myself not to worry. It wont change anything. It won't control the outcome of anything.

MMMM have another cookie. Yep. That's better **sigh**

Terri~ Sending big hugs and healing vibes to you and your family I grew up with a bipolar mother--it was excruciating. I'm not trying to be a bossypants or nosy, but has DS gone to therapy on his own? I truly wish that we'd have been sent as kids to learn how to deal and cope with my mother's mental illness. I'm convinced that I would not have had nearly the amount of hang-ups about weight & self worth as I do, had I been allowed to go! The people that have to deal on a day-to-day basis are always greatly affected too, so I really feel for him! Hoping things get fixed up for DH!! Hang in there honey, we love you!

Terri, I'm so sorry to hear of your worries Low carb usually always helps with BP...husband willing to try to change diet even a little? Even 50-75 grams helps. Hope your doggie baby is ok. Brighter days for all of you are ahead (hugs)

While I'm doing well with eating, this is Pre Mens week and I always gain. So, staying the same is good I guess.

Schools shut down today. -13 this morning. This has been a long winter so far. Spring is just 2 months away. On the bright side. The sun is beaming today and not a cloud in the beautiful blue sky. Have to wear sunglasses in the house cause the sun and white snow is so dang bright!!

Mental illness is so sad. I grew up with a schizophrenic brother. It can be very difficult for adults and also very confusing for children to have to deal with this sort of thing.

There is a National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) all over US. Support groups can be found locally. Even going one time can help. When someone is mentally ill they need an adult who can be an advocate for them because they usually don't have the ability for this type of self care... and they are dealing with too much. So when they have children...the entire family is affected and needs help. This subject hits home with me. (hugs Danielle too)

You seem to already know what to do with the stress. The key is to do what you know you should, but it's hard. One of the major problems with a bi-polar patient is that they stop taking their meds because they don't like the way the meds make them feel. Do you know if she is taking her meds like she's suppose to?

As for you hubby's BP. I can't imagine a doctor giving him meds for the 1st time yesterday and telling him to come back today. That's awfully quick. Meds don't work that fast. As far as his BP being higher this morning than it was the night before....at least part of that is because it was taken at a different time of day (that can make a difference). Add to that the fact that he is undoubtedly concerned about this and that will raise it.

I have what they call "white coat syndrome." Every time they take my BP at the doc's office, it is higher than it is at home. I can understand this happening to someone who is intimidated by the doc or the process....but that's NOT me. I have been going to the same doc since he was a resident and he's 61 years old now. He's more like a younger brother. Our relationship is not typical and yet my BP is always up when they take it....and I am on BP meds.

Another thing that can skew the reading is taking it right after movement. To get a truer reading, one should sit still & relax for a few minutes and then take it. Also, DON'T worry about what the number is going to be. That can raise it temporarily too. So...both of you need to concentrate on relaxing. I know....easier said than done. Deep breathing....in through the nose....out through the mouth can help too.

Here's a website that has some good info on relaxation & deep breathing.

Stress Management: Breathing Exercises for Relaxation - Lungs and Airways

P.S. I agree with the others who said some therapy for you and your son might be helpful. I'd be surprised if it wasn't.

OMG y'all, I'm officially overwhelmed by your responses! Thank you!

My biggest issue is that DS doesn't talk much. I have to PULL information out of him. And when his wife is home and he's at work, she pretty much stays in her room. She's a self proclaimed "nervous recluse".

I raised a bipolar child that I adopted. Part of the problem is they do not want to admit they have a problem. If you are able to get them help and medication, once they fell better they do not want to take it because they think they are okay again. It is very hard. It got to a point that my son could not live with us anymore, my husband has Parkinson's disease at 55 years old and my son was too hard to take care as well as my husband. I worry about him but I had to choose that my husband's health was more important. I know its hard. You can only live one day at a time. I can feel for you and pray for you to have strength. I never prayed for it to go away, I only asked for strength to handle what God had given me to handle.

When someone is mentally ill they need an adult who can be an advocate for them because they usually don't have the ability for this type of self care... and they are dealing with too much. So when they have children...the entire family is affected and needs help. This subject hits home with me. (hugs Danielle too)
NAMI also has family to family educational course that a lot of the families of the resident's I work with have found helpful over the years.

Terri I am so sorry for the stress you are going through. I like a few others here also have dealt with mental illness in my family. Like Danielle, I wish as children we had gone through therapy so we as a family could have learned techniques to cope with our situation and heal.

I feel the love, y'all thank you! Today is better. I talked to my son last night because I asked if I could talk to him. He obliged. We didn't talk long, and I said I wished I had written a list of questions to ask him. He seemed okay. He seemed to have a game plan in place. He might very well be blowing smoke up my hiney just to make me feel better, but he succeeded in that. I have to put some trust in him. He seems to want to carry the responsibility. I'm here to pick him up if it all goes awry.

This is obviously a huge topic in many peoples lives. Thank goodness we can talk about it without judgements. Love you guys!

So, When is spring gonna get here?? HUH?

Bringing it out and talking about it is the best thing as far as I'm concerned. Pretending it will go away or it doesn't exist is a big mistake...one my parents made.
I realize this is a different person and different illness...just sharing my experience.
Thank you for being a wonderful, supportive, open, helpful mother and mother in law. Feeling support can make all the difference in the world for those affected.
Thanks everyone for sharing and showing support to Terri.

I don't feel like weighing today. I'm doing well on my food plan but am ready to start my monthly.

Have a good day everyone.

...Queen. Just post the date and your weight each day. On a new day, you can use the quote button at the bottom
of your last post to copy and paste that to a new one. I hope that's what you meant. I don't know if you are familiar with how this
site works or not.
