Nystatine

I haven't seen this mentionned very much, and I'm taking it so I was curious about others' experiences with it. I have intestinal candida (found out through faeces and blood test independantly) and I was advised to take nystatine to combat it. It was hard to come by though, the first doctor I went to would only prescribe it for a week, the second doctor has given me twice a prescription for three weeks (reluctantly after heavy discussion).

So I've been taking it, mixing 1ml in a glass of water, four times a day (so 4ml per day). I've been a bit neglectant at times, so I have probably taken the dosage for 5 weeks over a 6 week period now. Also I was taking a bunch of other vitamins to boost my intestinal flora, and probiotics, but I'm all out of those now, so just nystatine atm. I have about 2 weeks worth of it left.

Is that enough to kill the candida? I've heard it might take 7-8 weeks. Any experiences about this?

Nystatin?

Effective doses of nystatin for intestinal candida eradication are in the range of 500,000 units per dose 4 times a day for 14-21 days, but longer courses are certainly possible. Strict dosing is important for success.

A 1ml dose of commercially available nystatin suspension of 100,000 units per ml would probably be ineffective. You don't mention your nystatin's concentration. It should be on the bottle. It may be dose is the problem, not length of therapy. Two weeks left of low dose nystatin probably won't be enough for eradication.

Tablets are available at 500,000 units per tablet.

Extra strength probiotics in the range of 20 billion live cells per dose (Florajen) are a good idea, dosed twice daily, coupled with a dietary growth medium, like inulin, polydextrose, or a serving a day of Dreamfields pasta.

There are many natural remedies suggested on this site and others, but you may be past that point, especially if you developed this infection while low carbing. Immune system function via blood tests may be in order.

Yes indeed it says 100,000 IE-UI/ml, so probably not effective, sad to hear . I still have inulin, so I'll start with that and see about the probiotics.

Blood test showed my immune system is severely weakened due to various food intolerances. Since then I've been avoiding the stuff I'm intolerant to though, so hopefully it has improved.

Thanks for the heads-up.

If you have done any reading on this board, you then understand that diet is KEY to eradicating candida. It is crucial to NOT feed the yeast that is bothering you. I know you say that you are avoiding stuff you are intolerant to, but you also have to avoid the sugars, starches, vinegary foods and others that yeast feeds on. If you take medicines, or naturals to get rid of the candida, but then eat so that they multiply, kind of defeats the purpose. Over here, in the states, you will be hard pressed to find any doctor who will prescribe nystatin longterm. Even my OBGYN will only give me 1 Diflucan for the vaginal yeast infections. I have to beg for a second pill! That is why we talk so much about the naturals here.

I have found the best immune boosting thing for me is coconut oil. I have been taking 4 TBL per day for years and it really has helped me. I have avoided a lot of illnesses that my kids bring home from school--I have 4 children that go to elementary, middle and preschool. I have adrenal fatigue that depresses the immune system and my doctor explained that was why I was getting sick so much. I then told her but I don't catch colds or whatever bugs my kids might have. Just this Nov, my daughter was diagnosed with mono--never caught it! So, you might want to research coconut oil---there are tons of threads here at LCFs. I wish you well as I know this is a hard road to follow.

Ok that is indeed new to me. I was told "take nystatine for 7-8 weeks and your candida is gone". The problem with cutting out sugar is that I have tried that a few times in the past month and every time I become increasingly sleepy, weak and confused (like, running a red light and only noticing it after, confused). I'm gonna look into whether or not I am hypoglycemic in the upcoming days, so a sugarfree diet might be in the works anyway.

How about Threelac, has anyone tried that? Seems not too expensive (€64 for 2 months worth of pills), can be bought online and kills candida without any need for a diet.

Concerned

Here is a nice site about Threelac;

Threelac Review, The Yeast Eating Probiotic or Not?

I would avoid it. Instead, I would read every thread on this site concerning candida. For that matter, you should read all about low-carbing in general. As this is a low carb board, I think you will find that a sugarfree diet is understood and implied. For reasons why your sugarfree trials produced the symptoms you describe, search "induction flu."

After reading the candida threads, my impression is that no one solution fits all, but there are a few commonalities. I believe your best weapons are a good doctor and the computer before you.

If you are immuno-compromised, that should be your primary concern, as no treatment, manmade or natural, will be effective if your immune system is not functioning.

Good luck!

I buy my coconut oil by the gallon pail!! And I get 2 at a time! I am not sure how much 56 g are as we don't use those measurements here. I buy the virgin coconut oil--it has the taste and the "essence" of the coconut left in tact. That way all the properties are there. It is anti-fungal, anti-microbial, as well as anti-bacterial and anti-viral!! Great stuff. The recommended dose is 3.5 TBL per day....BUT don't start off with that much!! You need to work up to it. I would start off with 1 or 2 tsp and see how you react. Due to the die off of the candida it could cause tummy upset. Don't take that as a sign you are allergic to it. If you have any reaction to it, with the exception of any anaphylatic type!, then it means that it is working. I take it like a shot---put 1 TBL of the oil in my mouth and chase it with water. The best way to make sure you get the whole TBL in. There are other ways, but that is how I do it. There is a drink that I sometimes take in the morning called Bee's egg drink. Found it on a candida website so it is great for a candida diet as that was it's intent. Here it is if you are game! 3 eggs, 2 cups boiling water, 2 TBL each coconut oil and butter, 1 tsp cinnamon. Blend together and drink. Actually tastes quite good. I hope you enjoy!
