10% CHALLENGE - JULY

This thread is a meeting place for the 10% Challenge participants. We are a group of 4 teams (3 members each) who are working to learn about health while breaking our weight loss goals into smaller, more manageable steps.

To keep motivated, we have agreed to participate in a friendly competition between teams. We earn points based on the progress toward our weight loss goals. We can earn additional points by completing the mini-challenges that encourage healthy behaviors that support these goals. We provide positive support for our members and recognition of the small achievements that tend to get overlooked.

Although we are no longer seeking additional membership to this challenge, please feel free to read the information we post as well as follow our progress!

Welcome to the first month of the 10% Challenge. Here are the participants:

Every single team checked in on time - what a great start! Team leaders have been provided with the "official" first 10% goal amount. If you're not sure about your goal, check with your team leader.

To figure out how many points you earn for weight loss, I will simply divide the pounds lost by the number of pounds calculated for the first 10% goal. Your team will earn 1 point for each 10% lost. For example, if your goal is 10 lbs and you lose 5 of them, then 5/10 = .50 or 50% of your goal. You would earn 5 points for your team. Weight loss points will only be calculated on the 1st of each month.

The next required check-in will be July 15th by midnite. Each team leader should submit the current weight for each team member by PMing it directly to me. This is for the sake of accountability. Your team will also earn points by submitting the information on time. I will send team leaders a pm with the format to use when we get closer to the 15th.

Two mini-challenges are planned for each month. Participation is optional, but completing the task can help earn points for your team. Team leaders, this is something you can use as a starting point for building team spirit and cohesion!

Mini-Challenge for July 2-15: Find up to 3 brief inspirational quotes from any of the following 3 areas: weight loss, setting/achieving goals, or good nutrition. You earn 1 team point for each quote (maximum of 3 total points for each person). If you know who said it, be sure you give them credit. Humor is appreciated!

(Since spirituality is a personal matter - nothing of a religious nature, please.)

Participants - please PM quotes directly to me. I'll use them as we go along.

Hello everyone!

I hope each of you found a healthy way to celebrate the holiday! Here's hoping that participation in this challenge helped you to make better choices. Please take the time to check on your team members. If anyone got side-tracked, help them get back on the wagon. A slip up is not a reason to throw in the towel.

Cosmic Treadmill is the only team so far to have every single team member participate in the mini-challenge. Way to go! There is still time to earn those points for your team by getting it done, so find the words that help you and send them in to me!

Hello all!

Just a reminder ... team leaders have been asked to submit weigh-in information by July 15th at midnight. This is also the last day you will be able to submit quotes for the first mini-challenge.

Team leaders have also been asked to collect information about the plan you're using so I can post it here in the main thread. It makes sharing info and asking questions a whole lot easier.

Your post on the 15th is for accountability. You will not earn weight loss points until the 1st, but each person earns 2 points for their team if leaders submit weight information on time. If you know you will be away from your computer this weekend, it is okay to send your information to your team leader early.

Is anyone interested in knowing how many points each team has earned for the mini challenge?

How are teams coming along so far? Is there something I can do to provide assistance? Remember, we are all in this to lose weight together!

I just want to wish everyone from all the teams good luck!!! I will admit, I do peek in on the other teams.
I hope that is okay? I'm just glad that everyone is sticking to it. It's funny when I peek in the other teams I just want to cheer them on. I want EVERYONE to succeed. Yay us!!

MINI CHALLENGE FOR July 16-30

Drink a minimum of 64 oz of water ... this is the minimum eight (8) ounce glasses. You will earn 1 point for each day you meet the challenge.

To make this task easier to complete, herbal tea, decaf coffee, and sugar free flavored water WILL COUNT toward water totals. You are also allowed to use the little pouches of flavorings if they are sugar free. Adding a squeeze of lemon or lime is also acceptable.

Nothing with caffeine or carbonation will count toward water totals.

To get your points for this task, tell your team leader how many days you drank 64 oz of water when you turn in your results for the next weigh-in.

(dvanbeus - you will earn your extra 2 points by completing this task for a minimum of 10 days).

Emeraldskye,

I don't see your curiosity as a problem at all! I think it's simply easier for teams to have their own threads so they don't have to dig to keep track of their members. Maybe you will learn something by seeing what others are doing that will help your own weight loss journey.

I'm happy to see notes left here in the main thread too! It would be nice to see teams communicating with each other a little more. Although there are separate team threads, you can always post here - especially if there is something you want everyone in the challenge to know.

As soon as I get the results from one last team, I will post the results. Are you curious to see how everyone is doing? I hope so!

Yes I agree I would like to see some interaction between teams , Chiding and friendly banter welcomed too. I am very interested to see how we stack up against the other teams this month.

Hmm.... water consumption now that will be a real challenge.

We have a small issue. One of the teams has not heard from a member, and she did not check in for the 15th. This challenge was kept small for a reason - so we can look out for each other. I can only assume that she needs help. SHE'S ONE OF OURS AND WE NEED TO GO GET HER!

Here are the results for the first check-in as well as the team standings. I've included information on the plans each person is following so if you have questions, comments, or info to share you can post it in the main thread.

The points members earned so far are from:

a) turning in team results on time for the 15th (2 points each person)
b) the mini challenge (1 point per quote, 3 points per person max)

I found this article and thought I would share it. It seems to be pretty timely, considering the latest mini-challenge.

Can other drinks such as diet sodas and herbal tea count towards my 8 glasses of water for the day?


The latest recommendations from the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science, Dietary Reference Intake for Electrolytes and Water say:

"The fluids consumed do not have to be only water. Individuals can obtain their fluids from a variety of beverages and foods. Contrary to popular opinion, consumers do not need to consume 'eight glasses of water a day' to meet their fluid needs."

However my own personal opinion, particularly for people trying to lose weight, is to encourage additional water intake whenever possible. I feel it helps to cleanse the body when weight loss and fat breakdown is occurring. I also know that it helps to keep the hands and mouth busy, so snacking is less. This is a form of behavior modification. I personally know that many people feel better when at least 4-6 glasses of plain old H2O is consumed to help meet total fluid needs.
