Hi there!

Nice place you've got here... I think I'll crash for a while

I'm Gene. I'm a big dude trying to change his bigness, and am currently suffering through the induction phase on Atkins (again).

I did this 16 years ago with great result - lost 47 pounds, got waay under the dreaded 300 mark, saw my blood pressure normalize without drugs - but then I've just kind of spent all my time since then eating and idling myself into a worse mess than ever before. High BP, back issues, low energy, and now also 16 years older and less able to deal with the effects of gravity...

I've got a 4-year-old son now, and he's my total motivation for doing this. My father ditched me when I was younger than my boy is now, and I swore I'd never leave my own child like that. But then of course my wife sweetly reminded me that there's more than one way for him to lose me. Gulp. So I'm determined to get healthy again.

I tend to lose a bunch of weight at first, but then plateau for weeks at a time and give up entirely. My wife is extremely supportive, but she's not dieting with me and I really, really, really want some understanding folks to talk to this time.

Hope that's you guys.

Hello, Gene! It's great to have you join us!

You have a great motivation for losing weight and being healthy, with your 4-year-old son. What a wonderful thing to do for your family, as well as yourself. And I'll bet that when the weight goes down, you'll find your energy level and comfort moving go way up, making it easier to chase around and play with your little boy.

Good for you for recognizing your patterns and coming here for support. Lots of us stall after making progress (waves own hand wildly ), but then we eventually go back to losing again if we stay with it. Be sure to check in here regularly, post often, get advice if you aren't making progress or have questions, or need support from understanding people who want you to succeed. The people on the Century Club part of the board have been through exactly the things you are going through, and they couldn't be nicer or more supportive. And join a challenge group, here, too, to get a group of diet buddies who want to hear from you as often as possible.

While going through induction, don't push your body too much (I cut down exercise and upped sleep), make sure you get enough salt (more than usual, try drinking broth), drink lots of water, and remember that it just gets easier. There is a good set of threads for newbies (or newly-returned lowcarbers) on the main board that you might find helpful, too. Good luck. I hope we hear lots more from you.

yes, and I am here for exactly the same reason as you...except my boy is 5. And let me tell you how much energy you will have to play with him in just a couple of months! Stick with us okay and you will lose much weight, and gain some good stuff. The people on this board are my main supporters. They have been here, and done that as far as issues I run into. They will help analyze your menus.

I was barely moving when I started this WOE. Now I ride 10 miles a day at least on my bike and hike on the weekend. I bought a trail-a-bike off craigslist and am dragging my son along with me some times. So I am getting to spend quality time with my little dude.

Plus our whole family is eating better. My husband doesn't have chronic heartburn, my son actually loves mixed veggies, cucumbers, celery, and asks for them!!

I went from a size 22 to a size 14 so far and I have 50 lbs more to lose - at least.

So you see, my friend, that there are many different areas that losing some weight will help you with. I am glad you are walking with us on this journey.

Thank you, everyone, for the warm welcome!

I'm always hesitant to share my failures with anyone, but it's always so much easier when they understand what I'm going through.

I'm through the worst of induction, and now I'm just bored with my meals. It's actually kind of good because I can leave a lot on my plate when I get tired of it, and at the same time train my big old stomach to get full quicker.

I'm actually planning to tackle the plateauing proactively by interspersing Atkins with a general low-glycemic diet through the rest of the year. That means I'll have to go through induction a few more times (probably), but it also means I'll be able to slip up while on "break" and not completely wreck my diet. And with a smaller stomach I'll only be able to eat so much pizza.

That's interesting about the salt and water, because I'm just sort of craving both on my own... even with all the bacon I've been eating (mmmmm... bacon!).

Side note: one benefit of having high blood pressure is that I've been on a water pill for months, so fluid retention isn't causing the yo-yo effect I experienced last time. I'm a daily weigher (yes, that's a bad habit), but this time around I'm comforted to see that number go down every single day.

Thanks again, and I'm glad to be here. There don't seem to be many other guys, but I'm just fine with that. Dudes are jerks.

THIS right here, by the way, is what I'm after. I used to be an avid biker--with chiseled calves that could cut glass--and I've wanted so much to share that with The Dude.

And it's not just the biking... I want to spend lots and lots of straight up quality time with him, as you say.

Congrats on your losses so far and on your determination to do this! Stick with it and you will feel so much better in just a few months - weeks, actually! Try not to look at the big weight loss goal, but focus on losing, say ten pounds at a time. Find non-food rewards and celebrate how well you are doing! Also, I have always found reading and posting on the boards helps me stay focused and motivated. You CAN do this!!!
