This is a journal to help me learn LC tactics and to record LC success as 2007 draws to an end and 2008 looms large and hopeful ahead of me.

Wish me luck! Luck?

Ah, luck is the residue of design.

Found that in a fortune cookie, ages ago.

Fits into the LC mantra about how failing to plan is planning to fail. So my plans start out each day with a hot slosh of WPP+cocoa+espresso+VCO so that I start off feeling like a LC success. Yay, me!

Oil pulling? Ah, swishing through teeth/gums/tongue!

Posted 01-21-2008 at 10:56 AM by Zer
Found a thread that intrigued and puzzled me, so I had to dive in - finally - to see what in the world this "oil pulling" might be.

See for yourself, at http://www.lowcarbfriends.com/bbs/ma...l-pulling.html what I am just now reading and figuring might be worth trying to whiten my teeth, pink up my gums, freshen my breath by removing particles that defy brushing.

At 64, I've lost enamel and my teeth are dingy and discourage me smiling. For years now I've avoided wearing white near my face, as the contrast with off-white teeth is so bad - and now this 'oil pulling' (swishing oil back and forth in one's mouth to bathe one's gums/teeth in oily foamy richness, also cleans tongue, offers sublingual absorption of good stuff in sesame and sunflower oils - the recommended oils - and is said to be an ayurvedic practice).

Ayurveda? http://skepdic.com/ayurvedic.html
Quote:
Ayurveda is the science of life and it has a very basic, simple kind of approach, which is that we are part of the universe and the universe is intelligent and the human body is part of the cosmic body, and the human mind is part of the cosmic mind, and the atom and the universe are exactly the same thing but with different form, and the more we are in touch with this deeper reality, from where everything comes, the more we will be able to heal ourselves and at the same time heal our planet. ~Deepak Chopra
What next? LC boards are SUCH an education for me! See also http://www.oilpulling.com/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_pulling for more about this curative practice.

Epiphany? I guess it'll do. Happy teeth to me!

Going to try first with a Tbs of coconut oil - handy and tasty - for 20mins of lavage/swishing through my teeth to get that foam going, then spit, then brush. Might try with olive oil, just to see how that goes. Olive oil is a more challenging oil to work with, for me. Urk.

Okay, that's today's LC epiphany! Happy MLK Day, thinking of martyrs to America today! With diligence, I may end up with teeth I can flash in a big bright smile, after oil pulling/swishing!

Hmm... very interesting. I think I might want to try it - however, 20 minutes seems like a long time! Let me know how it works for you.

My teeth feel as good as when I get them polished - and I think they are just a smidgen less dingy than before. Can it be? Probably not. But I feel as if the 20mins might have had some effect and I shall be doing it again. Weird? I'll say! But I'd sure like to have a glistening smile that I can flash as I celebrate living a LC life and slimming down!

Hi,

I tried oil pulling last week for 20 minutes and I thought I was going to die. One tablespoon is too much for me right now and my muscles ... ouch! I started again yesterday with 1 teaspoon and do it for six minutes.

An irritated spot on my gum feels much better and my teeth are a bit brighter. It seems to be doing something with my bronchials. I have been expelling all kinds of junk (clear, but lots of it).

Hi BlackRose, You don't have to start with a full 20 minutes. Start slow and work your way up.

Happy swishing ...

Agreed. I watched the clock like a hawk and was afraid I'd swallow, so kept a jar handy for a fast spit - just in case I could not go the distance on my first "pull". When I spat, it was white with debris. I know coconut oil is clear, and my saliva is clear, so the opacity was clearly (a joke lies somewhere here, I'm sure) something else. Toxins from my tongue? Maybe so. Anyway, I'll do it again. I'd sure like to avoid dentist visits - cost and pain both being something that I can do without!

Found a detailed description of 15-20min process with an explanation of what happens as we swish to mix oil and saliva in our mouth:
Quote:
In the morning before breakfast on an empty stomach you take one tablespoon in the mouth but do not swallow it. Move Oil Slowly in the mouth as rinsing or swishing and Dr Karach puts it as ' sip, suck and pull through the teeth' for fifteen to twenty minutes. This process makes oil thoroughly mixed with saliva. Swishing activates the enzymes and the enzymes draw toxins out of the blood. The oil must not be swallowed, for it has become toxic. As the process continues, the oil gets thinner and white. If the oil is still yellow, it has not been pulled long enough. It is then spit from the mouth, the oral cavity must be thoroughly rinsed and mouth must be washed thoroughly. Just use normal tap water and good old fingers to clean.

Clean the sink properly, you can use some antibacterial soap to clean the sink. Because the spittle contains harmful bacteria and toxic bodily waste. If one were to see one drop of this liquid magnified 600 times under a microscope, one would see microbes in their first stage of development.

It is important to understand that during the oil-pulling/swishing process one's metabolism is intensified. This leads to improved health. One of the most striking results of this process is the fastening of loose teeth, the elimination of bleeding gums and the visible whitening of the teeth.

The oil pulling/swishing is done best before breakfast. To accelerate the healing process, it can be repeated three times a day, but always before meals on an empty stomach.
Ah, clean mouth and sink thoroughly after spitting. I brushed my teeth and gums and tongue, but did not pay special attention to washing out the sink and the spit receptacle except to rinse well. Will do it from now on! Want to be RID of toxins!!!

