Kyla I know you are getting excited... tomorrow the day... have you got everything ready? Prayers going up for you that everything goes smoothly and you get to come home quickly....

I went out and got me some sf pudding, soups, more popsicles, I have all my vitamins... I think I am ready.... I have to drink Magnesium Citrate tomorrow at noon.... that is the only real thing I am dreading.....

me and my son went to the drive in last night, seen Wall-e and Narnia..... I feel asleep....couldn't keep my eyes open... I seen alittle of both movies...lol

Didn't get home till about 1:30.... hope I don't fall asleep in church...lol....

I have so much to do today.... around the house... I know I won't be able to get it done after coming home from the hospital, for at least a few weeks..... So after I get home from church I must start on that...

Hope everyone is having a great weekend....

Morning Ladies! I'm up early today 'cause I'm running to Sam's Club at 10am to pick up the new Guitar Hero for my Xbox. I've been waiting to get it to start my "official" workout routine. I'm at 6 weeks post-op tomorrow, so it's time. LOL I like to play GH while I walk on the tready and it'll be so much easier after I get a wireless guitar today.

After my 4 hours at Mr. Biggs on Friday, I was STILL wiped out yesterday. LOL I laid down for a couple of hours and took a nap. But, I figure I'm making progress since I was able to bowl, mini-golf, laser tag and play arcade games.

Unfortunately, I have discovered a couple of slider foods that I have to be careful with. Goldfish crackers and popcorn. I won't even buy pretzels 'cause I know I'd be munching on the all the time. These foods are different because you can eat a lot more without getting full. Not good.

Kyla - I'll be praying for you tomorrow!

Have a wonderful day everyone!!!

I found it at Wal-Mart. Very expensive...$6.00 for 4! So, I'm going to try to find a copy-cat recipe.

I found one for you.

Low Carb Frappuccino : Sweet treats : Active Low-Carber Forums

Take one 20 oz water bottle and fill it 1/2 - 2/3 of the way with water
Add heavy whipping cream until the bottle is full (approximately 8 - 10 oz)
Add vanilla extract to taste
2 packets of Splenda
Add instant coffee to taste
Cap the bottle, shake well and VOILA!
The whole 20oz bottle has *about* 6 net carbs.

*They then go on to argue if it has 6 carbs or 10 carbs

I might try using the lowcarb chocolate syrup instead of the vanilla if you like chocolate instead. I use a tsp in my coffe and while you can tell it isn't real chocolate it is still pretty good.

Hello everyone... I am hoping ya'all could point me to some "life after lap band" type of info, or a blog or something. Or maybe just share, or point me out to some previous posts.

My doctor has suggested that I have either a lap band installed, or have a RNY surgery, as a "cure" for acid reflux. Quick back story:

I've had vocal chord issues all my life, since I was a teen. I get raspy easy, and commonly lose my voice for months at a time. I once lost my voice for about 2 years. This issue went undiagnosed until about 8 years ago (maybe seven?) when a doctor began to treat me for acid reflux. It was a miracle - I could speak again, and consistently so.

About 4 years ago, the reflux went into high gear: previously, the only symptom I ever had was loss of voice. Now, I have extreme symptoms - hoarse voice, stomach pain, burning BM's (TMI ), etc. etc. It has stopped responding well to medication.

The nature of my work requires that I am able to speak, sadly, and I am now almost constantly on Prednisone to keep the swelling down in my vocal chords. In the last three years, I have gained about 130 lbs. I once Atkins'd a lot of weight off successfully, but since then have gained a total (yo-yo style) of about 165 lbs.

At any rate, the doctor is not suggesting bariatric surgery for weight loss - he believes that if I succesfully got if off with low carb once, I could do it again, especially in the absence of the Prednisone. He is, however, suggesting it as a "cure" for the GERD. He says I am in danger of Barrett's Esophagus (cancer) - in fact he says that I will definitely end up with it.

The reason they suggest the bariatric over something like a Nissan Wrap is simple if sad - my insurance doesn't cover any surgical remedy for GERD. It didn't used to cover bariatric surgery either, but we just recieved an annoucement at work that this will now be covered.

