I just took a stroll through the neighborhood -- it's nice and windy today, which I love. I have to tip my hat to the ladies who go out jogging with those GIGANTIC strollers -- the ones with tires that look like they should be on a BMX bike. Those ladies look like they're moving kind of slowly, because of the strollers, but they all jammed past me like super fast. It was honestly quite impressive.

I tip my hat to the strength and stamina of everybody who is out there getting their pump on!

Back when I ran 5Ks, I was always amazed by how many strollers there were at the starting line. Lots of people ran whole races that way without ever slowing down to a walk.

(Elliptical yesterday and today, setting 14. No Judge Judy; lots of Paula Dean, though.)

Another STRONG week, Bianca! Do you have big plans for the holiday weekend? Any cycling or outdoorsy stuff?

I've got nothing exciting this weekend. Just family. But I'm looking forward to the return of steak grilling season! I've actually eaten very little meat since the holidays. I've mostly just eaten seafood because I prefer meat when it's cooked on the grill. I even bought one of those grill racks for the oven but it's not as good, to my tastebuds, as cooking over charcoal. Next month are the Puerto Rican parties in Chicago, so my cousins will cook a pig in a pit -- which is THE BEST!

Thirty minutes on the elliptical yesterday and today. No Judge Judy; Saturday morning TV will make you despair for humanity.

I'm hoping to do some biking if the weather's nice - it's too humid this morning, though.

Pig in a pit? Party food AND low carb? Is that even allowed? Chicago has the best food in the US, if you ask me.

Last year a friend roasted a whole pig in the back yard, and I took a small serving because I was just that indoctrinated in the whole "fat=bad" conventional wisdom. Maybe we'll get lucky and he'll do it again this year?

I hope he roasts another one this year! Because you absolutely MUST taste the skin of a pit-roasted pig. It is like nothing else on Earth. It's succulent and a bit *pork sweet* and it has a uniquely sensual texture. It's truly wonderful.

Surprisingly, a lot of Caribbean food is low-carb if you just don't eat the accompanying rice and/or root vegetables. We don't traditionally eat a lot of bread or a lot of sweets (although the "convenience food culture" has somewhat changed the traditional meal patterns). We typically stew or roast different meats in a seasoning called "sofrito," which is (basically) pork fat seasoned with herbs. A "main dish" is like meat or chicken or fish, then we add peas and/or rice and/or root veggies like potato or yautia. But it's pretty easy to just *not* add the extra starch.

People who grew up poor or urban in Puerto Rico couldn't afford much meat so they make "arroz guisados" in which they stew rice and other starches with meat, to stretch small quantities of meat into full meals. Some guisados contain rice AND peas AND beans AND potatoes AND yautia (similar to potatoes). And when they just have the skin, but not the pork meat, people use the skin as a "breading" around a type of pulped banana. But country people, like my family, cook the meat separately.

One of my close friends is Mexicana and she asked me about my diet when I saw her on Easter. I always think that we're culturally very similar, because of Spanish. But while talking to her about Atkins, I realized that Mexican food is VERY starch-based, unlike Puerto Rican food. I didn't have too much of a culture shock when I started Atkins because I grew up eating Puerto Rican food. But I was talking to my friend and she was, like, unable to comprehend ways to cook and function without starches. She was, like, "Corn can't have TOO MANY carbs, right? Corn is a vegetable. Can I do Atkins but add corn?"

Hey there

I'm been MIA because we were camping where we had no Internet service. It was nice to get away from society and all of its trappings.

Trilex, I grill meat year round. It can be freezing cold out, and I will be running out to turn my meat. I'm sure the neighbors think I'm crazy but I don't are. It's my favorite way to fix all of my meat.

I only managed to get two days of exercise in last week. This week is shaping up to be much better.

We definitely missed you while you were away! Fortunately, Bianca and I have huge muscles so we've been able to hold down the fort while you were away. Welcome back!

I gotta train so I can wear a superhero costume to GenCon! Or a supervillain costume, more likely ...

While so far I haven't been able to schedule with my friend the aspiring bodybuilder, I did get my husband to read a well-respected book on so we can check each others' form. We are starting off this weekend!

(Also, elliptical trainer at the gym, thirty minutes, setting 14!)

For Halloween this year, I want to go as Alisha from Misfits! I normally try to come up with an excuse to wear a corset -- barmaid, medieval wench, and I've even done a modified Adam Ant with a corset and poet shirt (which was just as dumb as it sounds). But I think I could pull off Alisha now that I've lost a few pounds! If I can lose enough fat to actually show some muscle definition, I could live my dream of becoming -- um, dressing as -- Ororo (Storm) from X-Men. I've wanted to be Storm since I was, like, 7 years old. But I always just ended up doing a bargain basement Scary Spice because my mom owned what I now realize is a shocking amount of leopard print.

What form manual are you working from? Just curious! I haven't read too much on form. I've read Stuart McRobert and, of course, Ahh-nold. But that's about all...

I think it does count! Because I walked into town this morning before my workout -- I don't work out on Saturdays and Sundays so I've had two rest days -- but my hamstrings and glutes felt WORKED before I even got to the gym. I wasn't even walking fast but those muscles still got a bit of training.

And then we'll totally see you at GenCon, right?

The book is Starting Strength by Rippetoe and Kelly - while it's written for athletes and coaches, it isn't sport-specific, and its focus is on doing effective exercises correctly. I'm pretty taken with it.

I didn't post about the gym yesterday, but it was the same as today! Thirty minutes on the elliptical, setting 14!