Found more info at http://www.lowcarbfriends.com/bbs/he...pulling-3.html on why 20mins and on using CLO to swish and spit:
Quote:
Cod Liver Oil and Fish Oil is actually the best oil for pulling. It has anti-viral as well as anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial properties.

The fish oil is thought to have the strongest ability to pull the heavy metal out of your system as well. After that it is sesame and sunflower. Everyone should be supplementing with Cod liver or fish oil for the BEST source of Omega-3's. Nothing compares.

They also say aside from the fish oil (which is perfect) a cheaper alternative to get the most benefits is a mixture of Sunflower and Coconut oil.. Sunflower is anti-bacterial and Coconut oil is anti-viral, and both are much better at drawing out the heavy metals than olive oil. Also a mix of Coconut and Sesame/or sunflower is optimal for softer skin and hair.

... BIG reason you need to swish for at least 10 mins is that the kill time for viral and bacteria doing the "pulling" takes 10-20 minutes. 10 minimum. You *can* reduce the kill time a bit by adding a drop of tea-tree oil (but it can burn a little if too much) or peppermint oil.

If you are just looking to pull heavy metals, 5 mins is OK. 5 minutes is also good enough if you just want the dental benefits and only care about killing the bacteria in your mouth and not the whole body.
So that's what the 20mins is about - killing off resistant toxic lifeforms! That will help me sustain swishing for a full 20mins, the thought of toxins dying off as I swish!

Eeek...more procedural advisories for before and after:
Quote:
The most recent recommendations are that you brush your teeth with just warm water, or add a tiny bit of baking soda before you pull. Brushing before gets rid of residue so the oil/saliva mix can do its job better.

Brush your teeth right after you pull and then drink a full glass of water. This will help you get optimal benefits. You NEED to brush after to get rid of any residual oil because it is toxic and you don't want to re-absorb the toxins. The stuff you spit out is teeming with tons of bacteria not just from your mouth, but from your entire body. They have looked at the pulled oil under microscopes and it ain't pretty.

The dental benefits are only part of mouth cleansing. if you do it right, you will get a lot of benefits. It pulls out all sorts of crap. That is why it is called pulling and not just brushing your teeth with oil.
Whew! Brush before to prepare for effective oil pulling, then brush and rinse after spitting to make sure all toxins are cleared from the mouth. Then scald the sink to make sure said toxins are absolutely finished being health hazards. I anticipate feeling a LOT healthier in days to come. I'm also going to be more scrupulous about sinks that I share with others in my household. Shared sponge toxins are beginning to loom large in my mind. Eeeek!

Hiya! Yep, there's lots of info on pulling out there. I have scoped it out.

Right now I'm using olive oil, because it's what I have. Later I may use a combination of coconut oil and sunflower oil.

In the oil pulling thread there is a recipe for homemade toothpaste that sounds pretty good. I want to get away from the glycerine based toothpastes and try for my teeth remineralizing themselves. We'll see what happens. I might just start doing it with the kids too. I have never liked using flouride.

Here's to pearly whites.

PS
I forgot to say that I am also doing Water Therapy, an East India deal. After I do my pulling, I rinse my mouth and teeth with water and my finger. Then I drink 1.5L (~6 cups) water within 10 to 15 minutes. One hour later I can brush my teeth and take my thyroid supps and wait another hour before eating. Good God, it's good that the pulling and all the water helps to stave off hunger.

Yeah... the thought of toxic lifeforms in my mouth will definitely be a motivation to last the whole 20 minutes! lol

I think I'll start out with sesame or sunflower. The thought of fish oil takes me back to when I was taking the gel caps and would get horrible indigestion and taste fish all day long. Sorry I know that's kinda gross... but true!

Fish oil ... no way. I have some that I take orally and just about die every time and there is no way I could swish that for one minute much less twenty.

Love your ROFL icon above! I know what you mean about holding fish oil for 20mins, swishing it. Urk! I'm also not keen on delaying my morning hot slosh with the 40g of protein that I need to rise and shine. Not sure how I shall manage that. It's working for me. Little by little, I think my legs are almost stronger. Sort of.

I've been delaying purchase of CLO myself, as I finish up my fish oil and contemplate a drawer full of krill oil caps that I ought to be ingesting as anti-inflammatory.

I'm working up courage to get some CLO with my next order from Netrition. Meanwhile, VCO will do for swish. I've got some flavored fish oil in the fridge, but I cannot - dare not - try a 20min swish (much less a spit) in a room with folks wandering in and out and socializing. Bad form.

About teeth whitening, I shall have evidence soon, as I have porcelain cap and filling visible in front. As teeth whiten, those will probably NOT change color. Proof of whitening will be evident soon, if I am faithful and if it is one of the payoffs for swishing oil and pulling toxins out.

Kind of exciting, all this stuff we are learning here!!!

Oh, want to pull this info out, so I remember WHY this is a wonderful thing, as I am swishing CLO and clockwatching:

As bad as the idea of a mouthful of CLO is, it's not as nasty as the cilantro that I've been taking to pull heavy metal out of my cells. For me, cilantro is bleagh!
