Life Insurance

This is going to be more of a life lessons post than a weight loss post.
Recently, my SIL's husband passed away. He was a trucker and was returning from a run late at night and ran off the road. We don't know if he fell asleep and had a heart attack, or had a heart attack first then ran off the road or what. he was not in good health anyway, very overweight, only 55 yrs old.
Point is, he is gone. He didn't have any life insurance. He was in the military at one point in his life for 6(?) years, but that doesn't get you a funeral.
My SIL and her family live in a very rural area in Georgia. They were dirt poor anyway and needed his income just to make ends meet. Now he's gone and none of us have any freakin clue what they're going to do. But it's made worse by the fact they didn't even have insurance.
We don't know for sure whether his trucking company has an accident policy or not. We're all of the mind that he was being paid under the table anyway, and prolly didn't have any benefits. We don't know for sure, but that's the way these folks operate. Real good ol boy stuff going on.
So of course my wife has been like "well what would happen if you died?". I didn't even know. Luckily I work at a company with great benefits and I get company paid life insurance and ADD, plus I pay for extra. I also get STD and LTD, and insurance on my wife and kids. So if I go, my wife will be taken care of. It's not like she's never going to have to work again, but she'll be ok for a while and be able to get her feet under her.
It just rubs us all the wrong way with my SIL's husband. They go to this back woods church, with a lot of things totally opposite from mainstream christianity. Not even going to get into it. But at the funeral they kept going on and on about what a great guy he was and a father and a husband etc etc....
And he was a very likeable friendly guy, but...
...Now granted, my mind has been poisoned by years of my wife's and FIL's grumblings, but the fact is this has guy never provided for his family to a level that is acceptable according to "normal" standards. They've always had to borrow money and cars and live in shacks and whatnot. It's just a very different culture. Now he's gone and they've got no money to pay for his funeral, no money for their bills, horrible credit, etc...bumper stickers with "don't let the car fool you, my treasure's in heaven". BS. Bible says "blessed are the poor in spirit", not "blessed are the poor". Go get an education and better yourself for godsakes.
So, folks, make sure you're insured so that your loved ones left behind will be taken care of when you're gone, or make sure you'll be taken care of if you lose your significant other.
