For those with IBS, have you ever been tested for gluten sensitivity?

Just wondering since I read in a health magazine the other day-that sometimes, people who think they have IBS get diagnosed wrong & in reality, they are really allergic to gluten. And once they take gluten out of their diet, the symptoms disappear & they feel better.

My magazines were recently discarded but I want to say it was either in Better Nutrition magazine or Taste for Life magazine. I had both & I got them at my health food store here. They are free magazines. If you have a health food store near you, you might be able to find the magazines.

I was just talking to my SILs sister about this. She told me all her tummy stuff went away once she took out the gluten. I hope she gets enough to eat though....she is so so so so thin right now (and one of the nicest sweetest most beautiful people I have ever met), only 90 lbs at 5'4".

its mostly anything w/ wheat, rye, barley or oats. my own DD7 has upper GI unresolved issues, and was tested for Celiacs....that is how I learned about gluten myself. she does not have celiacs, but it sure educated me on tummy sensitivies.

I just recently found out i cannot have gluten . I had the blood test for celiacs because of family history and bad IBS . I decided not to have the bipsy done because of the family history and the fact i know i feel better when i avoid gluten
The bad thing is you would be surprised in how many thing they put gluten in. I am now trying to figure out how to balance out LC and gluten free. not so much fun

I recently found out I have IBS, I always knew it. I do feel better once I stop eating anything with wheat especially. I get super bloated and my hands break out in these tiny bubbles. It's weird.

I guess maybe I should watch items that are gluten. I bet there is a ton of stuff.

I think low carb is the optimum choice when it comes to those with celiac.

The editor of the magazine that I read took out gluten because she felt better off of gluten & switched over to a South Beach diet lifestyle.

For the most part, a low carb approach is mainly whole foods-you know, meat, veggies, nuts/seeds, oils, fruit & some grains. So to me, it should be easy to do low carb as long as you stay away from the processed foods that contain gluten. And if you add in grains, it should be gluten-free grains. (just recently, I discovered I can't even do those without them setting me off) A low-carb, gluten-free diet is very, very doable.

ABSOFRIKKENLUTELY!!!

My sister suffered for YEARS, and found out if she removed all traces of gluten from her diet she felt great.

It makes it almost impossible for her to eat out... the cross contamination cannot be controlled.

At home she has her own baking pans, butter dispenser, she cannot use the BBQ grill unless it has only been used by her.

She cannot have french fries at a restaurant near her plate (they fry breaded stuff in there too) and she cannot even share drink (or a kiss) with someone who has had so much as a crumb in their mouth recently.

If it is not labelled 'gluten free' she does not trust it... that really is the only way to go, because it really only takes a microscopic amount to make her ill.

Ordering a burger and removing the bun doesn't work either... once that bun has been near her food or on her plate it is game over.

Many spices also contain traces of gluten, so she shops far and wide for 'gluten free' anything she can find.

I feel bad for people who suffer like this, cutting out carbs is one thing, but a french fry touching our food will not make us sick or sabatoge our eating plans..

I also believe in my heart that many people who suffer from fibro can benefit immensely by removing gluten... many of the symptoms are the same.

Dyan,
that is exactly what my doctor said low carb no options . It said it would keep me feeling good and just just avoid the gluten. Plus i need to drop more weight . I may though lean more towards SB diet when i feel ready to. Not for awhile though. I am blissfully enjoying no more mad dashes to the bathroom

it really is momme....

I want to add that the Outback Steakhouse has a gluten free menu! It is one of the few restaurants I found for my sister where we can both eat and enjoy our meal knowing we will still feel good the next day.

She had an AWESOME chocolate cake dessert, unfortunately is was not low carb LOL so I just got to sit and watch.

I was just happy seeing her enjoy dessert for the first time in years

My sister is super thin too!

128lbs at 5'7"

But when she gets an accidental taste of gluten, she can't do up her pants for 2-3 days and her face looks like she gained 25lbs overnight.

We were talking about her 'old life' yesterday (her gluten days LOL) and she remembers ALWAYS having to run to the bathroom everywhere she went, it got so she didn't want to go out in public. And the bloating she always blamed on PMS (every single day of the month?? her poor hubby LOL)

I was lucky to find some low carb / gluten free mixes online somewhere, brownies and muffins and pancakes... if you are interested in the brand names let me know!

My sister really enjoyed the 'oopsie rolls' I brought for our breakfast a few weeks ago, some gluten free / low carb ham sandwiches was a treat for both of us!

I have IBS but no problems with gluten for me its sugar. Also my gastroenterologist told me the gut is controlled by serontonin. So many migraine sufferers also have IBS too and many are put on anti depressants to help with the IBS problems by raising the serontonin levels.

This is a very interesting concept. I have suffered from IBS for years. It is under fairly good control right now. I am on my 2nd week of induction and my gastrointestinal system feels the best it has in years. If I would have only known years ago that grain products were my problem, I would have saved myself a lot of pain. I am nervous to add any grains back into my diet, because my stomach seems to be so calm eating induction level carbs.

Thats how i was the first i did low carb. I never put 2 and 2 together though at the time and figured it was not having grains that made me feel like a million bucks

Diane , you need to look up something called dermatitis herpetiformis . It could be what those bumps on your hands are after you eat wheat . If that is it that is a tell tale sign of celiacs

I have gluten intolerance, originally diagnosed as IBS, the doc kept telling me to eat whole wheat bread, etc...it kept getting worse..that is how I found out.

Actually eating LC is the easiest WOE for me being Gluten free. If you eat all the basic meats and veggies and fruits, add in some rice eventually you are balance in both LC and Gluten free.

The number of undiagnosed Celiacs and gluten intolerants is astounding. I read an article that said some specialists believe there are actually 1 in 3 with gluten sensitivity. and a huge amount of those individuals go undiagnosed their entire lives. Furthermore the average amount of time for an individual who is diagnosed to get that diagnosis in the U.S is 10 years. 10 years of suffering. In italy the average time frame from symptoms to dianosis is something like 8 months. Really makes you think. Another little bit of information that most don't know is that Celiacs doesn't just affect your stomach, it can actually affect almost every system in your body. diabetes, depression, liver problems, etc, etc. The list is forever long, that is why it is very important to get the diagnosis from a doctor, their are a number of tests that need to be run in order to see the full amount of damage it has done to your body.

I buy a tortilla from Jungle Jims, called Women's tortilla, it is Gluten free, and LC only 3 grams per tortilla it is a flax tortilla, takes some getting use to but it isn't full of a bunch of junk, it is actually organic as well.
