'05 Biggest Losers - Team 3

Hi Stairsteps, dvanbeus, simplemaw & Chicky,

Figured I'd jsut get us started in a thread. ONe thing I saw in the other thread was the individual posts for why, so I'll be copying those over.

I dont know if we'll be naming teams or not, but I was thinking if we do...what do you all think about "Lavish Losers"?? If you all have any suggestions please post them

Boy... this feels like a job interview with all of these question!

Why I should be a part of this challenge:

All of my life I have struggled to lose weight. I remember being weighed when I was 13 and being over 300lbs. Until I started Atkins this past October, nothing worked for me. Since then I have lost over 50lbs and am at the lowest I can remember ever being. I still have 100lbs to go to reach my ideal weight though, and I am really noticing that being in a challenge really helps me to stay true to myself and my new WOE.

Why you want to become part of a team:

For one plain and simple reason... I am such a competative person! Okay, more than one reason... I also love the group aspect because of the support and exchanging of ideas. I also love chatting with others and encouraging them to be their very best since I know that occassionally I need someone to bolster my moral as well! Also, it is nice to have people around who will hold me accountable for my actions!

What is your...

Gender? Female
Weight? 279lbs
Height? 6'3
Ideal Weight? 180lbs
Expected Loss? 100lbs!
Waist Size? 52
Hip Size? 57
Carb Intake: 20g/day (re-inducting)

I want to be in this challenge because I am extremely competetive and this challenge structure gives me something to shoot for and others to "compete" against (cool thing is we all win!!!!) and the reason for a being on a team is to provide and gain support.

My name is Katie, I just turned 30, single, no kids. I have a few big reasons for losing the weight, one is my family history of heart problems, my father had several heart attacks and also had a heart transplant (it was a new science at the time, he was the 152 transplant in the WORLD) before he died when I was 4. My mother has had 2 heart attacks, 1 of them was a massive coronary and she died but thankfully was able to be revived. My Brother had his first heart attack at 28 and a quadruple bypass at 36 - so you can tell I have a serious probablity of having problems - thankfully none have been discovered yet so I might get lucky. My second reason is Vanity, pure and simple vanity.

I'm Female (duh), 239 lbs, 5'8.5" My ideal weight is between 125 and 164, but knowing my body, my goal is 155. I WILL lose a minimum of 50lbs and hopefully the entire 84 that I have left. Waist 40, hips 51.

Goals: Carbs 40 or less daily, workout 4 times a week (for me this includes Kung fu cause that is a heck of a workout!) Water - I'm going for 64 ozs per day, cause right now I probably drink 16ozs or less consistently - anything more than 64 would probably not be possible at this point in the challenge

Good Luck everyone!

Chicky

Chicky,

I am so psyched about this!! Thanks so much Shawn and Sweets for all you hard work and this amazing idea.

My name is Dawn, I'm 47yrs old married with two kids 20 & 15. As an adult I have never, rode a bike, rollerbladed, gotten on a swing or anyother playground equipment, ice skated, tucked in a shirt or worn a belt. I have gotten my big fat a** stuck in a water slide, been unable to close the bar on the Tilt a Wirl and had my life flash before my eyes, feared air travel, booths in restaurants and lawn chairs. I have started more things than I can count but have finished few. I am so ready to do this I can't even begin to explain it. I have high blood sugar, and aches and pains that belong on an old lady all due to my weight. I am dying to be part of a team to support, encourage, coax or shove each other along to success. I'm unconcerned who my team-mates are, we're all here fighting the same battle, I look forward to meeting new people and developing some lasting frienships.

My sorry stats are weight-276, ideal weight-145, height- 5'6", waist-46, hips-52. I plan on keeping my carbs at 20grams for the foreseeable future and will shoot for 112 oz of water and 4x60min workouts weekly. I hope to lose a minimum of 100 lbs in 2005.

Someone once said to me that by the time you hit 50 you should have purged yourself of everything that isn't working in your life, that way you can start the second half of your life with a clean slate. This is the begining of my purgeing.

thanks for listening

Give me a short response as to why you should be a part of this challenge and why you want to become part of a team:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I should be a part of this challenge because when I went to see the play Annie for a few brief moments I thought I wasn't going to be able to fit my rear-end in the theater chair. Because I have spent 10 years getting this fat and want to lose it all in one year.
Because I have to shop in the fat lady section have to fear showing up to social functions in the same outfit as my grandma.

I want to be part of a team because teams are so motivating.

