WOE: 70% Fat--20 carbs or less
Start Date: 7/1/2003
OK...I've read them all....but...

How is it possible to follow the CAD plan and lose weight. I find 1 little cheat is enough to stall me for 3 or 4 days. How can you eat a higher carb meal every day and still lose? Their theory is if you eat all your carbs in a 1 hour period, your blood sugar will not rise/insulin will not spike.

My 10 year old daughter is pretty heavy too. She is too embarrased to take Atkins food to school, so I was thinking of trying CAD with her. She can eat carb free the other 2 meals. But I can't imagine it working. Anybody ever wonder this too?

I don't know. For me, the few times when I've eaten starchy carbs in one meal, even after eating totally LC for all the meals beforehand, I don't lose.

It works for some people. Some of them are here, so maybe they'll weigh in .

I could be totally wrong, but wasn't the new edition of CAD modified so there wasn't really a cheat mean per se anymore?

Maybe Sommersizing or South Beach would work for your daughter?

Anyone else know?

Hi Missy

I read the CAD version of low carb too and thought it couldn't would work for me either. Although lots of people get on really well with it.

Don't understand what you mean by "Atkins Food" though, it's just normal good healthy stuff - a nice salad maybe with meat, or tuna or cheese, nuts for a snack after indution. Why would she be embarassed to eat this ?

Hope you find the way which works best for you both though, good luck.

(edited to say that, mind you I don't have kids so I probably don't understand, perhaps all the other kids have sandwiches and carby stuff and hers would look like "diet food" to them all.)

Your daughter can do Atkins and still not be embarrassed! I am not sure how old she is, but:

Find a low carb bread or the lowest carb whole wheat bread you can for sandwiches. Make them cheese or meat with mayo or mustard and NOT Miracle Whip. There is sugar free peanut butter and jelly. Cucumber sandwiches are a yummy “tea time” food. Mix up some cream cheese and butter, spread it on both sides of the bread...cut into 4 squares and add one slice of cucumber with a sprinkle of salt.

Slice up lots of veggies and add in any number of low carb dips.

Slice up some fruit with yogurt dip.

Make veggie or fruit kabobs.

Chicken or tuna salad stuffed in green peppers or in tiny little cherry tomatoes.

Blue Bunny yogurt. Made with Splenda.

Stuffed celery sticks…. cream cheese, goat cheese, peanut butter, etc…

Bake some low carb goodies.

If she is embarrassed by having “Sugar Free” candy…take it out of the wrapper!

LC soup in a thermos.

Roll ups. Use lettuce or meat and roll up a snack. My favorite is to take provolone and smear some cream cheese on it. I then put a slice of turkey in it and roll it up and eat!

Fried pepperoni chips. Nice and crispy. Good if you add a little garlic to them!

Beef jerky.

Find some lc crackers or whole-wheat crackers and make up some yummy spread or cut up meat and cheese to make “mock” lc Lunchables.

Sugar Free Jello cups…. store bought or homemade.

Make some low carb muffins.

LC cheesecake in individual muffin tins. Put a little sugar free candy in it to make it look cooler.

Mini quiches in individual muffin tins.
You can melt a lc chocolate bar and dip low glycemic fruit in it. Think chocolate covered strawberries or cherries! Yum!

Make her Kool-Aid but use Splenda to sweeten it. Diet V-8 Splash is good, and makes awesome popsicles. Sugar free pop occasionally. At home make her lc root beer floats! Diet root beer and heavy cream. Yum!

Make lc chocolate truffles.

If she likes rice… Get brown rice. Much better than white rice. But make this a treat!

Pickles, olives, peppers. Ooh black olives stuffed with cream cheese are really good!

Hard-boiled eggs. Deviled eggs.

Nuts. Small packet or baggie. You can also make spiced nuts or sweet nuts.

Cheese sticks.

The list can go on and on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And honestly…I don’t see anything here that would be embarrassing!

*************************

Always think how to make it look fun! Use different cookie cutters. Get a book on carving food. Find really cute little containers to put stuff in. Find her the coolest lunch box/bag on earth!

And you must also realize that you need to set an example! You cannot do a “Do as I say, not as I do”. You will sabotage her. Also consider letting her have 1 free day at school if it will help!

And realize that she may sneak food anyway. Try to talk with her and live by example. Hopefully she will follow. But if you can start explaining things now…and keep talking about them CASUALLY…hopefully she will grow to learn and accept it!

The Doctors Heller (the authors of CAD) have written a book just for this purpose: How to help your carb addicted kids. The plan is modified to suit a kid's needs.

I don't remember the title, but I found it at the library.

I used CAD for several months, and it did work for me to lose weight; however, I craved carbs all the time, which made it a struggle. I'm using Atkins now (although I do drink the occasional glass of wine) and it's more comfortable for me.

What's more embarassing- getting made fun of for being overweight or taking LC food to school. My daughter does not like to take sandwiches, she would rather have meat and cheese rolled up and held with a toothpick. If she has to explain, tell her to say that she does not like to bring sandwiches becuse the bread gets mushy. It's true. Pack her string chese, nuts, berries, etc. I don't see how that would embarass her. Another thing my daughter loves is slender sliced meat with cream cheese and a pickle rolled up. I made these for her even before we started Sugar Busters.

Luna what a great list of food. You have plenty of ideas to work with. When you're a kid everything is embarassing because you are egocentric and think everyone is always focusing on you. I would dress up her food like in Luna's post make the other kids jealous Lol.

WOE: Atkins atkins rah rah rah
Start Date: Re-started January 4, 2007
I started my first low carb WOE with the Carbohydrate Addicts Diet. It did work for me. I was losing, although not as fast as I am with Atkins. I think at my weight level, Atkins is the better choice. CAD is probably better for people who do not have so much to lose. I had to stop when I was treated for another tumor and had radiation. I was so sick all the time that the little I could eat was usually high carb. CAD may be an alternative for your daughter, but Luna is right. There are so many fun low carb things that she could take to school without it looking like a diet. Good luck!

I started out with CAD and lost my first 30 pounds with it. I felt I needed to be a little stricter and that is why I went to Atkins. I would say for a kid it might just work well. The carb meal is not a free for all in the one hour you still have to balance it with meats and veggies.

i have not read CAD, but it is my belief that ALL programs work, just differently for different people. i would say someone younger could benifit from something like CAD because its not teaching to constantly eliminate ALL 'bad' carbs... but instead teaching moderation. if we had learned that younger, perhaps we wouldnt need to follow induction to fix the imbalance of our diet. again i have only read DANDR so this is my opinion only.