Sorry for the long read - but I am just hoping for some insight as to what life after lap band/RNY is like, on a long-term basis. It's almost a no brainer that I will have it done, with throat cancer being the alternative, but I would still like to know realistically what I have to look forward to if I go this route. The only person I know in-person who had this done is pretty much miserable and obsessed with food and eating, although she is now a normal weight and has been for some time.

Thanks for any input!

Jake, I'm so sorry you're going through this. Yours is a unique situation, given that most of the resources about lap-band focus, understandably, on the weight loss aspect of it. If you Google "lapbandtalk" you'll find a website specifically for those who've been banded, and I've found it to be a really inspiring source of information from people who've been successful. I was kind of afraid, too, that after wls my entire life would revolve around food and eating and what I could and couldn't have, but since my surgery in January I've actually begun to realize just how much of my life revolved around food before. There's a pretty steep learning curve as you figure out the "rules" for the band (which I'm still working on to some extent), but after that you just live your life. I wish you luck as you try to figure out what you want to do. Please feel free to check in here if you have other questions.

Lisa, happy belated birthday! I hope it was a great day for you.

Kyla, I don't know if you'll read this before your surgery, but know that I'll be thinking about you tomorrow and hoping things go well. As I think I've said before, it's going to suck for a couple of days, and within a week or so you'll probably consider selling your child for something to chew on (I know I would have--good thing I don't have kids yet!). Once you get past that though, you'll be on a pretty amazing journey. Welcome to it!

Tracy, I hope you're having a fantastic time in Vegas--can't wait to hear all about it!

I went to Goodwill today and took 4 big trash bags full of clothes. It'll be a nice tax deduction next year, but better than that it was a big psychological burden that I feel like I've gotten rid of. Among them were all of my 'safe' outfits of the last several sizes--the ones that I felt I looked okay in, even at my highest weight--and it was kind of hard, in a way, to put them in the bags and haul them out the door. After we dropped them off the bf and I went to Old Navy because I'm forever on the lookout for a decent denim skirt--not too short, dark enough wash, not such a low rise that you need a bikini wax before putting it on, etc. Apparently finding such a skirt is like looking for the Holy Grail, but I digress. So I looked at Old Navy, and while they didn't have the denim skirt, they did have some cute black skirts, which I'm also always on the lookout for. I was disappointed to see that they didn't have a 20, then thought I'd try on an 18 just for fun, and holy crap it fit! It even had a teensy amount of room to spare, so I went ahead and bought a 16 because I'll be able to wear it for a couple weeks longer than I would if I bought an 18. That's a regular 16, not a women's 16! Woohoo! And as if that wasn't enough, it was only $10!

Hope everyone is doing well.

Thanks JennyV. Don't get me wrong - I'm very overweight at this point too, so losing weight is "the big bonus" as my doctor puts it. Honestly, it's good to hear what your post says - my life tends to revolve around food and drink now. I guess it wouldn't be much of a change.

Good morning, ladies! I'm sorry I've been MIA the last few days. It seems like they've gone past in a whirlwind! Well as you all know, today's the day! My surgery is at 3pm and I have to be there at 1pm to register. I am so nervous!!! I've never had surgery before, so it's kind of scary. I guess with knowing what it's like at the hospital and taking care of post-op patients makes it even worse for me. Thanks for all the prayers and well wishes! I have to stay overnight, so I won't be home until sometime Tuesday. I'm not going to take my laptop with me. So...I'll try to write Tuesday evening when I get home. Thanks again for all the support!

Kyla Looking forward to hearing how you are doing... As you know mine Rny is in the morning, I have to be there at 6 am... and the surgery is sheduale for 8:30.... I am trying my best not to be nervous..... thats hard not to do.... No matter what people tell you and how much you have learn about what is going to happen, it still the fear of the unknown.....

I am praying that the Lord gives you peace today as the you get closer to the surgery time and that everything goes well, and that you have very little pain....I know you have done all the doctor has told you to do before surgery......

I have alot to do this morning, getting things ready for my hospital stay... and for the time afterwards at home.... got to be home at 12 to start my magnesium cocktail... YUK!