I'm female. I weigh 246. I am 5'3". My ideal is 125. I expect to lose 100lbs minimun in 2005.
I will have to check my waist and hip in the morning, I am holding a sleeping child right now.

and I heard simplemaw was going to show up, too, I'd also be happy to be on her team

(all of a sudden I am feeling like I should be on a school bus with my backpack across the seat chanting, "this spot is saved")

I didn't get my stats up last night, I was multitasking while on the computer (holding a child).

waist is 44.5
hips are 54.5

Hi! My name is Mary Anne, but I usually go by maw around here.

I should be in this challenge because it sounds like fun and because I need to lose a bunch of weight. This sounds like a good tool to help me do that. I'd like to be on a team because I like the accountability and to know the people to whom I have made myself accountable. (Why is it so much easier to be accountable to others than to ourselves? )

Gender - female
Current weight - 240
Current height - 5'3"
Ideal weight - Somewhere in the neighborhood of 140
How much do I expect to lose in 2005? I'm a slow loser, but generally fairly consistent. My goal for 2005 is 52 pounds, or an average of a pound a week.
Hips - 57.5"
Waist - 44"
Carbs goal - 30 or less per day

Thanks for setting this up!

Here's a pm I sent to Chicky to introduce myself to her. It has a bit more personal info about me.

My real name is Mary Anne, but I usually go by maw here because it's shorter and easier to type. Hmmmmm. If I average about 8 posts a day, I wonder how many more calories I'd burn if I always typed out my name?

So, a quick intro. I'm 48, single, no kids, currently taking a break between being a CPA and, I hope, going back to school this fall to become a librarian. I've been doing Atkins for about 20 months, and have lost 72 pounds. No cheats, but I sure did binge on "legal" stuff this summer. It's amazing how you can pack on the pounds if you eat cream by the quart! Current weight is 240, ideal weight somewhere around 140, and I plan to lose at least 52 pounds this year.

Hi girls. Does anyone else not have excel on their computer? I haven't had time to read about points and whatever today.

Spyder - WE CANNOT be this big when we turn 31 ok??? We're gonna be PHOTOGRAPHABLE in our 30s!

OH chicky? Please post, I can't wait to meat you --- ha ha ha, I meant meet you but I really did type meAt. I guess after lo carbing for a while one naturally me A t is a naturally misspelling.

dvanbeus - I didn't realize how tall you are! 6'3" No wonder you don't look "that" heavy. And you're blonde? No fair no fair no fair.

mary anne, dearie, I think cream is NOT a legal food in my house. When I ate pie on Christmas I was thinking how much yummier cream would be! Oh I love cream!
Also, we're not twins anymore since I gained weight BUT I'm looking to be your twin again by our Jan. 10th Sierra weigh in -

Uh, CHICKY - the rest of us are in the New Year New You 12 week challenge together on Team Sierra. If you're not in another 12 week group you can come hang out with us there too. We lost some Sierra's along the way and we'd love to have you.

ALSO

I KNOW I can lose 100lbs this year. I know I can.

I cannot imagine how fun it will be to be able to say to people, Ya, I lose 100 lbs.

There are so many people I know now that don't remember what I looked like before I got so big and so many people that I met AFTER I got this way. I can't wait to lose weight so when people see me they can see what I really look like.

People are always saying, "oh your children look just like your husband." Yes, they do, BUT I also think if I only had one chin and my actual facial bone structure showed I would look more like me! (and then people could better judge who my children look like. It's not like I even care, it's just an odd thought I've had.

It will be so awesome when we all make it. Maw, when you hit your goal of losing 52 lbs this year you will be WELL into wonderland. What a thought!

First post from the other thread...

Calling all members of Team #3 in the '05 Biggest Looser Challenge!

We have a few things that we need to get accomplished to get organized and make things run smoothly. Specifically we need a team leader and a team name... any suggestions would be welcome! Also, we should try to send a quick intro so that we all get to know each other better!

My first suggestion is that we all try to post on a daily basis if possible. My second suggestion is that we try to get our stats in on the 14th and the day before the last of each month just so that the team leader has time to get the results together and sent off in time... to avoid losing 100 points for being late!

Okay, I know I will have more, but that is it for now! I'm looking forward to doing this challenge, and being the BIGGEST LOOSER OF ALL!

Second Message From Other Thread...

Who I am...
Most of you will recognize the following message from my intro into the New Year New You Challenge, but I am re-posting it here so that Chicky (Dawn) knows who I am as well.

My name is Deborah (Debbie, Deb) and I live in chilly Nova Scotia, Canada. I am 28 years old, married for 3.5 years, no kids (yet!). I am an aquaculture biologist focusing on marine research, however due to recent fundung cutbacks I am presently unemployed.

I have been overweight my entire life. My earliest memory of being weight conscious is from when I was in grade 3 and my doctor had me sign up for weight watchers. Let me tell you, that is a VERY TRAUMATIZING episode for a young child. However, at the time I was 8 years old and over 300lbs!