I've been doing some biking, and I think I've found a good route to the grocery store that'll keep me off the more alarming roads. The catch is that I couldn't find my old padlock. So tomorrow it looks like I'll be getting a new one. I won't gripe about biking to the store, but if I came out and found my bike gone, this would be me:

I just bought Starting Strength on my Kindle! I want to learn more and this book has 196 5-star reviews and only a single 1-star.

I practically LIVED in the Marvel Universe before college! But I've fallen out of touch since then. When I'm at my parents' house, I usually end up re-reading the old X-Men Dark Phoenix Saga and the Xtinction Agenda. But I have no idea what's going on these days! Although I would still love to command the winds. And I still *feel* like I am a Kenyan princess who was secretly given to a *normal* family at birth to protect me from assassins...

I would totally go to a convention! I just don't feel like I know enough about any show to count as a *superfan*. My knowledge of the things I follow is a mile wide and an inch deep...

You could rock Storm, Trillex!!

Well, I have an injury. Mt foot has been hurting for a while now, and I have just tried to ignore it. I ended up coming down really hard on it and I really thought I tore my Achilles' tendon. Turns out I have a rare deformity in my heel and I just exacerbated it when I came down on it. They gave me steroids and told me to elevate and ice it and see a podiatrist. I can barely walk! Ugh.now I'm wide awake with severe pain in my legs. Don't know what that's all about unless it has something to do with the steroid shot.

Oh! I'm so sorry to hear about your injury -- and especially about the severe pain! Ugh! I hope you can see the podiatrist SOON and get that resolved. Or at least get some pain relief!

HUGS!

I don't want to hijack another thread, so I've come here to tell Bianca that YOU actually know more than I do about weight training -- I've just started reading the book you recommended and it is FULL OF INFO!

I know a lot of bodybuilders so I know a good amount about *what* they do, so I love that this book explains *why*. For example, the issue with center of gravity. I've always just done what I'm told, with regard to form, but I'm really enjoying learning about *why* good form is good form. Thanks for telling us about the book!

Can I ask what the book is called? Very interested in learning more about weight training. I tried to do cardio last night, but my foot is still hurting so I just stuck to weights. Can't see the podiatrist until June 17.

Really? You have to wait THREE WEEKS to see the podiatrist, even though you're currently in pain?! That's ridiculous! I can understand that specialists are probably super busy, but it seems like they could at least *triage* the situation with a quick, preliminary visit to put you on a basic rehab path, with appropriate pain relief, before the more comprehensive visit in THREE WEEKS. Geez!

I hate to be critical about an industry that I'm essentially pretty ignorant about but I genuinely feel that if any other type of business was run the way that the healthcare industry is run, it would completely collapse in less than a year. Just sayin!

The book I bought is called Starting Strength Basic Barbell Training, Third Edition, by Mark Rippetoe (with Stef Bradford). I think I may have gotten a different edition, or maybe a different version of the title, since Bianca mentioned "Rippetoe and Kelly" as the co-authors. But the one I have is still super interesting! I just bought the version that is available on Kindle.

HAPPY WEEKEND, CC Athletes!

Now that Cfine is 'roided up, she's gonna bulk faster than the rest of us so we'll have to lift harder...

Just kidding, hon! I couldn't resist joking about your steroids here in the exercise thread... I hope you feel better SOON!

Lol Trillex!

I could have insisted on getting in sooner but decided that I could handle it. I love this particular doctor so he's worth the wait. He is very conservative in his approach to foot care and doesn't take every little opportunity to operate like so many around here.

Just came by to check in and say hi. I kind of feel a little lazy because I haven't been able to work out. I am going to hit the weights hard tomorrow. Hope everyone is having a good weekend. Very rainy here in Tennessee but at least no tornadoes.

Oh, I see! I'm glad to hear you have a good doctor, whom you trust.

Don't feel guilty about missing some workouts. You'll be back on your feet -- literally -- very soon.

Hey guys! Sorry for being MIA for a bit. The family went to the mountain province, and we had no net. But that didn't stop me from shaking it up! I'm down 15 pounds and I'm glad about it.
Did 30 minutes arms only breast stroke.
And hit the irons. 30 minute uphill bike tomorrow.
Cheers guys!

That's awesome, Raph! It's so great that you have such a wonderful outdoor life! I'm still jealous of your WATERFALL... HaHa!

Just curious, do you have winter or a rainy season in the Philippines? My family is from the Caribbean and we don't really have "winter" but we have a rainy season, when everybody just sits around inside. It's not really *cold* and, in most places, we don't even get *too much* rain but people stop doing outside stuff until the rainy season is over. I'm just curious to know if it's like that in the South Pacific.

Take care of yourself! The workouts will be waiting for you when you're up on your feet again (literally). We'll keep the weight bench warm for you -- I promise!

Make sure you take a book with you out to the pool, to exercise those eye muscles and those page-turning arm muscles -- "non-exercise activity thermogenesis" -- just make sure to turn the pages yourself, instead of having the servants do it for you...

Haha! The waterfall is refreshing, the only problem with the outdoor life are the mosquitoes, and the occasional tiny silkworms hanging from trees above. Anyway, no we don't have winter just dry, and rainy. Although we have a province, I think it was named Benguet, on Mt. Pulag. The temperature there reached below 0. It's a first for the country.
And during the rain, I just take a dip in the pool for laps if its cardio day

Thanks! Cfine .

My right foots bruised, I got it when my cousin and I tried out this test your kicking strength game.

I need some tips on gardening, I can't seem to get my flowers growing, it's been a week and I haven't seen anything sprout. Oh, and I water everyday. What should I do?