Jake welcome to the board, so sorry about what you are going thur... I have been doing the 1,000 calorie diet for about 3 1/2 weeks now getting ready for surgery and over the past few weeks I have realized just how much my life revolved around food.... Me and my Dh have been out to eat several time in the past few weeks and there is very little i can eat.. I have been eating small servings and staying away from anything with sugar, eating low fat, low carb, high protein.... my Dh is having a hard time adjusting to my new way of eating too..... Never really thought much about how much our lives revolved around food.... He looks so disappointed when I tell him that I can't have a bite... I told him yesterday its not easy saying No, but I know that I have too, and I know that the end results will make it worth it.....

He felt guilty at first eating things in front of me, and I told him not to be, that this is my life choice not his.... now he eats things in front of me and tells me how good they are... of course the best he has every had

but like I said, I am doing this for me, not for vanity reasons, but for my health... I am only 47 and if I don't do it, I will be in a wheelchair in another year, my knee is quickly giving out....

there are many ways to get information for this... you can check online at Obesity.com and find doctors in your area, go to a conferane.... I wish you the best of luck in what every you do....

Jake - I would definitely do the band. I'm 6 weeks post-op (RNY) and there are just no words to describe it. It's tough. It's more expensive...the recovery is much longer...your diet is much stricter. Do the band. LOL I wish I had.

Lisa - I can't believe your surgery is tomorrow! Wow...when you wake up and feel like a truck has driven over your mid-section, just remember it's "normal" and press your pain-pump as much as possible! The 1st hour I was in my room, I pressed it 57 times. LOL It will only dispense every 10 minutes though. I hurt...very bad. Pain meds don't seem to work on me too well. Lord-willing you'll be different.

When your able, take a hot shower. Mine had a chair and a hand-held sprayer. It felt so wonderful...I think it helped loosen my muscles. I felt better after my daily shower than any other time.

If you can't drink water, then suck on ice. I actually had no problem drinking all my water in the hospital. It wasn't until a few days had passed that I started gagging when I'd try to drink something.

I kept it quiet and dark in my room. It seemed to help for some reason.

I know you'll do great! I'm excited for you.

Good morning all,

Kyla, good thoughts are being sent to Ohio!

Lisa, we'll be thinking about you tomorrow too.

I woke up at 209.8 this morning, which means I'm .8 pounds away from the 50 pound mark and less than 10 pounds away from onederland!

Have a great day, everyone!

OMGosh, I finally figured out why I sometimes have problems digesting food. I read an article that talks about how RNY patients can sometimes clog their stoma with mucous. Today, I didn't take my decongestant because I forgot. I have horrible allergies, so my mucous was thick. Apparently, it can clog your stoma! So, when I went to eat breakfast, it felt like I had eating a full-sized meal and I was pukey for about an hour or so.

So, I'm off to take my Mucinex.

I might try using the lowcarb chocolate syrup instead of the vanilla if you like chocolate instead. I use a tsp in my coffe and while you can tell it isn't real chocolate it is still pretty good.

If you are still recovering from surgery this might not be a good recipe because of the fat in the whipping cream-diahrhea and or dumping. Better for when someone is recovered.

Okay Ladies, I'm gonna come clean here:

I've been a little disappointed to see some of the advice from your nutritionists/practices. I already posted about how the BeneProtein is probably not the best choice and now I see that the calcium levels some of your practices are recommending have been out of date -- I had RNY 3 years ago and even THEN the standard was at least 1500mg. Also, it seems that some of you have not been cautioned to take Calcium CITRATE, not other forms, as RNY-ers will not absorb the others as readily because of a lack of stomach acids. (This is not true for Bandsters, I assume.)

It is not a personal protocol I'm advocating, but standards that are considered a given in the RNY community. If your doctor/nutritionist has you taking Tums for calcium or Flinstones for vitamins, you are just not getting the best advice. I urge you to educate yourselves by going outside of LCF to WLS-specific boards and read up on what will keep you the most healthy and strong.

Rootin' for ya' and wishing you all success,