Over the past few years I have gotten serious about my health and have been working closely with my doctor to get my blood sugars under control and find a weight loss plan that works for me... and I think I found it! I have been on Atkins since September and have lost over 50lbs since then!

The LC WOE has become my friend. I no longer try to fight it or tell myself that I am limiting myself from all the good things in life. I feel so much more awake and alive when I do not subject my body to an excess of carbs.

So, that is a little about myself.

Here's my thoughts on a "team leader"

This is a year long challenge and I think that taking on the role of leader is perhaps a challenge in itsself. I wouldn't mind having a rotating leader. That way everyone gets the experience of it, and no one is "stuck" with the job.

Maybe rotate leaders every month. And if someone truly doesn't want to play the role of leader then just move on to the next person.

What are your thoughts?

Do you want to take first stabs at it? I would offer, but I don't seem to be able to get my head on straight this month...

Sounds good, Katie, though I'm not sure what the team leader does, anyway. Seems like we've done pretty well on the other challenge without a leader.

Deb, I agree with the daily posts. They are a big help to me. I will certainly be posting daily - or multiple times a day! - myself. I'm not sure about getting the stats in a day early. We should maybe check with the powers that be about that since they are asking for the stats as of the 15th and end of the month. But it would make things easier, especially with us spread out so far geographically and time-zonely.

There are a couple of things that I would like to know from everyone. First, what WOE are you each following? The challenge is set up for Atkins, but some of us may be on other programs. Assuming for the moment Atkins, where are you on the program? Induction or OWL? What post-Induction foods are you including in your food plan at the moment? Extra veggies, fruits, dairy, nuts? And how have you adapted the "official" food plan for yourself? Are there things that you are eating that aren't official, or not eating that are? Do you have specific goals in terms of calories, fat, protein, etc.?

The second thing I would like to know will explain why I'm asking all those other questions. What do you want from us with regards to your food and other aspects of your WOE and WOL? Do you want comments/criticisms/etc of what you are eating, or do you prefer a "hands off my food!" approach? Are you just looking for support when things are going bad for you and praise and encouragement when things are going well, or do you want us to kick you (gently of course! No violence here, please! ) when you're getting off track?

No right or wrong answers to any of these questions. We have all (except maybe for you, Chicky?) been at this long enough to know what we need to do with our food and what we are able/willing to accept from others.

I'll answer these questions for myself in a separate post since this one is getting so long.

I think what debbie wrote is a pretty good idea of what I think of a team leader. Compile numbers to make sure we are all accounted for on the 15th & end of month stats. And also try to keep us all in check.

For me - I like the other challenge we are in, but it's more of a social thing for me cause I haven't been "challenged" with certain goals to meet - I guess I'm just not very good at self imposed goals unless I have soemthing at stake (I know, my improved health should be enough, but it's not) and here, if I don't achieve the goals, I (and we, as a team) get less points and I really want to see us doing well, whether we "win" or not, we will all WIN.

Answering my own questions here...

I'm doing Atkins and have been for a little over 21 months. My 2 year Atkinsversary is March 26 (the day before my birthday in case anyone is interested! ) I have never cheated, though I have eaten way too much of "legal" foods. No breads, cookies, etc., though. I am pretty much doing Induction, though I allow myself up to 4 cups of veggies a day. That means between 3 and 4 cups, since I do stick with the 3 cup minimum. And I almost always have 2 cups from the "salad" list, though I include broccoli as a "salad" vegie. Occasionally I have some fruit or nuts, but very rarely. I set my carb limit for 30 just to be on the safe side. I don't make a big deal of carbs, since it's practically impossible to go over 20 carbs a day on Induction unless you have a lot of coffee and non-liquid sweetners. Oh, and I also allow myself up to 1/2 cups of cream/sour cream a day, though I do stick with the 4 oz of cheese.

In addition to sticking with the Induction foods and limits, I aim to keep my calories at about my Basic Metabolic Rate (BMR), which is currently between 1800 and 1850. My goal is to keep my calories between 1700 and 2000, my protein to around 100 - 110 grams per day, and the balance is fat - about 70 - 75%.

What I want from you is to push me back on track if it looks like I'm getting off. I'll let you know if I decide to do something different (add more dairy, or fruits, or nuts or whatever) and ask you to watch with me for a week or so to see if I'm having any problems. If I haven't said I'm making a change, please call me on anything that seems out of line!

So, that's what I'm doing and what I want. How about the rest of you?

I'm going to offer up a suggestion here before I run out to do the laundry (I will answer your post in a bit maw)...

Just for fun I am going to add in a little friendly competition amongst our group alone. I am thinking of going out and purchasing a small prize (small basket of LC goodies or so) for the person who 'ranks' highest on our team points wise at the 6 month and 12 month marks.

I think this will be a great, fun, and friendly little inner competition! What do the rest of you think?

Hey fellow Team 3'ers (we really need a name!)

I don't know any of you folks so I'll introduce myself. My name is Dawn, I'm 47 married for 25 years with 2 kids a son 20 and a daughter 15. I work as a Team Leader in a Call Center of a Bank supervising a team of 15-20 Agents. I have been overweight for about the last 20 years. I piled on the pounds expecting my son and never lost them. Not for lack of trying just about every wacky weight loss system there is out there. I had some success with all of them but never was able to see things thru. Now that I'm older and sooooooooooo much wiser I realize that things like water and exercise are important DUH!!! I'm hoping that this is it for me, I feel enthusiastic and confident that I can succeed.

I'm game for any Team name the group wants, I'm really not computer savy enough to volunteer to be Captain and collect and relay stats. But I can guarantee that I'll have my stats ready to go the 14th and the 29th, I won't let the group down, will stay connected to the group as often as we decide and will give this challenge everything I've got.

talk to you ladies soon

Hey Ladies

I replied to the other post Deb started (despite the fact that I saw her post about the other thread, I didn't get what she meant, thats how feeble I am on a computer) Any way about me, I'm 47 married for 25 years have a son 20 and a daughter 15. I work as a Team Leader in a Call Center at a local Bank and manage a group of 15-20 Agents. I have a great job with a great shift (6:30-2:30 M-F) the hours mean that I get home early enough to go directly to the gym when its quiet and still get home at a reasonable time. I'm one of those people who has had all the tools at their disposal to succeed at weight loss ( gym memberships, the $ to by the food I need or the information I need, support from family and friends) but still I fail repeatedly, I should be embarassed (and am).

I'm really psyched about this challenge, have followed Atkins Induction since 01/01/05. I'm just wiping the slate clean and starting again, drinking my water, eating properly, and getting back to the gym on Monday, I'm forgetting about the past!!!

Are we going to be posting what we've eaten for the day? I'm good with whatever Team name everyone wants, and will take my turn at being Captain. Just give me clear instuctions about how I compile and relay the info. As I said I'm not very computer savy, but maybe after 2005 and losing at least 100 lbs I'll find that the problem was the excessive fat putting pressure on the portion of my brain that allows me to learn this type of thing.

I'll check in later today

Dunno what you folks think we should be posting, so I'll just do whatever I darn well please! (That's pretty much been my motto most of my life. )

So, here's what I ate/will eat today - Sunday
Breakfast - salmon quiche with mayo
Lunch - Dirty Unrice Soup (sausage, broccoli, cream, Cajun seasoning)
Supper - stir fry (chicken, cabbage, onion, mushrooms, red bell pepper, cauliflower "rice", garlic, ginger, soy sauce)
Snacks - 1 ounce cheese with pills at night, decaf and/or herb tea with sf syrup, no cream
No eating after supper except for my cheese and tea!
Lots of water - at least 6 quarts (I'm over that already - will probably be over 8 quarts by the time I'm done)
Exercise - 17 miles/68 minutes on the recumbant bike this morning

Total calories - 1779
Net carbs - 19 grams
Protein - 101 grams
Fat - 73%

So, in terms of the challenge, I'm at the highest levels for both water and exercise, and well under my limit of 30 carbs. Ditto for yesterday, except for exercise - only 37.5 minutes averaged over the two days, but lots of time to make that up.

Hope you all had a great day!

ps - do we have a name yet?

And here's my plan for tomorrow - Monday.

Breakfast - eggs, cream, butter
Lunch - salmon quiche, lettuce, dressing
Supper - Pumpkin, Cabbage and Chicken Soup (pumpkin, onion, garlic, oil, broth, ham hock, chicken, cabbage)
Snacks - 1 ounce cheese with pills at night, probably some decaf and/or herb tea with sf syrup, no cream
No eating after supper except for my cheese and my tea!
Lots of water - at least 6 quarts
Exercise - probably 1 hour on the recumbant bike if available, otherwise on treadmill, or combination of the two

I plan on checking in AM when I get into work and then when I get home at night, maybe mid day to if I can manage it. I've given up eating beef recently so thats one less thing to nosh on I use to cook a roast every Sunday and have it in the fridge I'm gonna have to get more creative and check out some of the low carb sites...............after my 2 weeks Induction. I'd love to join you ladies in the 12 week challenge but I can't find it anywhere. I saw this quote in a magazine recently and just loved it.................................

"When we look back on our lives as a whole, we are most haunted by things left undone - romantic opportunities untried, career changes unexplored, friendships left unatended. So the first suggestion is
